Eight years celebrating ‘El Awards’
The challenges for young Latino men have always been daunting. In the current economy, they are confronted with even deeper obstacles.
Many of our youths are out of school. Some are unemployed or under-employed. Among those who are college educated, there is the sentiment that a degree will not take them as far as they expected.
This uncertainty is all the more reason to step up for our young men. A good friend once told me “when those around are standing still, it’s our opportunity as Hispanics to make great strides. It’s the only way we will ever gain ground.” I couldn’t agree more.
I would also take that one step further.
Latino young men look to other Hispanic males for how to survive and succeed. So connecting and supporting them is more than an opportunity-it’s our responsibility as a community bent on progressing.
This is why we find ourselves celebrating our 8th Annual “El Awards.” Whether it’s at home or in public, young Latinos need to see positive examples of men who have carved their own future. When the economy or family are unstable, they should know that they can turn to mentors who speak the same language or eat the same foods as them. This is the message we should deliver today and beyond.
The El Awards would not be possible without our partners in this endeavor. We are fortunate enough to have the support of highly esteemed sponsors, such as: Staples, Hennessy, Ford, ESPN Deportes, the New York Jets and the New York Yankees. They have helped provide scholarships for our Latino youth and that is a clear demonstration of their commitment to our community’s future.
