Children and Holiday Gatherings
A party at home is much more than just a gathering, it's a teachable moment for kids.
In my home, social gatherings are part of our daily life. My husband and I always find an excuse to get together with friends and enjoy a tasty meal and good wine. Now that we’re about to celebrate the holidays, it’s a good time to organize a party and invite friends and family over. After all, the house is going to be decorated and, even though planning things is more complicated when children are around, why not get in the holiday spirit with a small get-together?
The important thing is to forget about perfection and let everyone participate, including the kids. Identify chores they can be in charge of and help them feel responsible for the party’s success. When we have a party in our home, my kids are usually pretty cooperative and willing to help.
At a recent party in the home of our friends Magali and Jorge, we were told about all the help they got from their girls while getting everything ready. “Gaby helped me make fresh pasta and learned how to stuff it,” Jorge said proudly.
The truth is that any party – no matter how small – is healthy for every member of the family. Experts believe that when parents organize a party at home, children learn that their parents have other personal interests, in addition to them. When children see their parents interact with other adults, they have the opportunity to learn about the importance of developing social skills, having conversations involving more than one person and treating others with respect and kindness.
We must keep in mind that the holidays are the time of year to show love, gratitude and generosity. Why not begin at home with your kids? Include them in your plans and show patience, understanding and enthusiasm for their efforts.
In Latin families, getting together with family and friends is very common this time of year. So we shouldn’t forget that the kids can help.
And remember that, although your kids won’t make decisions relating to food or guests, they can help you choose the flowers or wash the vegetables and fruits you’re going to be serving. Children of all ages can pick up their toys and help keep the house clean for the party. They can greet guests when they arrive, and pass appetizers around. You can also enlist your oldest child to take photos for the family album!
This holiday season, make plans and organize get-togethers, but enjoy it. And let your kids be part of your gathering. Remember: what’s important is to make the time for your friends and family.
Happy Holidays!
