Pulperia on Essex is like a bodeguita straight out of Latin America – hence the name “Pulperia.” Its delicious Spanish tapas menu includes chorizo and croquetas de queso, complemented with wines from Spain and South America.

But Pulperia is more than a cozy bar and restaurant. It also offers an in-house market of original recipes and ingredients so that you can transfer the dining experience to your home. I visited this Lower East Side spot for its “Spanish Wine Tour”, which is every other Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. I’m a wine lover at heart, but I am not an expert on how wine is made or the kind of wine that best fits certain cuisines. My class was led by viticulturist Emmanuel Peña. He served three types of wine with delightful picadera like fresh cheese, bread and ham. During the class, Peña discussed the origins of each wine, what to look for when buying a bottle, pairings and more. At the end of the class, you even receive a certificate for completing the course, making you a pulpero.

The next class on February 11 is on wines from Chile and Argentina. Each class is $50.

Pulperia on Essex is at 131 Essex Street, New York, NY 10002; 212.300.4722
