For the first time in the history of the Spanish Monarchy, the new Queen of Spain Letizia will be someone from a modest middle class family.

Just a few weeks ago, Letizia and Felipe, Prince of Asturias, celebrated ten years of marriage on May 23. In a matter of weeks, the couple will inherit the throne of Spain, after the abdication of the King Juan Carlos.

These are the ten more important moments of the new Queen of Spain during the ten years of marriage:

1. The engagement ceremony

Letizia showed her spunk the day the couple announced their engagement to the media. While answering a question, Letizia interrupted Felipe, insisting he “let her finish” speaking, in front of all the cameras. It was a bold and spontaneous gesture from a woman nervous in her brand new role as a princess. Her bold interjection may not have bothered her soon-to-be hubby, but the most rancid monarchists began giving her the cold shoulder.

2. Woman in red

Princess Letizia’s debut in front of her new fellow royals took place in Denmark at the wedding of Frederik and Mary in 2004, just one week before she married Felipe. Holding the arm of her fiancé and wearing a spectacular red number by Spanish dressmaker Lorenzo Caprile, Letizia walked the red carpet as splendid as a Hollywood star.

3. Her sister’s suicide

Erika Ortiz, one of Letizia’s two sisters, was found dead from a barbiturates overdose in her home on February 7, 2007. She left a daughter and a farewell letter. Letizia, who was pregnant with her second daughter at the time, appeared distraught at the funeral It was a tragic moment that humanized the grieving princess.

4. Ever-changing image

Letizia went from a fresh and natural beauty to a clone of Queen Rania of Jordan. Some say makeovers, beauty treatments and surgeries have turned her into an expressionless doll. Letizia has also been plagued by rumors of anorexia, although she and her sisters are naturally thin.

5. “Goodbye Princess”

David Rocasolano, a cousin, former lawyer and ex-confidant of Princess Letizia, published a scandalous book, Goodbye Princess, that allegedly revealed all the princess’s miseries. He accused her of having an abortion before meeting Felipe, and described her as so controlling and tyrannical that she destroyed her relatives’ lives. Although the Royal Family tried to stop the publication of the book, Rocasolano’s salacious accusations became hot topics on internet blog sites. Since then, Rocasolano has also announced that he is writing a second book.

6. She dislikes Mallorca

Thinking her comments would be off the record, Letizia told reporters she didn’t like Palma de Mallorca, traditional holiday destination of the Royal Family. Last summer, she only showed up for a few days, and left her husband and children behind on the island as she headed off to an unknown destination.

7. Princess of people?

Letizia enjoys nights out with her girlfriends. The Princess particularly loves going to indie music festivals, she has even been photographed eating sunflower seeds in old Madrid while chatting with her bodyguards. These activities have caused some dismay amongst old-fashioned monarchists.

8. Distant and controlling

The Princess is obsessed with protecting her privacy. She has been known to take paparazzi cameras, refuse to allow her daughters to be photographed at school festivals and make people delete pictures of her family from their cell phones. In her only official family photo shoot, on the occasion of her 40th birthday, she appeared cold and tense.

9. A strong character

Princess Letizia does not give interviews, but she certainly doesn’t hesitate to share her thoughts in public. In the presence of journalists, she has repeatedly and adamantly defended her and her daughters’ right to privacy. She has also been seen publicly scolding Prince Felipe During an official outing she reportedly reproached him, saying, “If you stop to speak to everyone, we will never finish!”

10. Weary of Iñaki Urdangarin

It was rumored Letizia did not get along with her sisters-in-law, Princesses Cristina and Elena. Years later, the real reason came to light. Letizia knew all about the shady business of Inaki Urdangarin, husband of Cristina, and did everything she could to distance herself from the couple. She didn’t want any suspicious activity to harm her and her husband’s reputation.
