Today is Angelina Jolie’s birthday, and the star turns a beautiful age 39. But how does she stay looking so youthful?

According to Angelina and her personal trainer, Gunnar Peterson, it’s all about circuit training and a little yoga on the side.

“Like every mother, my wish every birthday is for my children to stay healthy, for my family to remain healthy, so I will continue that,” she told E! Online. And Angelina does just that.

According to reports, the A-list actress not only focuses on eating a high-protein, low-carb diet to help her stay in shape, she also makes sure to focus on circuit training combine with a 5-10 pound dumbbell. Movie time also kicks it up a step for Angelina; when she was preparing for her role in “Sleeping Beauty,” Jolie was put through tough yoga training sessions to build up her core strength.

Not only was the star expected to be able to perform in the air while hoisted by a harness, she needed to be able to do so with a pair of giant, heavy wings attached.

“She made me do yoga, and I have no patience for yoga,” Jolie recently told USA Today. “It’s not something I do easily because I’m not a still person. But I was forced to do yoga because (to fly) you have to have your core strength to be able to hold yourself.”

Yoga and meditation helps toning the body

Yoga, despite it’s gentle nature, has been recognized as one of the most beneficial of exercise routines when it comes to strength training and toning the body.

While it requires balance and muscle strength to perform many of the moves, it does so in a way that focuses the brain through meditation. Yoga has also been shown to help people with irregular heartbeats, reduce stress and help improve flexibility and mobility in general.

But fitness is more than just about staying in shape; for Angelina, fitness is about being proud to be who you are and not focus on the small things that drive women crazy.

“I’ve realized that being happy is a choice, she said to Pop Workouts. “You never want to rub anybody the wrong way or not be fun to be around, but you have to be happy. When I get logical and I don’t trust my instincts — that’s when I get in trouble. The truth is I love being alive. And I love feeling free. I never feel settled or calm.

You can’t really commit to life when you feel that. I think all women go through periods where we hate this about ourselves, we don’t like that. It’s great to get to a place where you dismiss anything you’re worried about. I find flaws attractive. I find scars attractive. I don’t see myself as beautiful, because I can see a lot of flaws. People have really odd opinions. They tell me I’m skinny, as if that’s supposed to make me happy.”
