Summer vacation and the media truce for the Spanish royal family are over. Traditional summer photos of the Spanish monarchs King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia together in Mallorca, Spain have not appeared in the tabloids this summer because, among other things, the royal couple have vacationed separately.

Since the abdication of King Juan Carlos, announced on June 2, rumors of an impending separation from Queen Sofia have swirling. The distance between Juan Carlos and Sofia was palpable, but no one thought they would get a divorce. The King and Queen have led separate lives for several years and only appeared together at official events. The last time we would see them together was at the official coronation of his son as King of Spain.
Juan Carlos’s abdication and the proclamation of his son Philip VI as the new King of Spain has opened the door to the possibility that Juan Carlos and Sofia will put in writing what was already in place: a physical separation that has been more than evident.
Tuesday, Italian daily “La Repubblica” published in its printed edition-just a few paragraphs in an interior page that an official statement from the Royal Household Press Office announcing the “effective divorce” of the Spanish monarchs s is inmminent.
