Forty-five-year-old Jennifer Lopez can turn heads just as well?if not better?than younger actresses, and it’s all thanks to blessed genetics and help from the best trainers in the business.

When it comes to taking care of a maturing body, working out like you did when you were 20 might not be in your best interest. According to Tracy Anderson, who has helped Jennifer Lopez and other celebrities stay in the best shape of their lives, older women often think that running and similar cardio workouts are what it takes to lose weight, when in reality, what they need to focus on is lifting light weights at high repetitions.

This is the ideal way to build the long, lean muscles that look the best on an older woman.

“While running and cycling may burn calories, they do not design feminine muscles or get rid of an imbalance that may masquerade as a ‘problem area’ — even on women who are genetically thin,” writes Anderson in her blog. “Running a marathon is a real and measurable accomplishment, but if you’re looking to lean out and lose weight, training to complete 26.2 miles isn’t going to give you the physical results you crave.”

Anderson adds that, in her opinion, many experts have it wrong when they recommend women weight lift and be unconcerned because they won’t put on massive muscle weight anyhow.

While a woman naturally won’t bulk out like a man, women who lift heavy weights will build more muscles compared to women who lift lighter weights but do more repetitions.

And “heavy weights” apply to kettle bells as well as to traditional weights.

“I have occasionally designed programs for men that incorporate kettle bells, but I would never recommend them to women, even for women who are fans of bulkier muscle lines,” said Anderson, reported by the Examiner. “Kettle balls are also unnecessary, since you can easily get the benefits of incorporating weight and motion in a way that doesn’t add bulk or put your body at risk of injury ? The sooner you build a long, lean, and feminine arm, the more sustainable the results will be — and with no sacrifice in strength.”

Though Anderson’s low-weight-high-rep recommendations contradict those of other fitness experts, if Jennifer Lopez believes in Anderson’s philosophy at age 45, maybe there is something to it after all.
