Voters will head to the polls again next week, and being New York a liberal, diverse state where Latinos make up 18% of the population, we need to make sure the Albany Legislature is led by progressive Democrats who have the interests of our community at heart.

For this reason, El Diario is endorsing the following candidates.

Governor: Although during his first term Governor Andrew Cuomo left us with some doubts about his real commitment to the Hispanic community, we want to give him a second chance to deliver on his promises on such urgent issues as the DREAM Act, which would make college education possible for thousands of undocumented youths.

We also hope that a more effective Albany leadership will increase wages and control rent hikes.

Attorney General: During his tenure as Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman has recovered millions in lost wages for Latinos victims of labor abuse by unscrupulous employers.

He has also stood out for fighting immigration fraud. He established a 2 million dollar fund for thousands of victims who were deceived by two organizations that took advantage of our people’s dreams.

He also came to the rescue of the traditional Puerto Rican parade, by dismantling its board after finding financial mismanagement.

Schneiderman has also stood strong in chasing the banks to ease the pain of many families who lost their homes during the mortgage crisis. We know that the housing bubble hit minorities the hardest.

For all those reasons we believe A.G. Schneiderman should be reelected next Tuesday.

State Comptroller: As New York State Comptroller, Thomas DiNapoli has weathered the market storms to ensure a healthy pension system.

Thanks to his vision, public service workers can have the prospect of a balanced retirement.

The Comptroller has also expressed support for the DREAM Act.

From his office, he championed a report showing that the DREAMers won’t be a burden on the state coffers. DiNapoli’s reelection is the best option
