Cannibalism involved Mexican drug cartel’s initiation rites

Endless reports of cartel violence rule news reports from across Mexico, but this month new reports reveal cannibalism in Mexican drug cartel initiation rituals. A brutal Mexican drug gang forced its novice members to consume the human hearts of their murder victims, according to a report published by Reuters. Michoacan, an agricultural state in western Mexico, is home to several vicious drug gangs, and violence between rival gangs has recently soared. In December, two rival gangs engaged in a shootout that resulted in 11 deaths. This surge in violence occurred in the wake of the massacre of 43 teaching students in the neighboring state of Guerrero. The Guerrero incident sparked fear and protests throughout the country, as Mexico’s citizens worry that the government is not doing enough to defeat the country’s problem of chronic violence. Since 2007, over 100,000 people in Mexico have been killed in gang-related incidents. To make matters worse, police departments, and often times politicians are involved with the cartels–making justice elusive for many of the victims. Alfredo Castillo, Michoacan’s federal security commissioner, has claimed that cannibalism is not a widespread practice for initiation amongst the drug cartels in the region. Not all Mexican drug cartels are alike However, Castillo did say that heart-eating was an initiation rite used by  a notorious cartel leader, to root out moles. Moreno, founder of both La Familia Michoacana and The Knights Templar cartel, is known as “The Craziest One”. Moreno was killed in March 2014, and he will forever be remembered for his merciless practices. “The ritual ranged from dismembering people they intended to kill to sometimes serving up the heart,” said Castillo.
