Remember when Renee Zellweger made a public appearance in 2014 looking like a completely different person? Now she’s not alone. Actress Uma Thurman, known for her action roles in films like “Kill Bill,” attended the premier of new TV miniseries “The Slap” looking almost unrecognizable.

Though no reports of cosmetic procedures have been verified, critics are saying something just as subtle as an eyelid lift could be responsible. Thurman’s spokespeople have remained silent, and there are some Uma supporters stating the actress simply isn’t wearing any heavy eye makeup.

Media outlets, however, point out there are too many noticeable changes–like new smooth areas of the face–for Thurman’s transformation to be completely the result of no beauty products.

Can eyelid surgery change the face that much?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure typically used to improve the appearance of the eyelids. While some individuals have medical conditions that require blepharoplasty to ensure healthy vision, many people opt for the procedure as a way to gain a more youthful appearance.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, eyelid surgery cosmetically can improve:

  • Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision.
  • Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids.
  • Bags under the eyes.
  • Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris.
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid.

Though a minor surgery and seemingly insignificant change to a person’s face, experts say eyelid surgery can drastically change how someone looks, even though the rest of their features have remained the same. Dr. William Portuese, MD, of Seattle Blepharoplasty & Eyelid Center explained on RealSelf, that blepharoplasty results can all depend on the patient.

“In some cases upper and lower eyelid surgery can drastically change a look, and another instances it just freshens up the overall eyelids,” he explained. “The results are very subjective, so it is best to see what can be accomplished with the procedure by looking at many different before and after results.”

Other experts agree, and indicate eyelid surgery should be done conservatively to ensure the shape and appearance of the eyes aren’t changed. The goal is the provide a more youthful appearance, not a new face.

Despite the potential for a drastic change in physical appearance, eyelid surgery isn’t likely to go out of style any time soon. A study from the University of Maryland recently put “eyes” and “eye clarity” on the list of things people find most attractive in a potential mate.

“Standards of beauty vary across cultures, however, youth and healthiness are always in fashion because they are associated with reproductive fitness,” said lead author Dr. Robert R. Provine. “Traits such as long, lustrous hair and smooth or scar-free skin are cues of youth and offer the beholder a partial record of health. Now clear eye whites join these traits as a universal standard for the perception of beauty and a cue of health and reproductive fitness.”

Eyelid surgery is, of course, just speculation in the case of Uma Thurman. If the celebrity leading lady did have any cosmetic procedures done, as long as she is happy with the results that’s all that matters.
