Sean Penn has been called a pendejo (Spanish for a**hole) after he announced the award for Best Motion Picture to Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu at the 87th Annual Academy Awards Sunday night.

“Who gave this son of a b**ch his green card?” an insensitive and inappropriate Penn asked as he called the Mexican actor on stage to receive the honor for his film “Birdman.”

Was it friendly banter between two greats with respect for each other in the film business or a downright racist introduction?

Iñarritu who laughed at Penn’s “green card” joke prior to getting his golden statue, later expressed that he didn’t find the comment offensive and said, “it was hilarous,” reports Variety. As it turns out, both Penn and the Latino film director have been friends since they worked together on Iñarritu’s 2003 film “21 Grams.”

Though it’s all fun and games between Hollywood colleagues Penn and Iñarritu, the Internet was not laughing, stating that Penn’s comment was racist.

Mexican and Latinos, especially, have a lot to say on the matter and are voicing their thoughts with the trending hashtag #Penndejo.

The problem w Sean Penn’s statement is that it limits what #Latinos are entitled to–certainly nothing which belongs to whites #Penndejo
