Food impacts every part of the human body, so it should come as no surprise that what we eat has a direct effect on our level of sexual desire. Some foods, like oysters, chocolate and figs, are known for the aphrodisiac properties, but research says there may be one more to add to the list–at least for women.

According to a new study published in The Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics, eating apples may be the key to increasing sexual pleasure for women.
Scientists discovered a regular daily apple intake can boost sexual pleasure in healthy women. (Shutterstock)
More than 700 healthy, Italian women were involved in the research. They were separated into two groups; one group that ate no apples and one group that ate 1-2 apples per day. The participants were then asked 19 questions as a part of the standard Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), pertaining to sexual function, sexual frequency, orgasm, lubrication and overall sexual satisfaction.
The end result, according to the study was “daily apple use is associated with higher FSFI scores in sexually active female patients, thus increasing their lubrication and overall sexual function.”
When the results were examined further, experts indicated it isn’t surprising that apples fall into the same categories as wine and chocolate when it comes to increasing sexual pleasure. Just like other food aphrodisiacs, apples contain polyphenols and antioxidants that can stimulate blood flow to the genitalia and vagina to help increase arousal.
But there is something unique about apples that other foods might not be able to compare to. Apples also contain phloridzin, a common phytoestrogen that is structurally similar to the female sex hormone estradiol. Estradiol is commonly prescribed for women who are going through menopause and helps improve vaginal lubrication as well as relieve the side effects such as hot flashes and bone loss.
So should you count apples among the best food aphrodisiacs?
It may be a little premature to say that apples are one of the go-to foods if you want to increase sexual pleasure. Study authors caution that the pool of participants was relatively small to draw large-scale conclusions, but the results were definitely promising.

If you’re looking to try more well-known foods for increasing sexual pleasure, the most common ones are:
- oysters and other seafood
- asparagus
- almonds
- avocado
- chocolate
- figs
- bananas
- spicy food
It should be noted, however, that studies into the use of food for this purpose are limited, and there are currently no large-scale studies that prove or disprove claims that foods can significantly alter sexual pleasure. Some experts feel any results seen by an individual are more likely due to a placebo effect. Or, in other words, the desire to have more desire is all it takes to enhance pleasure.
