APR 14: X-STEM—a “TED-Style” Symposium with Science Visionaries for Kids—Kicks-Off the USA Science & Engineering Festival at the D.C. Convention Center

Extreme STEM Symposium

Science & Engineering Festival Expo

. Being held on April 14th at the Walter E.
Washington Convention Center in D.C., X-STEM is a “TED-style” event for
kids featuring talks by 40 of the nation’s most noted science,
technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) professionals
representing top universities, corporations, non-profits, and
governmental agencies.

“X-STEM connects science superstars with kids using engaging format and
topics. It’s the perfect kick-off to the festival as we work to ignite
teens’ interest in STEM careers. Building our nation’s science
capabilities is critical to helping our nation compete in the global
marketplace,” explained Larry Bock, Festival co-founder.

Geared towards middle and high-school students, X-STEM features
interactive presentations and workshops by an exclusive
group of visionaries
 who aim to empower and inspire kids about STEM
careers. Throughout the day, top STEM role models and industry leaders
will ignite students’ curiosity through storytelling and live
demonstrations. Sessions will cover a wide array of subject areas
including space exploration, The Maker Movement, cancer research,
oceanography, flying robots, movie science, and more.

Here is a sampling of scheduled X-STEM speakers:

  • Dr. Carol Greider – a Nobel Prize winning pioneer researcher in
    molecular biology from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine
  • Maj. Gen. Jacqueline D. Van Ovost – U.S. Air Force test pilot,
    and vice director, Joint Staff at the Pentagon
  • Dr. David Berman – Noted physician-scientist and senior vice
    president and head of MedImmune’s Oncology Innovative Medicines Unit
  • Dr. Christopher Emdin – Education pioneer at Columbia
    University known for non-traditional approach to making STEM come
    alive for students in urban areas, including hip hop
  • Dr. Geoffrey Ling – Former DARPA physician and scientist making
    groundbreaking contributions to neuroscience and battlefield medicine,
    including developing revolutionary prostheses
  • Dr. Nizar Ibrahim – National Geographic paleontologist and
    explorer who scours the deserts of North Africa for clues to life in
    the Cretaceous period
  • Helen Greiner – Founder and CEO of CyPhy Works, a leading
    robotics company developing amazing, futuristic flying robots
  • Sara Volz – 19-year old biofuel researcher and MIT student who
    won the 2013 Intel Science Talent Search for her work to make algae a
    more feasible option in replacing fossil fuels
  • Chris Fischer – OCEARCH founding chairman, who has led 23
    global expeditions researching great white sharks, tiger sharks and
    other apex predators
  • Spiros Michalakis – Caltech quantum physicist who served as the
    Hollywood science consultant to the movie Ant-Man explains how to
    break the laws of physics

“The X-STEM symposium showcases the creativity and innovation that is
shaping science today while providing a dynamic learning opportunity for
students,” stated Dr. David Berman, senior vice president and head of
MedImmune’s Oncology Innovative Medicines Unit and 2016 X-STEM speaker.

young people to pursue careers in STEM.”

X-STEM runs from 9am-3pm and costs $20 per person. Space is limited to
