Attorneys John Sloan and Justin A. Smith of Texas-Based Sloan, Bagley, Hatcher & Perry Law Firm Available for Comment on Sexual Assault Awareness and Impact on Victims

LONGVIEW & HOUSTON, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–John
Sloan
and Justin
A. Smith
, partners with Sloan,
Bagley, Hatcher & Perry Law Firm
(The Sloan Firm), are expert
sources available to media seeking commentary and background information
related to sexual assault and sexual abuse news and feature stories in
connection with Sexual
Assault Awareness Month
this April. Sloan and Smith recently won a
$21 million verdict in a Texas court for a sexual abuse case on behalf
of two young children.

A nationally recognized law firm with offices in Longview and Houston,
The Sloan Firm represents victims through its Personal Injury Practice
Area. In the state of Texas, The Sloan Firm’s lawyers are
board-certified in Personal Injury Law by the Board of Legal
Specialization. The firm’s attorneys are also licensed to practice in
Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.

First recognized in April 2001, Sexual Assault Awareness Month raises
awareness about sexual violence that occurs across all age groups and
demographic populations. Although it may appear that sexual abuse and
violence trends toward children and teenagers, college campuses, or
allegations within the Catholic Church, sexual abuse goes hand-in-hand
with the social dynamic that sexual predators exploit.

“Sexual abuse is more common than most people realize, and victims are
subjected to strong emotional and psychological manipulation to withhold
reporting the incident,” said John Sloan, founding partner of Sloan,
Bagley, Hatcher & Perry Law Firm. “The harm caused by the sexual abuse,
the treatment to manage it, and the impact the abuse has on the victim’s
emotional and psychological wellbeing is permanent. The abuse doesn’t
affect just the victim. It affects everyone around the victim.”

John Sloan has tried several cases for victims of sexual violence and
speaks frequently on awareness of this major public health, human rights
and social justice issue. “Our clients come to us at a very difficult
time in their lives. The pain and suffering they have experienced is
immense, so we recognize the need to care for our clients
comprehensively and go beyond being a lawyer. We act as a legal
advocate, a counselor and a friend,” Sloan explains.

Sloan added that sexual abuse is often perpetrated by someone in a
position of trust and power. That could be a family member, a close
family friend, an educator, or someone in the church. There is often a
fear that, because the perpetrator is respected in the family or
community, the report of sexual abuse will not be believed or, even if
believed, ignored.

“Even if there is no physical evidence, it’s important to the victim
that the law enforcement community and those in the legal system
understand that the abuse still occurred. It is our job to seek justice
for the victim,” commented Smith. “From the time the abuse occurs until
the time when the victim dies, he or she will always suffer from the
psychological effects and will carry the emotional scars of being
abused. It is something that gets down into their soul, becomes a part
of who they are, and ultimately changes them.”
