Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Receives $308,260 Donation from Kohl’s to Support Safety and Injury Prevention Programs for Kids

Kohl’s Cares® collaborates with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to
host 13
th annual safety and
prevention education fair

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) safety and injury prevention
programs received a donation when Kohl’s announced they had bestowed
$308,260 to the hospital’s nationally recognized safety and injury
prevention programs for kids. Officials from Kohl’s announced the
donation at the annual safety and injury prevention fair put on by the
hospital and the department store in Westchester, Calif., on Oct. 22.

Kohl’s and CHLA share a common conviction: Prevention education can
break the pattern of unintentional injury. Combining instruction with
raising awareness, Kohl’s and CHLA have collaborated to promote the
importance of utilizing proper safety techniques indoors and outdoors to
save the lives of children and reduce unintentional injuries.

“I’m very proud of the longtime commitment Kohl’s has made to CHLA’s
injury prevention program,” says Jeffrey Upperman, MD, CHLA’s Trauma
Program director. “This donation is very much appreciated because it
allows CHLA to continue to provide ongoing educational services to our
patient families and members of our community to reduce preventable
injuries and death to children.”

Since 2004, Kohl’s has donated more than $4.3 million to CHLA and its
initiatives.

Kohl’s commitment to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is made possible
through the Kohl’s Cares cause merchandise program. Through
this initiative, Kohl’s sells $5 books and plush toys where 100 percent
of net profit benefits children’s health initiatives nationwide,
including hospital partnerships like this one.

The annual educational fair that was held at Kohl’s storefront in
Northridge taught children and families a variety of safety tips to
protect families during sports activities, in cars, as pedestrians and
in the home. At the event, Kohl’s offered families inspections of their
car seats by certified car seat technicians and some even received a
free replacement car seat. Participants were reminded that on January 1,
2017, a new state law goes into effect stating that children under two
years old must be in a rear-facing car seat unless they weigh 40 pounds
or more, or are at least 40 inches tall.

“Car seat safety is an ongoing area of concern and we at CHLA are
committed to showing families that a few minutes of their time learning
how to properly install a child’s car seat can mean the difference
between life and death for their child in the event of a collision,”
says Helen Arbogast, MPH, CHES, CPSTI, manager of CHLA’s Injury
Prevention and Trauma Program.
