Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Receives Prestigious Clinical Excellence Recognition for Patient Outcomes in Asthma Care

Top Accreditor Recognizes CHLA for Success in Providing Home
Management Plans of Care Given to Asthma Patients

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) announced today that it has been
recognized as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® for 2015
(based on 2014 data) for its childhood asthma care by the Joint
Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in the
United States. CHLA is one of only 1,043 hospitals out of more than
3,300 eligible hospitals in the United States to achieve the Top
Performer distinction.

This distinction was part of The Joint Commission’s 2015 annual report “America’s
Hospitals: Improving Quality and Safety,” for attaining and
sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance for children
treated for asthma. The Joint Commission’s review of pediatric medical
facilities focuses on success in providing families with at-home care
management plans for childhood asthma while review of adult hospitals
includes broader treatment categories such as heart failure, heart
attack, surgical care and pneumonia, among others.

Asthma care is delivered through the multidisciplinary efforts of CHLA’s
divisions of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, led by Joseph Church, MD,
Hospital Medicine, led by Michael Bryant, MD, and Pediatric Pulmonology,
led by Sally Ward, MD. Collectively, the divisions combine innovative,
treatment, research, education and outreach in the care of children with
severe asthma. CHLA physicians work closely with each child’s family to
ensure that asthma home care is provided as part of the discharge
process.

The Joint Commission created the Top
Performer Program to provide incentives and recognition to
accredited hospitals that demonstrate the ability to achieve and sustain
excellence in accountability measure performance. The Top Performer
Program recognizes hospitals for improving performance on
evidence-based interventions that increase the chances of healthy
outcomes for patients with certain conditions. To be named a Top
Performer, CHLA had to meet three performance criteria based on 2014
accountability measure data, including:

• Achieve cumulative performance of 95 percent or above across all
  reported accountability measures;
• Achieve performance of 95 percent or above on each and every reported
  accountability measure with at least 30 denominator cases; and
• Have at least one core measure set that had a composite rate of 95
  percent or above, and within that measure set, achieve a performance
  rate of 95 percent or above on all applicable individual
  accountability measures.
