Colorado Meth Project Participates in Meth Awareness Week

New public awareness campaign aims to combat use of Meth in Colorado

DENVER–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Colorado
Meth Project
kicks off participation in Meth Awareness Week today
through December 4, 2015 with an impactful awareness campaign created to
combat the use of Methamphetamine (Meth). The campaign will be
distributed via Colorado Meth Project’s digital ads and social media
platforms to effectively reach youth and engage them in spreading the
word about the extreme dangers of using Meth.

Coordinated by The
Meth Project
, a large-scale, teen-targeted prevention program of the
Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, National Meth Awareness Week will be
observed November 30 through December 4, 2015.

The Colorado Meth awareness campaign is part of a national campaign
coordinated by The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids and The
Meth Project
, which aims to significantly reduce Meth use through
public service messaging and community outreach. The week will kick off
with a digital media campaign and social content running on all of the
Colorado Meth Project’s social media platforms that ask teens to get
involved and take action individually and with their peers.

This year’s campaign theme, “Raise the Volume”, is carried forward in
the campaign ads that were directed by Oscar-winning cinematographer
Wally Pfister, as well as in the social media content that will be
reaching youth and encouraging participants to get involved within their
communities to help amplify the message of choosing life over Meth.

Colorado Meth-related facts:

  • Meth continues to be readily available in Colorado; in 2014 more
    Coloradans sought treatment from Meth addiction than any other
    substance besides alcohol (19.1%).
  • Despite the high level of availability, lifetime use among Colorado
    teens aged 12-17 is trending downward at 3.2%.
  • Public awareness programs like the one Colorado Meth Project is
    delivering have contributed to these positive trends. In 2013, 81% of
    Colorado teens said their friends would give them a hard time for
    trying Meth, up 5 points since the Colorado Meth Project launched in
    2009.

“Having healthy peer influences is a critical factor in preventing the
use of substances like Meth,” said Kent MacLennan, executive director of
Colorado Meth Project. “This year’s Meth Awareness Week theme ‘Raise the
Volume’ seeks to encourage Colorado youth to speak up to support their
peers to help them make good choices. Social media is central to
engaging teens in this effort.”
