Dr. Nick Bernthal of Orthopaedic Institute for Children Awarded Prestigious Traveling Fellowship From the American Orthopaedic Association

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#oiforc–Dr. Nicholas Bernthal, chief of musculoskeletal oncology at UCLA and
faculty member at Orthopaedic Institute for Children, has been awarded
the prestigious American-British-Canadian (ABC) Traveling Fellowship
from the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA).

The AOA’s Traveling Fellowship recognizes young leaders (under the age
of 45) for their early contributions to orthopaedics and promotes their
leadership skills to the broader orthopaedic community. As a result of
this honor, Dr. Bernthal and his four fellow recipients will this spring
travel for 4-5 weeks to the United Kingdom and South Africa to further
foster their knowledge and leadership skills in the field of
orthopaedics.

“At a relatively young age Dr. Bernthal has already become a role model
among his peers and is among the best and the brightest of his
generation,” said Anthony Scaduto, M.D., chief executive officer of the
Orthopaedic Institute for Children. “We are honored to have him part of
our faculty and are so proud that he is being rightfully acknowledged
for his contributions, achievements and dedication to the field of
orthopaedic medicine.”

Dr. Bernthal’s varied career has taken him from playing basketball for
Princeton University to working in South Africa on HIV/AIDS policy to
Cornell University for medical school and eventually to an orthopaedic
residency at UCLA. After fellowships in orthopaedic research at UCLA and
orthopaedic oncology at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, Dr. Bernthal
joined the UCLA and OIC faculty where he has become an NIH-funded
investigator developing a research program in implant infections. He
also founded UCLA’s Global Orthopaedic Initiative.
