Ebates Holiday Survey: It’s a Christmas Surprise! Parents Are Closeted Gamers and Teens Forego Trendy Gifts in Favor of Sweets

Gaming Consoles Are Top Holiday Gift for Parents, While Teens Rank
Sweets and Sporting Goods in Their Top 5; Majority of Americans to Shop
Online on Thanksgiving Weekend

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Ebates,
a leader and pioneer in cash back shopping and subsidiary of the global
internet services company Rakuten, announced today the first results of
its Holiday 2016 Survey. For the first time ever, parents rank a gaming
console higher than teens on their holiday wish lists—and teens forego
the trendy tech gifts, like Snapchat Spectacles, and opt for sweets as a
top choice of “traditional” holiday gifts. Additionally, almost all
Americans (90 percent) plan to spend their Thanksgiving weekends hitting
the shops with 73 percent shopping online and 42 percent shopping on the
go via mobile devices.

The national survey, which was conducted online by Propeller Insights on
behalf of Ebates in October 2016 and fielded among 1,035 adults and 500
teens, revealed that clothing and shoes were the number one items
Americans will purchase during Thanksgiving and Black Friday (64
percent), followed by toys (61 percent), electronics (53 percent) and
gaming consoles (31 percent).

“I’m Finally as Cool as My Kids”

While Snapchat Spectacles and a VR headset were predicted to be the “it”
gifts this year, it turns out that both parents and teens would most
like to see a new laptop or tablet this season (44 percent for adults
and 47 percent for teens). This is followed by:

who said this

A gaming console   28 percent   The new iPhone   34 percent
New iPhone   22 percent   A gaming console   31 percent
Digital camera   22 percent   Digital camera   19 percent

Surprisingly, parents ranked a gaming console over an iPhone, which is
the opposite of what teens chose.

Out With the Old and In With the New

When it comes to which traditional gifts Americans would most like to
receive, both parents and teens chose clothing and shoes as the top
items on their “traditional” wish lists (62 percent for adults and 60
percent for teens). Other popular items include:

Home electronics (i.e., vacuum, washing machine, etc.)   33 percent   Accessories (i.e., jewelry, handbag, etc.)   35 percent
Cookware or cooking utensils   31 percent   Sporting goods   23 percent

This year’s teens seem to have quite the sweet tooth, ranking sweets
above accessories and sporting goods.

Parents and teens also agreed that tools/hardware are their last choice
when it comes to which “traditional” gift they’d be most excited to
receive (20 percent for adults and 5 percent for teens).

Honolulu or Bust

Parents are in luck this year: teens think their parents most want a
vacation for Christmas or Hanukkah (40 percent), and parents
agreed—American adults chose a vacation with their kids as the
experiential gift they’re looking forward to most (44 percent).

Where do most American adults want to go with their kids? Honolulu was
the clear winner, with almost one-fifth of Americans (17 percent) opting
for fun in the sun. Other popular choices included New York City (14
percent), Las Vegas (10 percent), Rome (9 percent) and Paris (8 percent).

The survey also discovered that parents think their teen most wants a
gaming console (41 percent), which was the third most popular choice for
teens, preceded by a laptop or tablet and the new iPhone.
