First Fred Claire Celebrity Golf Classic Benefiting City of Hope at Oakmont Country Club, Aug. 14

DUARTE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The first Fred
Claire Celebrity Golf Classic
will feature an All-Star lineup of
former Major League Baseball players and other celebrities at Oakmont
Country Club in Glendale, California, on Monday, Aug. 14, with all
proceeds going to City of Hope, the world-renowned medical, scientific
research and treatment center.

“I’m honored to be working with City of Hope and to be part of an event
that will benefit this wonderful cancer research and treatment center,”
said Fred Claire, the former executive vice president and general
manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. “In seven-plus weeks of treatments
at City of Hope, I have seen the wonderful work by the doctors, staff
and volunteers. I have seen firsthand both the care that is provided and
the need to continue to do everything we can to provide funding to fight
cancer.”

City of Hope and a volunteer staff, that was assembled with the help of
Claire, has rounded up a great group of celebrities to participate in
the tournament and dinner, which will be presented by City of Hope’s National
Insurance Industry Council
. Among the celebrities participating are:
Shawn Green, Orel Hershiser, Mickey Hatcher, Maury Wills, Reggie Smith,
Bill Russell, Eddie Murray, Tommy John, Ted Sizemore, Doug DeCinces,
Jaime Jarrin, Ross Porter, Wes Parker and many others.

“We are deeply grateful to Fred, the National Insurance Industry Council
and the celebrity players for their help in developing better cures for
people with cancer,” said Stephen J. Forman, M.D., the Francis &
Kathleen McNamara Distinguished Chair in Hematology and Hematopoietic
Cell Transplantation and director of City of Hope’s T cell Immunotherapy
Research Laboratory. “It is only with help from people like them that we
were able to make such progress in these past few decades.”

Claire has been sharing his story with the goal of helping others while
continuing treatment for cancer in his neck that required surgery on
Oct. 14 of last year.

“My cancer started with a spot on my lip and if I had protected that
area from many days in the sun, that may have led to a different
outcome,” said Claire. “If I can help just one person with this message
of the dangers of the sun and need for protection, it will be very
rewarding to me.”

The shotgun start is slated for 11:30 a.m. and the cocktail reception
begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner and awards following at 6 p.m.

Golf spots and sponsorships are available by contacting Ari Castellanos
at City of Hope at 626-315-0867 or visiting the website at CityofHope.org/fred-claire.

Early sponsors for the event include Fox Transportation, Chivaroli &
Associates, Athens Administrators, Aon and Crump Life.
