Local Surgeon/Gymnast Dr. Mike Canales to Serve as Official Announcer for NCAA Gymnastics Championships
CLEVELAND–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Dr. Mike Canales, a foot and ankle surgeon at St. Vincent Charity
Medical Center and Ohio State University gymnastics legend, will be
serving as official meet announcer for the 2016 NCAA Gymnastics
Championships later this month. Dr. Canales has been the official meet
announcer for the Ohio State Buckeyes’ men’s gymnastics team for the
third year in a row and that’s his voice and expert commentary you heard
if you attended the 2016 Big Ten Conference Championships this past
weekend.
Dr. Canales, who just performed in his record-breaking 20th
consecutive Ohio State Alumni Exhibition at the age of 38, remains in
competitive form himself and will be able to share his up-to-the-minute
knowledge of all facets of his sport with gymnastics fans eagerly
awaiting the pinnacle event of men’s collegiate gymnastics when the NCAA
Championships come to Ohio State April 14-16. He will also serve as
keynote speaker and emcee for the NCAA’s Men’s Gymnastics Banquet on
April 14th.
Wearing multiple hats in support of his beloved Buckeyes, Dr. Canales
surgically repaired Buckeye gymnastics star Jake Dastrup’s torn Achilles
(he also repaired former Cleveland Cavaliers great Zydrunas Ilgauskas’
forefoot and treated him for a foot-threatening infection) – enabling
Dastrup to return this season — and he remains in close contact with
many Olympic Gymnastics legends who turn to him for guidance – both from
a gymnastics and health perspective. His wife also happens to be Olympic
Gold Medalist Dominique Moceanu.
Aside from the rings and the announcer’s booth, Dr. Canales brings his
unique perspective and knowledge of fitness and human anatomy to benefit
every patient he treats at St. Vincent’s, where he specializes in
advanced podiatric medicine and surgery, providing complete medical and
surgical care for injuries and conditions of the foot and ankle. His
special interests include reconstructive surgery, trauma treatment and
sports medicine for the foot and ankle.
Dr. Canales holds a degree in podiatric medicine from Kent State
University of Podiatric Medicine and a bachelor’s degree in molecular
genetics from Ohio State University. He completed his residency training
in podiatric medicine and surgery at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center
where he practices today. Dr. Canales has co-authored several published
works and serves as a national speaker on numerous podiatric medicine
and surgery topics.
