Mercury Holidays: The Rise of the Solo Traveller as Brits Go It Alone this Summer

• Single person bookings up 18 per cent on last year

LONDON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–It used to be a family affair but more of us than ever are going it
alone this summer and embarking on a solo holiday.

Agents say individual bookings are up 18 per cent on this time last year
– with Malta the most popular place to take a ‘me time’ break.

According to research from travel specialists, Mercury Holidays, the
island destination tops the list of solo holiday hotspots, followed by
Cyprus then Madeira.

Tours also remain a popular choice for single travellers with 25% of
all rooms booked by solo holiday-makers, with Sacred Peru being the most
popular ahead of China and Vietnam.

Their report also found more people are travelling alone for business
too – with eight per cent more of us working abroad without our
colleagues this year than in 2014.

The research supports the 2015 Visa Global Travel Intentions Study which
found one in four of us (24 per cent) took our last foreign trip alone –
up from 15 per cent in 2013.

Commenting on the findings, Martin Bugeja, Founder and Chairman of
Mercury Holidays says: “Whilst there’s a general tendency to perceive
single travellers as being young and single, the evidence actually shows
that they’re more likely to be married or in a long-term relationship.

“A lot of people will no doubt be surprised at this trend, but what
we’ve come to find is that you can’t easily categorise single travellers.

“For instance, our research discovered that women were more likely to
travel abroad independently than men, and people of all ages have booked
a holiday with us through one of our single deals. Our Escorted Tours
