Nebraska Meeting Statewide Suicide Prevention Goals with Kognito Simulations for PK-12 School Personnel

All Schools Have Free Access to Evidence-Based Virtual Role-Play
Simulations

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Kognito,
a leader in immersive learning simulations, today announced a contract
with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to
provide its At-Risk
for
PK-12
Educators simulations
to all school personnel in Nebraska. The grade-tailored simulations
enable schools to meet the requirements of Nebraska LB 923 at no cost.
LB 923 requires school personnel to have at least one hour of suicide
awareness and prevention training each year. Public school nurses,
teachers, counselors, school psychologists, administrators, school
social workers, and any other appropriate personnel are legislatively
mandated to participate.

Kognito’s At-Risk online simulations are research-proven and
cost-effective tools to prepare teachers and staff to identify students
in distress and connect them with support. Unlike traditional training
programs, Kognito’s At-Risk simulation goes beyond building
knowledge and awareness about mental health. By providing users with the
ability to practice challenging conversations with virtual students, the
simulation builds the user’s skills and confidence to apply best
practice techniques when approaching a student, building rapport, and,
if necessary, connecting them with support services.

In anticipation of the legislation, the DHSS applied for and was awarded
a five-year Garrett Lee Smith (GLS) Youth Suicide Prevention grant for
$3,646,939 from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration (SAMHSA). DHHS is using a small portion of the grant to
fund the use of Kognito’s At-Risk simulations. The Kognito At-Risk
simulations were selected as the preferred gatekeeper training model
because it is evidence-based, highly engaging and easy for educators to
access and use. Since the August 1 launch, 20,000 teachers,
administrators and other school personnel have been trained with the
Kognito simulations.

“Nebraska DHHS has demonstrated strong leadership and put together an
exemplary coalition of partners,” said Ron Goldman, CEO of Kognito.
“Kognito is proud to have a role in this model statewide initiative to
prevent youth suicide.”
