Novia Strategies Congratulates Jewish Hospital, Winner of Healthcare Purchasing News CS/SPD Department of the Year Award

POWAY, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Novia Strategies, Inc. congratulates its client Jewish
Hospital
, a KentuckyOne Health quaternary facility in Louisville,
KY, and the winner of Healthcare Purchasing News’ SPD
Department of the Year award
. Since 1993, HPN has recognized sterile
processing departments to emphasize the dedicated team effort required
to make central service successful. HPN presented the award to
Jewish Hospital during the IAHCSMM Annual Conference, where Novia
leaders Susan Bisol, Director, and Derek Mudd, Consultant, were on hand
to congratulate the winners.

“Novia is incredibly proud to have had the opportunity to partner with a
committed client like Jewish Hospital,” says Bill Denton, COO of Novia
Strategies. “From the very beginning of our engagement, their SPD
leadership showed their foresight and passion to develop an excelling
sterile processing department that would ensure their OR delivered the
highest possible quality of patient care.”

According to HPN, Jewish Hospital was named 2016 SPD Department
of the Year for the “capabilities and skills of Jewish’s SPD team not
only to support its facility’s Operating Room department but also the
needs of other facilities within its IDN.” In its May cover article, HPN
goes on to recognize the team’s commitment to create a strong bond of
trust with the OR, their innovativeness in establishing a dedicated OR
Liaison position, and their foresight to position themselves for future
growth.

For Jewish Hospital, the award comes after many years of hard work and
commitment – with Novia Strategies partnering with them at the beginning
of that journey. The goal of Novia’s 15-month-long engagement with
Jewish Hospital, which began in 2010: Redress declining surgical
volumes, reinvigorate physicians and position Jewish’s surgical and CSSD
departments for the future.

“Novia played a pivotal role in helping the team begin a very complex
journey,” says Brian Doheny, COO at Jewish Hospital during the Novia
project and now Director of Physician Service Operations with Humana
Pharmacy. “Novia identified the need for new CS/SPD leadership both at
the departmental level and at the system level, and they provided the
reinforcement to senior management for us to create new leadership
positions. This in turn provided a strong foundation, which the team at
Jewish Hospital was able to continue to build on over the years. The
team at Jewish Hospital deserves this industry recognition from Hospital
Purchasing News as CS/SPD Department of the Year.”

Susan Bisol, the Novia Director who led the project, describes some of
the project’s achievements: “Together we undertook a system-wide SPD
transformation initiative, which encompassed instrument reprocessing,
the physical plant and production equipment, information technology to
improve instrument throughput, regulatory practices, standards and
education,” says Susan Bisol, Director of Novia Strategies. “Through
this transformation, we identified and corrected environment of care
issues, ensured regulatory compliance, taught a certification course,
and laid the foundation that Jewish Hospital’s SPD leadership and staff
developed into industry best practice.”

The key to success was the creation of an Operating Room Executive
Committee, Bisol explains. Unlike the more siloed committees seen in
many clients, Novia’s OREC approach brings together a multidisciplinary
team of clinicians and department leaders – including CSSD leaders.
Throughout the engagement, the team met regularly to govern the
perioperative functions, identify and resolve issues, establish and
enforce rules among medical staff, and establish and monitor success
metrics.

“Our client’s OREC really engaged with the process,” Bisol says. “They
very quickly instilled an expectation of accountability among all
committee members, which fuelled their improvements in departmental
performance.”
