SheKnows Media Announces “NextGen Feminists in the Public Eye” as Closing Keynote Discussion at #BlogHer16: Experts Among Us, Aug. 4-6 in Los Angeles

Actors Matt McGorry and Jurnee Smollett-Bell and boxing champion
Heather Hardy join the panel moderated by Jess Weiner, CEO of Talk to
Jess, as part of the final general session sponsored by Dove

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–SheKnows
Media
, a leading women’s media company with 79 million unique
visitors per month* and a total reach of nearly 292 million social media
fans, today announced its closing #BlogHer16:
Experts Among Us
keynote titled “NextGen Feminists in the Public
Eye,” featuring actors Matt McGorry of “How to Get Away with
Murder,” Jurnee Smollett-Bell, star of WGN America’s
“Underground,” and U.S. women’s boxing champion Heather Hardy.

The panel, set to take place Aug. 6 at the JW Marriott L.A. LIVE, will
be moderated by Jess Weiner, a social entrepreneur and the Chief
Executive Officer of Talk to Jess, a consulting and strategy firm that
advises global brands on the issues facing today’s women and girls.

Iconic beauty brand Dove
will kick off the conference’s final segment with a closing keynote that
will focus on the brand’s commitment to helping women and girls develop
a positive relationship with beauty. Most recently, Dove launched the #MyBeautyMySay
campaign
to challenge the biased way women are represented in the
media – particularly female athletes.

Too often, media commentary references a woman’s appearance in a way
that diminishes her accomplishments and chips away at her confidence and
holds her back. Unfortunately, this commentary is leaving a lasting
impact on the next generation. Research shows 6 in 10 girls with low
body-esteem are more likely to stop doing the things they love,
including opting out of sports activities. Jen Bremner, Director of
Marketing at Dove
, will deliver the closing remarks with a strong
call to action to empower the SheKnows Media community to have a say in
the conversation and use their influence to tell the media to start
reporting on female athletes’ achievements and to stop judging women by
looks alone.

Following this inspiring keynote, the “NextGen Feminists in the Public
Eye” panel discussion will then explore prominent millennials’ role in
taking up the feminist advocacy torch and how these accomplished
speakers are using their position in the public eye to be vocal
advocates and evangelists for equality and justice.

The keynote theme is underscored by the results of Hatch,
SheKnows Media’s mission-driven digital storytelling and media literacy
program for tweens and teens, which has found over the course of dozens
of workshops that Generation Z is passionate about gender equality
issues. It is also based on findings from SheKnows Media’s new study, #TheFWord
Study on Feminism
, which revealed that while there are people who
understand and agree with the stated goals of feminist advocacy but
remain wary of being labeled as a “feminist” themselves, the millennial
generation is wholeheartedly taking up the cause and claiming the label.

“Through our research, and what we’ve learned via Hatch, it’s clear that
millennials and Generation Z are some of the most ardent advocates for
feminist issues – from equal pay to reproductive rights to leadership
opportunities for women,” said Samantha Skey, SheKnows Media’s
President and Chief Revenue Officer
. “We are excited to offer this
panel as our closing keynote at #BlogHer16: Experts Among Us to ignite
powerful conversation about how to make the movement more inclusive and
relevant to all women and men.”

McGorry, Smollett-Bell, Hardy and Weiner join a line-up of impressive
main stage speakers at #BlogHer16: Experts Among Us, including Kim
Kardashian West
, Aisha
Tyler
, Sheryl
Crow
, Sarah
Michelle Gellar
and Mayim
Bialik
