Steve Cohen Inaugurates Veterans Care Summit in Washington D.C.

WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Steve Cohen urged the more than 200 scientists, doctors, and academics
attending the inaugural Cohen Veterans Care Summit in Washington, D.C.
to solve the riddles of PTSD and TBI.

“The treatments we have today fall short. There are no cures,” Cohen
said. “Together, we’re going to change that.”

Cohen, the founder of Point72 Asset Management, typically donates about
$50 million annually to various charitable causes. This project,
however, is personal: his son Robert joined the Marine Corps after
college and deployed to Afghanistan in 2010.

“Robert came home in good shape, but many of his friends did not,” Cohen
said. It was concern for this population that prompted Cohen to fund
both the Cohen Veterans Network clinics and Cohen Veterans Bioscience
research institute.

The Cohen Veterans Network provides free mental health care to veterans
and their families, regardless of the status of their discharge. Working
in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Cohen
Veterans Network gives veterans access to behavioral health care,
counseling, psychiatry, and other services – and even veterans with
other-than-honorable or dishonorable discharges can receive services.

Since the 9/11 attacks, more than 2.7 million veterans have served in
the military. A significant number have experienced mental health issues
owing to combat service or traumatic brain injury, and the suicide rates
among veterans have remained alarmingly high.

“In 2014 alone, more than 7400 veterans committed suicide,” Cohen said.
“Let me put that in context for you: That’s more deaths in one year than
all Americans killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.”

“We can’t accept that,” Cohen said. “We won’t accept that.”

There are also broader implications of Cohen’s project. The research
furthered by the Cohen Veterans Bioscience institute could potentially
assist the estimated nine million Americans who suffer from PTSD and the
additional two million Americans with TBI, veteran and civilian alike.
