Why U.S. businesses should pay attention to Hispanics

A new report should have American businesses paying close attention to Hispanic consumers and their buying power. The report released Thursday by Partnership for a New American Economy shows that Hispanic households, both native and foreign-born, account for a large portion of the countrys overall spending power. In 2013 alone, Hispanics were responsible for $605 billion in spending power. Foreign-born Hispanics made up a significant portion of that, with their spending power totaling $287 billion. Overall, Hispanic households held one out of every $10 of disposable income in the United States in 2013. In 2013, Hispanic households contributed more than $190 billion in tax revenues, including nearly $67 billion in state and local tax payments. Of the total contributions in tax revenues by Hispanics, foreign-born Hispanic households contributed more than $86 billion in tax revenues. Hispanics are not only increasing in political clout, but theyre also increasing in terms of their impact on the economy, said Rudy Fernandez, former special assistant to President George W. Bush. Fernandez joined a conference call with reporters Thursday to discuss the report findings. He also noted that because the Hispanic population is so young, the $605 billion of purchasing power of Hispanics in 2013 should be seen as a floor and as a very conservative estimate. Certainly, we should all expect it to rise rapidly as we see that young generation begin to receive college degrees and get educated and enter that demographic that all businesses are after, which is that key 18- to 34-year-old demographic with a lot of disposable income, Fernandez said. The report also finds that in some states, Hispanics account for an even larger share of spending power and tax revenues. For example, Hispanic households in Texas and California had more than $100 billion in after-tax income in 2013. That means they accounted for more than one of every $5 available to spend in each of those two states that year. Hispanics in Florida saw similar results. They contributed more than one out of every $6 in tax revenue paid by residents of the state. And in Arizona, their earnings after taxes accounted for almost one-sixth of the spending power in the state. SEE ALSO: Business leaders to showcase economic power of Latinos at a summit Furthermore, the report shows that Hispanics are also major contributors to the nations Social Security and Medicare programs. In 2013, Hispanic households contributed more than $98 billion to Social Security and almost $23 billion to Medicare. Foreign-born Hispanics in particular contributed more than $46 billion to Social Security and more than $10 billion to Medicare. Fernandez said these findings show Hispanics contribute more to Medicare than they take out in terms of benefits. When you look at the future of programs like Medicare and Social Security, the growing Hispanic communitywhich is younger than the average population and thus has many more years of employment and contributions to make to Social Security and Medicareis key to the sustainability of those programs, he said. Other experts who joined the conference agreed that American businesses are taking notice of the purchasing power of Latinos, but added that challenges remain. Bernie Navarro, president of Benworth Capital Partners, said he believes the companies who want to capture more market share are taking note of the growing demographics and purchasing power of Hispanics. He pointed to Fusion as an example. But Navarro also said there are still some companies that dont know how to communicate with Hispanics. One explanation is that Hispanics are not monolithic when it comes to the way they communicate. For example some might find it easier to communicate in Spanish, while others prefer English and some feel comfortable communicating in both languages. Dr. Arun Sharma, Marketing Professor, University of Miami School of Business Administration, echoed that sentiment. I think most people understand the power of the Hispanic customer, he said. Americans may be over Black Friday: Sales down 11 percent

This year, retailers went the extra mile to attract shoppers to their stores, online or physical, including opening their doors on Gray Thursday (or Thanksgiving, as it was once known). However, the numbers are in, and it seems like one thing is clear: Consumers excitement over Thanksgiving weekend deals are waning. Could they just be tired of Black Friday and its ever-earlier increasing hype? SEE ALSO: Latin American countries jump on the Black Friday bandwagon Thanksgiving weekend sales slid 11 percent from 2013, dropping from $57.4 billion to $50.9 billion, according to the National Retail Federations (NRF) preliminary survey results. These numbers came as a surprise, given the fact that most stores opened earlier than ever this year, showcasing doorbuster deals on Thanksgiving evening instead of waiting until Friday. The drop in sales may suggest that most consumers dont want to shop on Thanksgiving, yet online sales werent any better. Online shoppers spent an average of $159.55 over the four-day holiday weekend, down over 10 percent from last year. According to The New York Times, executives at the NRF were stunned at the unexpected drop-off of sales. Matthew Shay, the president and chief executive of NRF, said that one explanation for the surprisingly low sales could be that there are a significant number of Americans out there for whom the recession is not yet over. Despite the low sales over the weekend, the NRF still expects sales to remain strong throughout the holiday season. The federation estimates sales will grow to $616.9 billion, a 4.1 increase from last year. Its going to be a dogfight for the entire season every day, every minute, Shay said. Holiday sales are now a marathon, not a sprint. Shays marathon analogy may be right, as Cyber Monday is still expected to be the busiest online shopping day of the year, as it has been since 2010. Many retailers are extending their online sales to Cyber Week or even Cyber Month, however, so finding knockout deals isnt as likely as it was years prior. Cyber Monday offers arent super compelling, but dont need to be, Sucharita Mulpuru, a Forrester analyst, told the Associated Press. Its been the biggest shopping day of the year for the last few years, so they know that people are going to come. Even though more consumers are expected to shop online this year, the way in which they are shopping is changing. The NRF expects one in five consumers to use a mobile device to shop for deals on Cyber Monday, and the ease and convenience of shopping on smart phones is expected to spur growth of online sales. According to IMB Digital Analytics Benchmark, mobile traffic accounted for a majority of all online traffic over Thanksgiving weekend, making this the first year that more people shopped on their phones during the four-day holiday weekend than on computers. After all, it may just turn out that Americans are over Black Friday.
