Actress Gwyneth Paltrow has a lot of followers and fans when it comes to her healthy living blog “Goop,” but sometimes experts indicate the 42-year-old celebrity doesn’t always get it right when she makes recommendations. Such is the case when Paltrow recently recommended followers enjoy a v-steam, which is a spa-designed steam cleaning of the vagina and uterus. SEE ALSO: A new source of antibiotics found in…vaginal bacteria? “The real golden ticket here is the Mugworth V-Steam: You sit on what is essentially a mini-throne, and a combination of infrared and mugwort steam cleanses your uterus, et al,” she wrote on her blog. “It is an energetic release—not just a steam douche—that balances female hormone levels. If you’re in LA, you have to do it.” Female health experts aren’t so enthusiastic about the idea of a v-steam, however. Dr. Amos Grunebaum, an ob-gyn at New York Presbyterian Hospital, told the Daily News the risks far outweigh any benefits for this particular procedure, and worst-case scenario could even result in a person’s death. There have been a handful of reported cases where too much air or water pressure in the vagina has been deadly, and what’s more, steam could potentially migrate to the fallopian tubes or abdominal cavity, causing illness or miscarriages if a woman is pregnant. Paltrow isn’t the only celebrity to show interest in the v-steam. The reality TV show Tia & Tamera, which follows grown-up stars Tia and Tamera Mowry, showed the twins having a spa day during which they both experienced a v-steam. According to the Korean history behind the procedure, it is supposed to fight infection, reduce stress, promote fertility, and ease PMS. Western doctors aren’t sold on the benefits though, stating there is virtually no research behind the practice and too much research on how douching in any form can be bad for a woman’s health. Douching, or the practice of washing out the vagina, upsets the natural balance of bacteria and can result in an increased risk for infection. It has also been linked to an increased risk for cervical cancer and pelvic inflammatory disease. SEE ALSO: 7 ways to remedy vaginal dryness “If you want to feel relaxed get a good massage — if you want to relax your vagina, have an orgasm,” blogged Dr. Jen Gunter, a California ob-gyn who specializes in vulvovaginal disorders. “Mugwort or wormwood or whatever when steamed, either vaginally or on the vulva, can’t possibly balance any reproductive hormones, regulate your menstrual cycle, treat depression, or cure infertility Even steamed estrogen couldn’t do that.”

The post Experts: ‘Don’t take Gwyneth Paltrow’s vagina advice’ appeared first on Voxxi.

Emma Watson, actress known around the world as “Harry Potter’s” Hermione Granger, has an exciting new role to announce. The 24-year-old told fans this week she will star in a new Disney live-action. “I’m finally able to tell you… that I will be playing Belle in Disney’s new live-action Beauty and the Beast!” she wrote over social media Monday. “It was such a big part of my growing up, it almost feels surreal that I’ll get to dance to ‘Be Our Guest’ and sing ‘Something There’. My six year old self is on the ceiling – heart bursting. Time to start some singing lessons. I can’t wait for you to see it.” SEE ALSO: Bizarre health fads celebrities follow Though not much is known about the much-anticipated film, Watson is busy preparing for it, sticking to the fitness routine she prefers which includes being comfortable with her body shape. “I’ve accepted my body shape more as I’ve got older,” she said in an interview with Examiner. “I went through a stage of wanting to have that straight-up-and-down model look, but I have curves and hips, and in the end you have to accept yourself as you are.” Emma keeps her celebrity figure through yoga, dancing and playing tennis, among other things. She indicated that it took a long time for her to understand that being rail-thin wasn’t the same as being healthy, and she expressed concern that so many young girls struggle with body ideals. “It makes me sad to hear girls constantly putting themselves down,” she said. “We have these unbelievably high expectations of ourselves, when actually we’re human beings and out bodies have a function. We say that the pressure is coming from men, but actually it’s from each other. I think women feel so much pressure these days and it can turn us against each other. But we really damage our own confidence when we put ourselves down, so I try not to.” As for her diet, Watson knows how important it is to pair nutrition with fitness. She told The Celebrity Workout her diet revolves around eating what she likes–with a few golden rules. The “Harry Potter” star keeps added sugar, saturated fat and salt at a minimum, while loading up on fresh fruits, vegetables, leans meats and healthy salads. She indicated that because she loves food and loves to cook, she eats “nice meals” and just modifies her exercise routine to match. SEE ALSO: Celebrity secrets to getting in shape after giving birth “Sports really make me feel good about myself,” Emma told Star Magazine. “For some reason, girls seem to think [being athletic] is unfeminine and they worry about being ‘pretty.’ But I feel the most pretty when I come off the pitch after a field hockey game and I’ve got pink cheeks and bright eyes.”

The post Emma Watson’s diet secrets as she preps for ‘Beauty and the Beast’ appeared first on Voxxi.

Comedian Joan Rivers passed away on September 4th, 2014 after undergoing what was to be a routine upper endoscopy, or EGD. Though anesthetic complications are not unheard of and can be no fault of attending physicians, new controversial evidence suggests that unauthorized procedures as well as inattention to Rivers during her visit were what ultimately led to her demise. The scheduled EGD also came with possible biopsy/possible polypectomy procedure and possible dilation of the esophagus. Due to complications during the procedure, Rivers’s blood oxygen levels dropped too low and she started to experience brain damage. SEE ALSO: How could Joan Rivers’s routine procedure go so wrong? Joan’s daughter, Melissa, has filed a lawsuit against the clinic, indicating in a statement it was “reckless, grossly negligent and wanton.” “What ultimately guided me was my unwavering belief that no family should ever have to go through what my mother, Cooper and I have been through,” she said in a statement, referring to her son. “The level of medical mismanagement, incompetency, disrespect and outrageous behavior is shocking and frankly, almost incomprehensible.” Extra procedures that weren’t authorized in writing According to the lawsuit filed, Joan entered the clinic and gave written consent to have an endoscopy, or EGD, with possible biopsy/possible polypectomy and possible dilation of the esophagus performed. No other procedures were authorized in writing. For reasons unknown to Melissa, her mother was first given a layrngoscopy, a procedure she did not consent to in writing, and it was during this first procedure that her oxygen saturation levels were noted as too low. The lawsuit then indicates, as reported by CNN, that attending doctors Dr. Gwen Korovin, Dr. Lawrence Cohen and Dr. Renuka Bankulla went on to perform the EGD originally consented to, though the procedure had to be stopped and restarted as Rivers’s oxygen levels continued to fall below the safe margin. Despite on-going issues with providing adequate oxygen to the brain, Dr. Cohen took time to take a selfie with Joan Rivers after he had finished the EGD. Dr. Gwen Korovin then stated she wanted to perform a second layrngoscopy despite a concern voiced by Dr. Bankulla that the procedure could compromise Rivers’ airway. At this point, reports indicate Cohen told Bankulla she was just “being paranoid.” Joan Rivers suffered a spasm of the vocal cords making it difficult for her to breathe, and her vital signs started to drop severely. According to the official report from the medical examiner, the cause of Rivers’ death was brain damage defined as “anoxic encephalopathy due to hypoxic arrest,” that happened specifically during the layrngoscopy. “To put it mildly, we are not just disappointed by the acts and omissions leading to the death of Joan Rivers, but we are outraged by the lack of care and concern for Ms. Rivers on the part of her treating physicians and the endoscopy center where the treatment was rendered,” Melissa Rivers’s attorneys, Jeffrey Bloom and Ben Rubinowitz said, as reported by AP. SEE ALSO: Did too much Propofol kill Joan Rivers? Manhattan’s Yorkville Endoscopy clinic, when contacted by the media, indicated it did not feel it appropriate to comment on the case itself, but issued a statement of sympathy for the Rivers family. “The Rivers family has, as it has always had, our deepest sympathies and condolences,” the statement said. “The 51 physicians, nurses and staff who currently work at Yorkville remain firmly committed to providing the highest quality of care to their patients.”

The post Disturbing details emerge in Joan Rivers death lawsuit appeared first on Voxxi.

Jennifer Lopez has enviable Latina curves, but the actress admitted recently she suffered from a poor body image while dealing with post-pregnancy pounds in 2007. Lopez gained approximately 50 pounds, and she told Dr. Mehmet Oz in an interview she put on so much weight that even her nose looked fatter. Though a healthy diet–primarily vegan–and exercise are Lopez’s not-so-secret secret to her now slender body, it took one thing in particular to motivate her to lose the extra weight from her pregnancy. SEE ALSO: 5 reasons Jennifer Lopez still looks stunning That one thing was a goal, and that goal was to do a triathlon. “I don’t know what possessed me,” the 45-year-old told Dr. Oz. “I had never done a triathlon before in my life.” According to the International Triathlon Union, triathlons are activities that combine swimming, cycling and running into one event. The first recorded triathlon was in California on September 24, 1974, and since then the sport has evolved into a world-wide phenomenon. Participants generally complete the Olympic standard distances in each event of a 1500 meter swim, 40 kilometer bike and 10 kilometer run. Training for a triathlon means training for three separate sports, not just one, and therefore triathlons put many people through the test of ultimate fitness. In 2008, Jennifer Lopez made her goal a reality, completing the Nautica Malibu Triathlon, a ½-mile swim, 18-mile bike ride and 4-mile run in 2 hours, 23 minutes and 28 seconds. “Thank you guys so much,” FoxNews reported Lopez saying to the crowd after her finish. “This is an amazing day. I feel really great and so glad I finished and that I made it out of the water but more amazing than that, I feel really great that we raised $127,000 for the Children’s Hospital [of Los Angeles] and hopefully it’ll go to good use.” Since then, she told Dr. Oz, she has felt more capable, like she can do everything she used to do in her twenties now–only better. Lopez uses that motivation to stay in shape and eat clean, though she now sticks to high-intensity cardio dance exercises with light strength training. SEE ALSO: Be fit and in-shape like Jennifer Lopez Goal-setting can be an important part of weight-loss. The Mayo Clinic indicates a goal can mean the difference between success and failure, and goals allow people to remain focused and motivated. Triathlons are ideal goals because they detail an exact distance a person much achieve to complete the goal, and as a person progresses toward that event, progress is tangible in how much their running has improved.

The post What jump-started Jennifer Lopez’s weight loss journey? appeared first on Voxxi.

Actress and Dancing With the Stars judge Julianne Hough was recently asked by media outlets about her glowing skin. The celebrity readily revealed her secret, and to everyone’s surprise it wasn’t some high-end product only the super-rich could afford. Hough’s secret was none other than baby oil. “Actually funny enough, I lather myself up with baby oil in the shower,” the 26-year-old revealed to Us Weekly. “Then I pat myself down so I always feel really smooth.” SEE ALSO: Eat these to get a healthy glow without the sun Baby oil is the more consumer-friendly version of mineral oil, and most formulas on the market are just that: mineral oil mixed with a scent and a few artificial colors. They are marketed to soothe and relieve dry patches of skin and are typically described as gentle enough to use on children. But what is mineral oil, exactly, and is it really healthy to put on your skin? By definition, mineral oil is the byproduct of refining petroleum. It is called mineral oil, because petroleum is comprised of many different mineral molecules, and through the refinery process, these molecules get broken down and separated out into products like gasoline and kerosene. Mineral oil is the result of heavier mineral molecules that are separated out to be used as lubricants. “Most lubricating oils come from petroleum or crude oil. In order to get a lubricating oil from a crude oil, the crude oil must be sent through a refinery. The refinery takes from the crude oil a lot of molecules of various sizes and structures that can be used for different things,” explains Jeremy Wright from Machinery Lubrication. “Fairly large and heavy molecules are needed to work as lubricating oils. The molecules that are used with gasoline and kerosene are smaller and have fewer carbons in the structure of the molecule. The refinery puts these molecules in little silos based on size and weight, and removes impurities, enabling each of the products from the crude oil to be utilized.” Mineral oil is considered safe by most standards, but experts caution consumers need to be wary of what petroleum products they buy. Petroleum jelly, for example, is similar to mineral oil in its development, but there is always a risk carcinogenic impurities remain in low-quality commercial products. “Vaseline ( a popular brand of petroleum jelly) supposedly has all of these [components] removed,” Dr. Alan Dattner told The Huffington Post. “But there are probably plenty of petroleum jelly imitators, and one doesn’t always know the extent that they’re removed.” The same concerns exist for baby oil. What’s more, experts indicate baby oil can smother pores, leading to breakouts and other skin issues. While it may be fine for people with naturally healthy skin, individual with problem skin should avoid it. As for Julianne Hough, slathering on baby oil is just one part of her process. “My morning beauty routine is to wake up and have a really big glass of water,” she explained. “I shower, I shave with my new Venus Swirl, wash my face with Proactiv, and then I brush my teeth.” And the quick remedy for chapped lips? “I love lip balm; La Mer lip balm is my favorite.” SEE ALSO: Supplements for healthy skin: Do they really work? She added that drinking plenty of water was a healthy skin staple. “Have you ever seen the lady that had the comparison were she drank a gallon of water every day for a month? she asked US in an interview. “The before-and-after picture is insane. She didn’t change her diet, she didn’t do anything different but her whole skin, her radiance, her glow [changed], so for me water is huge.”

The post What’s in baby oil and why does Julianne Hough swear by it? appeared first on Voxxi.

Reality television star and wife of musician Ozzy Osbourne, Sharon Osbourne, announced recently she had some genetic testing done several months ago and is unsettled by the results. According to her genetic analysis conducted by a university in England, Sharon has two of four genes linked to Alzheimer’s disease. SEE ALSO: What do horses have to do with Alzheimer’s? “They test every single cell, chromosome and gene in your body; it’s like a DNA test but a million times more sophisticated,” she told the Daily Record. “The results showed I have two of the four genes that give it to you. They’re not the two major genes, but they’re still there and I have them.” Though it was not made known which genes Sharon Osbourne’s test came back positive for, the Alzheimer’s Association indicates there are a number of genes associated with Alzheimer’s but three variations that are most commonly associated with late-onset Alzheimer’s disease. These variations are from the APOE gene, a gene everyone is given two copies of, one from their mother and one from their father. APOE is broken down into several variations: APOE e2, APOE e3 and APOE e4. Genes APOE e2 and APOE e4 are linked to an increased risk for Alzheimer’s, but APOE e4 is the most common genetic variant found among patients. Individuals with one copy of APOE e4 have an increased risk for Alzheimer’s, but not as high of a risk as someone who inherited two copies of APOE e4. The APOE gene isn’t the only gene associated with this form of degenerative brain disease. The Mayo Clinic indicates advancing research has linked at least five other genes to late-onset Alzheimer’s disease, including SORL1, CLU, CR1, PICALM, and TREM2. None of these genes have been definitively identified as a cause of Alzheimer’s, only an increased risk for the condition. “I was terrified because my dad died from Alzheimer’s,” Sharon said in the interview. “It is the most soul-destroying disease. To see someone you love come down with it… it’s wicked, it really is. There is nothing I can do to prevent it, nothing. People say to take cod liver oil and do puzzles and things, but then I look at people diagnosed with dementia. My father was super active mentally, and take Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan… they were all so active, and that’s what really frightens me.” Just as there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, there is no way to 100 percent prevent the condition as an individual ages. SEE ALSO: What yellow spice may help treat Alzheimer’s? The National Institute on Aging indicates what the scientific community does know is that maintaining a healthy lifestyle—one that includes a healthy diet, physical activity, appropriate weight, and no smoking—can maintain and improve overall health and well-being. Making healthy choices can ward off a number of chronic diseases, including Alzheimer’s.

The post Sharon Osbourne’s tests confirm two genes linked to Alzheimer’s appeared first on Voxxi.

Before the month is out a new Miss Universe will be crowned, and the reigning beauty queen, Gabriela Berrios will no longer hold the title of “most beautiful woman in the universe.” While the Puerto Rican beauty will have to give up her station, she indicated to the media she will continue in her humanitarian efforts and her personal health goals. SEE ALSO: Meet the Latin American and Spain beauties at Miss Universe Those who are familiar with Gabriela’s story know she was not always what the beauty industry would consider slim, and much of her life was spent combating obesity that also affected her immediate family. “When I was 14-years-old I weighed approximately 170 pounds,” the pageant winner said in an official Miss Universe interview. “For this reason, I was teased at school and remarks were made that lowered my self-esteem. For some reason my family genetically is a little chubby an can gain weight easily. I made the decision to change. I lost over 60 pounds and went from a size 14 to a size 2. Thanks to motivation and the experiences I had in my life, I was able to go after my dreams.” Gabriela Berrios credits her weightloss and toned figure to running and an emerging fitness program named Xco Latin Workout. The exercise routine is the brain child of trainer Jackie Rodriguez, who wanted to share her weight loss success post-childbirth with other women. Jackie’s workout combines Latin rhythms and movements with light weight training to help clients tone as they burn calories more efficiently. According to the website, the Xco Latin Workout is a full-body workout with special attention placed on the arms and core, and the program claims to help people burn 33 percent mroe calories than they would in traditional cardio workouts. SEE ALSO: Venezuelan beauty queens: But at what cost? “I love to run,” said Gabriela in the interview. “I also practice a new program called Xco Latin Workout.

Jimmy Carter is, at the age of 90, working toward a very meaningful and attainable goal–and it has nothing to do with his own health. The former President is taking on the battle against Guinea worm disease, a neglected tropical disease that once affected more than 3.5 million people every year. But why did President Carter decide to take on Guinea worm disease, a considerably less-known issue when compared to other global epidemics? It was exactly for the reason that no one else was doing anything about it. SEE ALSO: Leishmaniasis: Disfiguring facial parasite “In the years 1980 to 1990, the United Nations had the Freshwater Decade [officially called the International Drinking Water and Sanitation Decade] emphasizing the importance of freshwater,” President Carter explained to NPR. “The Assistant Secretary-General at the United Nations who headed that program was my former drug czar Dr. Peter Borne, who was a friend of mine. So he came to the Carter Center to describe some of the horrible diseases that resulted from drinking bad water, including Guinea worm. And the main reason he came to the Carter Center was because he couldn’t get anyone else to tackle this problem.” The former President explained Guinea worm disease was in such remote villages that no one wanted to take on the task, so back in 1986 The Carter Center took the mission on and has been going at it ever since. “Twenty-six thousand five hundred villages were affected — and [the Carter Center] has been to every one of them,” he said. Guinea worm disease is caused by the parasitic worm Dracunculus medinensis, and is also known as dracunculiasis. The World Health Organization (WHO) indicates this parasitic worm is the largest of the tissue parasites affecting humans, and affects a host animal by migrating through the victim’s subcutaneous tissues causing severe pain especially when it occurs in the joints. Eventually the parasite emerges from the body (usually in the feet) in the form of a painful, burning blister that bursts open when exposed to water. This releases hundreds of thousand Guinea worm larvae into the water source, allowing the life cycle to start over again. Individuals with guinea worm disease often suffer from fever, nausea and vomiting as well as the blister associated with this condition. “One of the first cases of Guinea worm I ever saw was a beautiful young woman who I thought was holding a baby in her right arm,” said President Carter. “But it was actually her right breast, and it had a Guinea worm a foot long coming out of her nipple. She later had 11 other Guinea worms coming out of her body that year. On that visit we had a banker who volunteered to pay to dig a deep well for the village [so they could have clean water]. And when we went back there a year later, there was no more guinea worm. That’s what happens quite often when the villages take advantage of the advice that we give them. We let them do the work, and we give them credit for it.” The Carter Center expects that, through the introduction of clean water supplies, Guinea worm disease is set to become the second human disease in history, after smallpox, to be eradicated. It will be the first parasitic disease to be eradicated and the first disease to be eradicated without the use of a vaccine or medicine, according to the Center’s website. SEE ALSO: Schistosomiasis: a Latin American neglected tropical disease “The Carter Center is wiping out this ancient disease mainly through community-based interventions to educate and change behavior, such as teaching people to filter all drinking water and preventing transmission by keeping anyone with an emerging worm from entering water sources,” reads the strategy statement. “The Center’s strategy is to work with ministries of health to help educate people so they can help stop the spread of the disease as well as maintain political will.” Through President Carter’s efforts, instances of Guinea worm disease have been reduced from an estimated 3.5 million in 1986 to 126 in 2014. Since efforts have been made to eliminate Guinea worm disease, an estimated 80 million cases have been averted.

The post Jimmy Carter is about to end Guinea worm disease appeared first on Voxxi.

Iggy Azalea, the singer known for pop hits like “Black Widow” and “Fancy,” revealed to her fans on Twitter that she needs to take some time to deal with a medical condition. The issue, called temporomandibular joint dysfunction, or TMJ, is commonly related to stress, as Iggy indicates is so in her situation. “I don’t think western medicine all the way acknowledges what a huge toll mental stress takes on our bodies. But I do believe it is a factor,” the 24-year-old Tweeted. SEE ALSO: TMJ? No, you have TMD and here’s what to do TMJ, according to the American Dental Association (ADA), is not a single diagnosis, but an umbrella term for a handful of disorders related to the temporomandibular joints, ligaments and muscles in the face. These joints, ligaments and muscles are responsible for opening and closing the mouth when an individual chews, speaks, or swallows.” “Each TMJ has a disc between the ball and socket,” states the ADA. “The disc cushions the load while enabling the jaw to open widely and rotate or glide. Any problem that prevents this complex system of muscles, ligaments, discs and bones from working properly may result in a painful TMJ disorder.” In the case of Iggy Azalea, her TMJ disorder is reported to be related to clenching and grinding her teeth, subconscious responses of the body to stress. Many individuals experience this both while awake and while asleep. Grinding of the teeth at night can be particularly difficult to identify and treat, and is a condition known separately as bruxism. When left untreated, teeth grinding and jaw clenching typically result in TMJ disorders that make opening and closing the jaw incredibly painful. The Mayo Clinic indicates TMJ disorders often present as pain around one or both ears, an ache in the jaw, clicking or grinding when opening the mouth, difficulty chewing, and locking of the joint, among other things. SEE ALSO: Teeth grinding: What you need to know about bruxism For Iggy, the best treatment option is stress relief and relaxation of the jaw–something that may be difficult for someone in her line of work. For this reason, she informed fans via social media not to be worried about her if she needs to take some time to heal. “I don’t think it will ever prevent me from doing anything I want to, but it has made me realize it’s important to look after yourself,” Azalea told Billboard in an interview.

The post Iggy Azalea talks about her painful health condition appeared first on Voxxi.

Puerto Rican beauty Naya Rivera caught some grief after making comments on “The View” this week. The television star light-heartedly stated she felt white people showered far more frequently compared to other ethnicities; her husband, who is white, showers multiple times a day, she explained. “I have to say I have a theory about showering, [which] is that I think that white people shower a lot more than ethnics,” Rivera commented during the show. “I feel like showering more than once a day or every day is such a white people thing.” SEE ALSO: Just how many germs do we swap French kissing? Rivera’s comment wasn’t received well by other non-white viewers, who complained over social media such a comment suggested ethnic individuals were less clean or less hygienic compared to white people. Misrepresenting Latinos and other ethnicities? “When YOU tell the world YOU shower every 3 days that says more about YOU not us Naya Rivera; somethings are better left unsaid,” commented one viewer via Twitter. Rivera immediately tried to explain herself, stating, “But I can say that I am now married to a white man, and he showers a lot. Like, a lot — two, three times a day. I’m like, ‘What are you doing?’ A study says… a dermatologist says you are only supposed to shower once or twice every three days, so I’m right on the mark.” Despite the fact Naya Rivera’s comments landed her in hot water with fans and regardless of what her own personal habits might be, a growing body of research suggests less may be more when it comes to whole-body cleansing. Over the last few years, experts have made significant discoveries in relation to the human microbiome, the millions of microscopic organisms that live in and on the human body. Not only are most of these organisms harmless to a healthy individual, they are beneficial. Some organisms, like those studied by University of California San Fransisco Michael Fischbach and his team, create their own versions of antibiotics that help protect against dangerous pathogens. Other research, this time conducted by the biotech company AOBiome, looked at how washing the face daily actually removes beneficial bacteria, contributing to acne and other inflammatory conditions like diabetic ulcers. Bacteria known as ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) is an important component in sweat, but it found almost everywhere in the environment, aiding the nitrogen cycle and nitrification process. AOB acts to combat the process of inflammation by removing excess ammonia, thus relaxing blood vessels , speeding wound healing and balancing the microbiome on the skin’s surface. Excessive washing, especially with harsh soaps and cleaners can strip the body of these beneficial microorganisms. What’s more, the scientific community has only begun to investigate what all the microbes on and in the human body do, so there is not telling just how much harm we actually do by following traditional hygiene standards. SEE ALSO: The one thing you never thought might cure acne Of course, the presence and benefits of the human microbiome are no reason to go the opposite end of extreme and forgo all washing and cleanliness. Not washing at all can allow an overgrowth of bacteria.

The Kardashians are known for many things, one of them being unique health and beauty trends (think Kim Kardashian’s support of wearing a corset), and once again the latest celebrity headlines are abuzz over what is going on in this family. SEE ALSO: Bizarre health fads celebrities follow Kourtney Kardashian, who gave birth on December 14th, 2014, has been fairly quiet about her newborn but took to social media last week to announce how much is going to miss a particular part of post-pregnancy health: placenta pills. “Yummy…PLACENTA pills! No joke…I will be sad when my placenta pills run out. They are life changing! #benefits #lookitup,” read the caption to a photo Kourtney posted on Instagram this month. Yummy…PLACENTA pills! No joke…I will be sad when my placenta pills run out. They are life changing! #benefits #lookitup Une photo publiée par Kourtney Kardashian (@kourtneykardash) le Janv. 10, 2015 at 4:35 PST But despite Kourtney Kardashian’s endorsement–as well as that of other celebrity moms–the benefits of placenta pills are not yet supported by the medical community. According to the American Pregnancy Association (APA), there is little scientific research to back to practice of placenta consumption, also known as placenta encapsulation. What benefits have been reported are primarily from individual self-reporting. “Placental encapsulation is the practice of ingesting the placenta after it has been steamed, dehydrated, ground, and placed into pills,” stated the APA. “Traditionally, this is taken by the mother and is believed to impart numerous health benefits. It is frequently taken shortly after giving birth, during a woman’s menstrual period, or during menopause with the belief that it helps counter some of the symptoms of menopause.” Benefits of placenta encapsulation are rumored to include: Increased release of the hormone oxytocin, which helps the uterus return to normal size and encourages bonding with the infant. Increase in CRH, a stress-reducing hormone. Decrease in post-partum depression levels. Restoration of iron levels in the blood. Increase in milk production. Not everyone is sold on the practice of eating placenta, however. Though scientific research does not necessarily support or refute the practice, some experts feel eating placenta means taking in all the bad as well as the good. During pregnancy, the placenta is where mother and child exchange nutrients as well as waste products. This means that placenta contains toxins as well as nutrients. While this risk appears to be minimal for the mother, people who take placenta pills that are not their own can run the risk of becoming ill. SEE ALSO: Tips on how to stimulate your baby in the womb “Placental encapsulation appears to carry no inherent risk if ingested solely by the mother,” explains the APA. “Some mothers have reported experiencing negative symptoms such as dizziness or jitteriness after taking the pills. Again, most of the information regarding this practice is amassed from anecdotes, and not from research. In addition, if taken by other family members or friends, one must be aware of the possibility of passing along blood-borne diseases.” As with Kourtney Kardashian’s experience, the benefits of taking placenta pills remain a very personal experience. If you are considering this ancient practice, consult with your doctor first to make sure there are no underlying reasons to avoid placenta encapsulation.

The post Kourtney Kardashian loves her placenta pills appeared first on Voxxi.

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali was hospitalized back on December 20th after it was rumored he suddenly stopped breathing. At the time, reports indicated he was suffering from pneumonia, a common complication seen among people, like Ali, living with Parkinson’s disease. SEE ALSO: Muhammad Ali stable after he ‘stopped breathing’ Since that time, little information has been available on Ali’s condition, and his family requested media privacy when the boxing champion was admitted into medical care. The silence was broken yesterday, however, when Ali was finally released from the hospital and doctors confirmed he was not suffering from pneumonia as rumored, but had been admitted with a serious urinary tract infection. According to family spokesman Bob Gunnell, Muhammad Ali is now looking forward to celebrating his 73rd birthday on Jan. 17 and is “in great spirits and enjoying being back home,” Gunnell told AP. “He’s back in his daily routine.” A severe urinary tract infection is not uncommon for people living with Parkinson’s disease, though it has not been confirmed if Ali’s conditions were related. According to the National Parkinson Foundation, because the bladder is a muscle, it is one of the areas of the body susceptible to the effects of Parkinson’s. The bladder can become weak and eventually unable to expel urine. As urine sits in the bladder, it promotes the growth of bacteria which can lead to serious infections. SEE ALSO: Mike Alvarado arrested ahead of Brandon Rios bout Despite his health issues, Muhammad Ali continues to be an active role model though he no longer speaks at public functions. Since his retirement from boxing in 1982, he has taken on a number of humanitarian efforts and was bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush in 2005. Though his appearances have diminished over the last few years, family and friends indicate Ali is doing well and is living life to the fullest, despite his medical diagnosis.

The post Muhammad Ali finally home from hospital–but it wasn’t pneumonia after all appeared first on Voxxi.

Actress Lindsay Lohan had a slightly different New Year’s celebration last week compared to other celebrities; the 28-year-old star was vacationing in French Polynesia when she became ill with chikungunya. After posting a photo of herself and friends enjoying the beaches to social media, Lohan commented, “In good faith with good people. I refuse to let a virus effect my peaceful vacation. be safe and happy on the new year all #wildfox and a positive, healthy new year. Before I got Chikungunya. Use [bug] spray please.” SEE ALSO: Health officials: Most people living in Puerto Rico will experience chikungunya Chikungunya is a viral disease spread through an infected mosquito bite. The illness is well-known in Latin America and other tropical regions, and the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates 40 countries have on-going issues with chikungunya. Though rarely fatal, the illness causes severe–often debilitating–join pain and inflammation, accompanied by a fever, fatigue and muscle pain. Without proper or timely treatment, joint issues related to chikungunya can persist for years or become a reason for major disability later in life. “The name chikungunya originates from a verb in the Kimakonde language, meaning ‘to become contorted’. This refers to the ‘stooped’ appearance of those suffering with joint pain,” explain materials from WHO. “Symptoms are generally self-limiting and last for 2–3 days. The virus remains in the human system for 5-7 days and mosquitoes feeding on an infected person during this period can also become infected. Chikungunya shares some clinical signs with dengue and can be misdiagnosed in areas where dengue is common.” While no other reports on Lohan’s illness have surfaced, the actress’s last illness-related Tweet indicated she was still sick at the beginning of the New Year week. In a Tweet last Monday she told followers that “being sick is no fun. But Happy New Year everyone.” Last year the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued a health alert for travelers heading to Latin America and the Caribbean, explaining an outbreak of chikungunya was spreading through those regions. The CDC advised people discuss their travel plans with their physicians, especially if the patient was pregnant, over the age of 65, had pre-existing arthritis issues, or had a serious underlying medical condition, like diabetes. “CDC recommends that travelers to the Caribbean protect themselves from mosquito bites. Some travelers may be more likely to get chikungunya, have severe disease, or be at higher risk for other reasons.,” explained the agency. “There is currently no vaccine or medicine to prevent chikungunya. The only way to prevent chikungunya is to prevent mosquito bites. Preventing bites can be difficult, but it is important as you can get sick after just one bite.” SEE ALSO: New hope for prevention of chikungunya virus? While her Twitter feed suggests Lohan was still out and about enjoying her vacation, experts advise people who catch chikungunya remain isolated from areas where they may once again be bitten by a mosquito. This isn’t for the sake of that individual; the reason for avoiding exposure is because people with chikungunya can spread the disease for 5-7 days post-infection.

The post Lindsay Lohan battled chikungunya on the New Year appeared first on Voxxi.

Charlie Sheen is known for his “I don’t care” tough-guy attitude, but the actor wasn’t so confident about things just a few months ago when a cancer scare became a part of his reality. For much of 2014, Sheen was secretly dealing with the possibility of throat cancer, a potential diagnosis mentioned by his doctor when he began losing his voice on the set of “Anger Management.” SEE ALSO: Throat cancer: All you need to know The concerned actor visited a specialist who informed him a “very aggressive procedure” that could cause irreparable damage to his dental work and voice was needed to address the issue. Sheen told The National Enquirer in an interview he was terrified but determined to overcome what could potentially be a life-threatening condition. Thankfully, the actor never had to face the trials of surgery or throat cancer treatment. After seeking a second opinion, the true cause for his throat issue was revealed: “laryngeal inflammation” due to a case of acid reflux. Acid reflux is a common condition, affecting approximately 20 percent of Americans. According to the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), occurs when chronic reflux of stomach contents and acid damage the lining of the esophagus. It is possible for someone to experience occasional acid reflux without a diagnosis of GERD, but if symptoms have progressed to the point of vocal ability loss, GERD is much more likely. Though Charlie Sheen was spared surgical intervention related to cancer, there is still a chance the actor may eventually need a procedure done to address his symptoms. A big part of managing GERD is maintaining healthy lifestyle habits, including avoiding overeating–particularly acidic and fat-laden foods–and eliminating or reducing smoking and alcohol consumption. Sheen has a long history of indulging in just those things. If he cannot maintain the dietary and lifestyle changes required to manage his acid reflux, he may eventually need a surgery called a fundoplication. “Surgical therapy is available for those who do not respond to lifestyle and medication therapy or who do not wish to remain on medications,” states ASGE. “Surgery consists of wrapping the top of the stomach to reform the natural acid barrier and fixing the defect in the diaphragm and hiatal hernia if present. The decision of medical versus surgical therapy depends on how well the patient is likely to tolerate surgery, their response to medical therapy and the underlying causes of the GERD. In addition, there are several endoscopic treatments for GERD. However, these are still relatively new and, for the most part, unproven or still investigational.” SEE ALSO: Natural remedies for acid reflux Only time will tell if Charlie Sheen will be able to manage his acid reflux without extensive intervention.

The post What was Charlie Sheen’s cancer scare really about? appeared first on Voxxi.

Jennifer Lopez will forever embody all that it means to be Latina; she has stunning exotic beauty and isn’t afraid to flaunt her curves. Though she has been a sex icon for more than a decade, even fellow Latinas are wondering just how the 45-year-old celebrity manages to stay so youthful. SEE ALSO: Be fit and in shape like Jennifer Lopez There’s no doubt good genetics have a lot to do with how Jennifer Lopez keeps the ravages of age at bay, but just as much of of her youthful appearance has to do with how she lives her life. Like most celebrities, Lopez knows the importance of maintaining her appearance, but unlike many Hollywood beauties, she makes sure to avoid the common pitfalls associated with stardom. 5 reasons Jennifer Lopez looks younger than she really is She doesn’t party hard: Hollywood is known for giving celebrities access to any party substance they desire, and alcohol and drugs have been the downfall of many notorious stars. As for Lopez, she may attend the notable parties and events, but she doesn’t let the wild side of stardom affect her. Not only has she sworn off cigarettes and alcohol, she is s sticker about getting plenty of sleep at night. No sleep, cigarettes and booze are common things people who party indulge in. She makes herself workout: Even when she’s not feeling motivated, Jennifer makes sure to get her workouts in. For the star, it’s not just about maintaining her physique; it’s about maintaining her mental health as well. “Sometimes when I get home and I’m not feeling so great, I make myself go to the gym,” she’s said in Redbook. “Then I come home and take a shower, put on a great outfit, some makeup, tie my hair up, and I feel pepped up and great about myself.” She doesn’t hate herself: One of the traps many women fall into is that of self-loathing. When you hate how you look, it not only affects your physical appearance, it affects your mental well-being. Loving herself is something Jennifer has made it a point to do. “”I remember when I had baby fat and my thighs were so out of proportion to my ankles,” she told The Telegraph. “Then I remember dropping weight and being quite thin. Then, when I got pregnant, I remember watching my back, belly and butt grow and thinking, ‘I will never be the same again.’ Then I remember right after the twins were born having that weird jiggly belly — and kind of loving that, too. Because I earned that jiggly belly. Then came trying to get my body back into shape and how long that took. A whole year.” She eats healthy and sticks to a routine: Eating healthy is important for anyone, but so is sticking to a healthy lifestyle. Jennifer Lopez isn’t about jumping from fad diet to fad diet; she found something that works for her–something she believes in–and she sticks with it. According to an interview with Women’s Fitness, Lopez avoids sugar and salt but doesn’t cut anything out of her diet completely. “There are a number of weird diets out there but I don’t follow them,” she said. “I eat almost everything, only in moderation.” She listens to her doctor: Something many people are guilty of is ignoring medical advice, but not Jennifer. A health scare in 2002 related to anxiety and lack of sleep could have been much worse for the actress, but she sought care immediately and listened to her doctor’s recommendations. “I was working on a movie called Enough, I was recording an album, I was doing videos on the weekend and I was recording at night,” she explained, as reported by Yahoo Celebrity. “I had worked maybe 55 days in a row without a day off and shooting on a film, and I just one day was walking towards the set and — every time I walked towards the set my heart would start beating and I would start getting frightened.” Luckily, she took her doctor’s advice to sleep more and take better care of herself, and now she is better equipped to handle her demanding schedule.

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali is in stable condition after being taken to the hospital over the weekend. The 72-year-old reportedly stopped breathing last Friday and was revived by paramedics called to the scene. SEE ALSO: Manny Pacquiao’s workout: Not for the timid “[Family members] called 911. He was revived by the paramedics and is in ICU with fluid on the lungs. He is on a respirator and IV’s,” a source told media outlets. Ali’s spokesperson, Bob Gunnell, was less dramatic about the event, telling People in a phone interview that, “He (Muhammad Ali) went into the hospital this morning. He has a mild case of pneumonia and the prognosis is good.” Though intense exercise and a clean diet kept Ali a formidable athlete in his prime and a healthy aging adult, pneumonia is a common affliction for people over the age of 65. According to the American Lung Association (ALA), pneumonia can be viral or bacterial, but older adults are at an increased risk because of weakened immune systems as a result of the aging process. “Pneumonia tends to be more serious for infants and young children, older adults (people 65 years or older), people who have other chronic health problems, and people who have weak immune systems as a result of diseases or other factors,” states the ALA. “With treatment, most patients will improve within two weeks. Elderly or debilitated patients may need longer treatment.” It is unconfirmed whether Muhammad Ali’s additional health issues may complicate or contribute to his pneumonia, but his representative indicates there is no cause for concern. Though the Ali family has requested any more details on the scare be kept private, Muhammad Ali’s daughter, Laila Ali, Tweeted that her father is doing well. “Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers for my father,” she said on social media. “He is doing well~Y’all know he is a fighter! WE APPRECIATE ALL THE LOVE!” SEE ALSO: Parkinson’s disease: High prevalence among Hispanics Ali has been living with Parkinson’s disease since 1984, a neurological condition doctors feel may be the result of repeated head injuries. Modern medications have made it possible for the boxing champion to live a normal lifespan; however, as of 2009, Ali was no longer able to speak in public. Parkinson’s disease is known to exacerbate other illnesses, and WebMD indicates pneumonia can be a complication of the disease.

The post Muhammad Ali stable after he ‘stopped breathing’ appeared first on Voxxi.

Emmanuel “Manny” Dapidran Pacquiao, renowned Filipino champion boxer, says he is willing and able to take on undefeated Floyd Mayweather in the ring if the opportunity arises. Both Mayweather and Pacquiao belong to boxing’s welterweight division, and both boast impressive records; Mayweather with 47 wins and 0 losses; Pacquiao with 57 wins, 5 losses and 2 draws. Should such an epic battle truly happen, the outcome will be difficult to predict and may ultimately come down to who trains harder, longer. SEE ALSO: Are we closer to Pacquiao-Mayweather? yeah, no “We are ready. Let’s make it happen. May 2. Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao. Let’s do it,” Mayweather said during a Showtime interview. Pacquiao welcomed the invitation, telling skysports.com, “He [Mayweather] has reached a dead end. He has nowhere to run but to fight me. I will try my best to make this a thrilling and entertaining fight, but I doubt if he’s gonna engage me in a slugfest. You all know his fighting style. Most of his previous fights, if not all, induced us to sleep.” No professional fighter takes training lightly, and Floyd Mayweather, even though he is notorious for his high-end, flamboyant lifestyle, trains to be a winner. Manny Pacquiao’s time in the gym is likewise put to good use, and the 36-year-old does things on a daily basis most athletes wouldn’t consider doing in a lifetime. One of those training methods Pacquiao employs is that of nerve conditioning through the use of a Thai stick. Manny’s long-time trainer, Freddie Roach, told The Celebrity Workout, that Manny is one of only a few fighters who use Thai stick training. The stick, a wooden practice sword made of bamboo, is used int he process of nerve conditioning by smacking the individual all over to desensitize the body to pain. “Its mind conditioning, some fighters if they get hit, they panic,” said Roach. “But if you do the stick, and you get in the ring and get hit, you still relax and focus on the fight.” Though seemingly the most painful part of the training process, Thai stick training is only a small part of fight camps for Pacquiao. Freddie Roach’s strength and conditioning trainer Alex Ariza, told StrengthSpeedAgility Manny’s training day starts at 5 a.m. with running followed by outdoor interval training and core exercises. The fighter is given a break around mid-day to refuel before he goes to the gym for his active fighting sessions. “Freddie is an out of the box trainer,” said Ariza. “If it makes sense to him, he’ll try it. When I first talked to him, I was surprised about how much he knew about speed training, interval training and the importance of nutrition throughout the day. He knew the basics, just not the intricate details. He knows what most trainers don’t care to learn. At first there were some things I thought might not work with Manny. We kept coming up with new stuff. He thought, “If we’re going to move up weight divisions, we got to try something new”. Without Freddie, this would have never worked.” Manny’s training camp is generally only 8 weeks, explained his trainer, because Pacquiao makes sure to maintains a healthy lifestyle even when he is in between fights. Manny eats clean and fills his days with high-demand sports like basketball. He also is a big fan of jumping rope, and doing hour-long hill runs. Manny’s caloric activity levels are so high, he burns through 3 times the calories an average person would daily. SEE ALSO: Get into Hunger Games shape by…skipping? “In the first 4 weeks of training camp we keep him on a 7000 calories a day diet, and closer to the fight a few things are taken out of the diet but he still has to keep his intake up,” explained Ariza. “He has to have a protein shake before going to bed, he has one at 3am, and another one first thing in the morning. He has up to six meals a day and six protein shakes a day when in training for a fight. We have to keep weight on him, as he trains so hard. We can’t have his body dropping calories.” All the hard work has definitely paid off, showing in Manny’s 57 wins. The question is: will his training be enough to dethrone Floyd Mayweather?

The post Manny Pacquiao’s workout: Not for the timid appeared first on Voxxi.

She even talks about the importance of staying hydrated–something all women should take to heart when it comes to a healthy, clear complexion. “The Mario Badescu Drying Lotion is really good for a spot, or Tazorac, but that you have to get at the dermatologist,” Lohan said to Into the Gloss about her skin. “I freak out when I get any blemishes and I’ll pick my face—I’m so, so bad about that. The Tazorac almost works as a concealer in a way because it mattifies. I wouldn’t say that I have acne-prone skin, though—it’s normal-to-dry—especially dry if I’m traveling and not drinking enough water. I forget about that…water is so boring.” For her mental health, Lindsay focuses on the little things in life–like avoiding manicurists and doing Naam yoga. “I hate sitting through manicures—it’s therapeutic for me to put it on myself, like an exercise in patience. There was a whole ritual when I was doing the play—I’d go to my dressing room to be alone and sit on the floor at the mirror and start my nails and makeup. There’s something very calming about it,” she explained. But as much care goes into beauty and makeup choices, Lohan understands the value of staying active. She indicated that kickboxing and running were always a part of her fitness plan, but recently she has found a rewarding workout in S Factor. “Everyone should try S Factor,” she said. “It’s almost like erotic yoga—all these women in a dark room doing really sexy movements. It’s very sexual, and there are poles involved, but it’s good for you and it builds confidence and makes you think differently about how you treat your body. And you sweat so much, it’s so good. The class starts with yoga, and then some stretching that feels like Pilates. Then everyone starts to move around the room really slow and really sensual. It’s beautiful to watch. And in the second hour you’ll do a routine at the pole. ” Lohan’s description of the program is fairly accurate; according to the website, S Factor is fitness that celebrates the unique feminine movement of women. It’s a mixture of yoga, ballet, Pilates, striptease and pole dancing, and aims to not only improve overall fitness, but provide women with a stronger sense of self-confidence. SEE ALSO: Lindsay Lohan series to air on OWN Such self-confidence is evident in Lindsay Lohan’s recent interviews and slow move back into the lime-light. The actress has revealed a calmer, healthier side, though there are still glimpses of the old Lindsay Lohan we’ve come to know best. Only time will tell if she has truly made the move into a healthier way of living, but her candid interviews suggest she is focusing on her own well-being and plans to continue doing so.

The post Lindsay Lohan reveals her comeback health secrets appeared first on Voxxi.

Miley Cyrus was in the hospital last week (as her photos on Instagram kept everyone informed), but the actress/singer didn’t divulge too much about her condition other than it was a routine surgery on her wrist for a ganglion cyst. SEE ALSO: Healing three common injuries: tendonitis, pulled muscles and sprains The procedure was performed in the hospital but as an out-patient appointment, meaning Miley was back in the comfort of her own home the same day as she was admitted, and fans were able to keep up with the process through graphic photos shared on social media. “I have pizza in my veins,” Miley wrote as a caption for one picture showing the inside of her wrist. The gown is sooooo hipster A photo posted by Miley Cyrus (@mileycyrus) on Dec 12, 2014 at 8:44pm PST The Mayo Clinic indicates ganglion cysts are benign, often painful lumps, that appear along tendons or joints of the wrists, hands, feet and ankles. The lumps are vary in size and are filled with a gel-like substance. Most ganglion cysts will go away on their own; however, if they are very painful or are limiting joint function, surgical removal is often necessary. “A ganglion rises out of a joint, like a balloon on a stalk. It grows out of the tissues surrounding a joint, such as ligaments, tendon sheaths, and joint linings. Inside the balloon is a thick, slippery fluid, similar to the fluid that lubricates your joints,” states the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. “Ganglion cysts can develop in several of the joints in the hand and wrist, including both the top and underside of the wrist, as well as the end joint of a finger, and at the base of a finger. They vary in size, and in many cases, grow larger with increased wrist activity. With rest, the lump typically becomes smaller.” The exact cause of ganglion cysts are unknown, though repeated stress to the joint area appears to be a common factor. Women are more likely to have ganglion cysts compared to men, and the lumps are most often found in people between the ages of 15 and 40. Surgical intervention for ganglion cysts is considered the best option to prevent recurrence. During surgery, doctors remove the cyst as well as part of the involved joint capsule or tendon sheath. Even with this complete removal, there is a small chance the cyst will return. At this time it is not known if Miley Cyrus had surgery because the ganglion cyst was causing her pain or if she had issues with its appearance. SEE ALSO: Your stomach may be in trouble if you’re double jointed Cosmetic improvement is another common reason people have ganglion cysts surgically removed. According to the pictures Miley posted of her surgery, it is entirely possible the cyst was causing her discomfort due to its location.

The post What caused Miley Cyrus to have wrist surgery? appeared first on Voxxi.

Scarlett Johansson, some say arguably one of the loveliest women in Hollywood, is known for her fit physique and Latina-esc curves. As one of the Silver Screen’s sex symbols, a lot of pressure is placed on Johansson to maintain her figure as she enters her thirties, and even though she recently gave birth, the star looks just as fabulous as ever. SEE ALSO: From eating to sore nipples: How to stay healthy while breastfeeding How does she do it? According to Johansson, her pregnancy has a lot to do with her slimmed-down figure. In a recent interview with Barbara Walters on the annual 10 Most Fascinating People of 2014, the Avengers’ star stated motherhood was wonderful, exhausting and “magical.” “The love is just unbelievable,” she explained. “It’s very overwhelming.” As much as Johansson enjoys being a mom, it was breastfeeding that helped her get back to her red carpet figure. [Breastfeeding is] the best way to get back in shape,” she said. ” [I do] the whole bit. I’m nursing and I love it.” According to Makbib Diro, M.D., associate professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, breastfeeding can burn an extra 300-500 calories a day. The reason for this is because breast milk is a complex mixture of nutrients and immune system boosters that the body must work hard to continually produce. What’s more, many women return to their normal caloric intake once they have given birth, and this means a higher portion of the calories they take in are used to make milk. Of course, breastfeeding isn’t the only trick Scarlett Johansson has up her sleeve. The actress indicated in her interview she prefers weight lifting to cardio because she feels it gives her a total body workout while toning her muscles at the same time. “I do the same fitness routine as my big muscle-man trainer,” she said. “A lot of it is endurance, stability, and strength training. I like to work up a sweat.” SEE ALSO: Breastfeeding Mexican women at risk for triple-negative breast cancer Johansson also admits that, while a former vegan and always aware of her dietary intake, she loves bread and likely has no intention of jumping on the low-carb bandwagon anytime soon. “I love French food,” said Johansson. “I love the breads and patés — all that stuff. I don’t eat cheese, though, which shocks my French family and friends.”

The post Scarlett Johansson got back in shape by breastfeeding appeared first on Voxxi.

Singer/ Songwriter Avril Lavigne has been missing from public view since September. The only information fans have been given is that “health issues” have kept the ‘Girlfriend’ singer away from the media, but rumors suggest the absence–and health issues–may have something to do with marriage trouble. “‘I feel bad because I haven’t been able to say anything to the fans to let them no why I’ve been absent,” Avril wrote in a direct message to AvrilMusicChart. “‘I’m not feeling well. I’m having some health issues. So please keep me in your prayers. (sic)” SEE ALSO: This works better than anything else for depression Though she responded to fan’s well-wishes towards her health, the singer did not further disclose what medical ailment she was suffering from. Though the most popular rumor on social media appears to be related to marriage issues, another popular gossip trend suggests the 30-year-old may be pregnant and having related complications. Though neither scenario has been given any credence by Lavigne or her husband, Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger, both could potentially explain why Avril has been staying out of the spotlight. Marriage issues can lead to depression, and according to the Mayo Clinic, depression can result in unexplained body aches and pains as well as changes in appetite, exhaustion and difficulty sleeping, among other things. Pregnancy can also have a fair share of complications including hyperemisis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness the likes of which Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge suffered from. All these condition are just speculation, however. It is possible Avril is suffering from a medical condition the public has no previous knowledge of. At age 30, it isn’t uncommon for medical issues to start appearing. SEE ALSO: Morning sickness: Home remedies for the mom-to-be As for her marriage, Avril’s husband appears to be taking the rumors in stride. “You know my dad calls me up and he’s just like, ‘I haven’t slept in 2 days, what’s going on?’ I’m like, ‘Dad you’re not buying all this crap are you?’ You know, I get to hear all the rumor mill stuff. I find it very amusing,” he told ET Canada. “When you get out of high school, and it’s like ugh, okay. All that rumor crap. All that stuff that people say behind each other’s backs is minuscule, pales in comparison to the world of celebrity or being married to a celebrity. That’s high school multiplied exponentially,” he commented. “It’s ridiculous. How many times has Jennifer Aniston been pregnant this year? A dozen?”

The post Avril Lavigne missing from public eye since September, cites health issues appeared first on Voxxi.

Country singer Carrie Underwood has been a vegan since she was a teenager, and now that she is pregnant, she has switched her diet to vegetarian. “I have been vegetarian for about 10 years now,” Carrie told Celebrity Health and Fitness. “With pregnancy, I am definitely going more on the vegetarian side, but as soon as I am not pregnant anymore I will go back to being vegan.” SEE ALSO: Vegan children: Is eating vegan safe for developing kids? Though there are many different subcategories among vegans and vegetarians, the difference between the two main groups comes down to the inclusion of animal products in the diet. Vegans eat no animal products, meaning they not only abstain from consuming meat, they do not eat eggs, ice cream, cheese, milk, or any food items that may contain these ingredients (like cookies). Vegetarians, on the other hand, do not eat meat, but they may include non-meat products in their diets depending on their personal preferences. Carrie Underwood’s decision to go more vegetarian during her pregnancy is not surprising; experts indicate it can be difficult enough to get all the nutrients needed for pregnancy with a vegetarian diet; being completely vegan only makes nutrition more of a challenge. For women who opt to go this route, the Cleveland Clinic recommends the following diet protocol: Choose foods high in starch and fiber such as whole-grain breads, cereals, pasta, rice, fruits, and vegetables. Eat and drink at least four servings of calcium-rich foods a day to help ensure that you are getting 1200 mg. of calcium in your daily diet. Sources of calcium include dairy products, seafood, leafy green vegetables, dried beans or peas, and tofu. Vitamin D will help your body use calcium. Adequate amounts of vitamin D can be obtained through exposure to the sun and in fortified milk, eggs, and fish. Vegans should receive 10 to 15 minutes of direct sunlight to the hands, face, or arms three times per week or take a supplement as prescribed by their health care providers. Eat at least three servings of iron-rich foods per day to ensure you are getting 27 mg. of iron in your daily diet. Sources of iron include enriched grain products (rice), eggs, leafy green vegetables, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, dried beans and peas, raisins, prunes, and peanuts. Choose at least one source of vitamin C every day. Sources of vitamin C include oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, honeydew, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, green peppers, tomatoes, and mustard greens. Choose at least one source of folic acid every day. Sources of folic acid include dark, green, leafy vegetables, and legumes such as lima beans, black beans, black-eyed peas, and chickpeas. Choose at least one source of vitamin A every other day. Sources of vitamin A include carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, spinach, squash, turnip greens, beet greens, apricots, and cantaloupe. Choose at least one source of vitamin B 12 a day. Vitamin B 12 is found in animal products including fish and shellfish, eggs, and dairy products. Vegans are at risk of not consuming enough vitamin B 12. Your health care provider might recommend a vitamin B 12 supplement. Avoid alcohol during pregnancy. Alcohol has been linked to premature delivery and low birth weight babies. If you think you might have a problem with alcohol use, please talk to your health care provider so he or she can help protect you and your baby. Limit caffeine to no more than 300 mg. per day (two 5-ounce cups of coffee, three 5-ounce cups of tea, or two 12-ounce glasses of caffeinated soda). Remember, chocolate contains caffeine — the amount of caffeine in a chocolate bar is equal to 1/4 cup of coffee. The use of non-nutritive or artificial sweeteners approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is acceptable during pregnancy. These FDA-approved sweeteners include aspartame and acesulfame-K. The use of saccharin is strongly discouraged during pregnancy because it can cross the placenta and might remain in fetal tissues. Talk with your health care provider about how much non-nutritive sweetener is acceptable during pregnancy. Limit salty foods — Salt causes your body to retain water. Although there is no documented risk to mother or baby, you might want to limit extra salty foods to avoid feeling overly bloated. Do not restrict salt unless prescribed by your health care provider. Decrease the total amount of fat you eat to 30 percent or less of your total daily calories. For a person eating 2000 calories a day, this would be 65 grams of fat or less per day. Limit cholesterol intake to 300 milligrams (mg) or less per day. DO NOT DIET or try to lose weight during pregnancy. – Both you and your baby need the proper nutrients in order to be healthy. Keep in mind that you will lose some weight the first week your baby is born. SEE ALSO: Paleo-Vegan diet: Yes, it’s a thing In addition to her new vegetarian routine, Carrie Underwood is keeping her body healthy during pregnancy by keeping up with her fitness. She routinely does cardio in the form of treadmill workouts and kickboxing, also incorporating strength training into her day. “My favorite thing is cardio,” she said. “Cardio makes me feel good, it makes me happy.”

The post Carrie Underwood’s vegetarian and vegan pregnancy plan appeared first on Voxxi.
