Senator Marco Rubio is taking steps toward the 2016 candidacy for president by contracting a campaign finance director and by executing a mock campaign run through key states for early voting. Univision News reported that a source close to Rubio’s campaign revealed that he ordered his team to operate as if he were throwing his hat into the ring. Rubio reportedly hired Anna Rogers as his campaign finance director, who will be in charge of raising $50 million or more in order for him to participate in the Republican primaries. SEE ALSO: Marco Rubio slams Florida gay marriage ruling Rogers is the current director of finance for American Crossroads, a conservative Super PAC (Political Action Committee) started by Karl Rove, which has managed to raise more than $200 million in previous elections to support Republican candidates. She’s expected to start working for Marco Rubio’s camp on February 1st, but already the Republican Senator from Florida, has recruited two big Republican campaign donors aboard: George Seay, CEO of Annadale; Jim Rubrich, of RockTenn. Marco Rubio starts fundraising for a 2016 presidential run “Though he’s not expected to make his bid official for several weeks, Rubio is getting an early start on fundraising for his Super PAC. The senator is planning a swing through California to raise money, with stops in Beverly Hills, Newport Beach, and Rancho Sante Fe. He’ll also visit Texas and Chicago,” CBS News reported. Possible contenders for the Republican nomination, include Florida’s own former governor Jeb Bush, as well as Rand Paul of, and Senator Ted Cruz, of Texas. SEE ALSO: Marco Rubio’s comments on a 2016 campaign run sound very convincing None of these candidates have confirmed they will seek the candidacy, even though Jeb Bush has already created the “Right to Rise PAC” in anticipation of a possible campaign run. The senator of Cuban descent, is a strong conservative who has endeared himself to the Tea Party in the past, even though his stance on immigration and immigration reform has swung from extreme-right to moderate.

The post A Marco Rubio 2016 presidential run appears closer to reality appeared first on Voxxi.

The 114th Congress that convenes Tuesday will feature five new Latinos, bringing the total number of Latinos serving in both chambers of Congress to a record of 32, up one from last year. That number includes the current three Latino U.S. senators who were not up re-election last year. However, it does not include Democrats Joe Garcia of Florida and Pete Gallego of Texas, both of whom will not return to Congress after losing their re-election bids in November. SEE ALSO: A record number of Latinos will serve in the U.S. House Here’s a look at the new Latino members of Congress who will be sworn in on Tuesday: Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) Gallego is a Harvard graduate and Iraq War veteran. He served four years in the Arizona House of Representatives, where he became assistant minority leader. The former Marine will fill the seat vacated by retiring Democratic Rep. Ed Pastor in Arizona’s 7th congressional district. Gallego is the son of Latino parents—his mother is Colombian and his father is Mexican. Income inequality, education, immigration reform and the environment are among the issues he plans to advocate for in Congress. Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) Aguilar made history in 2006 when he became the youngest person to serve on the Redlands City Council. Four years later, his fellow council members elected him to be mayor. Last November, Aguilar made history again by winning and returning California’s 31st congressional district seat to the Democrats. He will replace retiring GOP Rep. Gary Miller. Aguilar comes from a working class family. In Congress, he plans to fight for job creation and to ensure everyone has the same opportunities to join the middle class. Rep. Norma Torres (D-Calif.) Torres is a former 911 emergency dispatcher who began her political career as a member of the Pomona City Council. She went on to serve as mayor and as a California state assemblywoman. In November, she was elected to represent California’s 35th congressional district vacated by Rep. Gloria Negrete McLeod. Torres was born in Guatemala and has been living in the U.S. since she was 5 years old. Among the issues she has pushed for include legal aid for unaccompanied minors crossing the border, the hiring of bilingual dispatchers and preventing families from losing their home to foreclosure. Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.) Curbelo served as a Miami-Dade County School Board member before announcing his bid for Congress. He defeated Rep. Joe Garcia in a highly competitive race for Florida’s 26th congressional district last November. Like Garcia, Curbelo is the son of Cuban exiles who fled Cuba during Fidel Castro’s rule. But they don’t see eye-to-eye when it comes to U.S.-Cuba policy. Curbelo doesn’t support President Obamas move to restore relations with Cuba and has vowed to hold the president and his administration accountable for “this reckless conduct.” Rep. Alex Mooney (R-W.V.) Mooney, whose mother is from Cuba, is West Virginia’s first Latino U.S. representatives. He will represent West Virginia’s 2nd congressional district. Throughout the campaign trail, he was accused of moving to West Virginia from Maryland to run for Congress. In Maryland, he served as a state senator for 12 years and as chairman of Maryland’s Republican Party for three years. Mooney said that in Congress he wants to push for job creation as well as fight for “conservative values” and “defend” West Virginia from Obama’s “disastrous policies.” SEE ALSO: Can the GOP part with America’s ugly past and present?

The post The 114th Congress features five new Latinos appeared first on Voxxi.

After former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush announced on Tuesday that he is “exploring” a 2016 presidential run, eyes are now on another Republican presidential contender from Florida – Marco Rubio. The 43-year-old senator was considered to be a frontrunner for the 2016 Republican presidential candidacy, but the tides seem to have changed now that Bush has formally declared that he will consider campaigning. Bush and Rubio live mere miles apart, with Bush in Coral Gables and Rubio in Miami, and Rubio even considers the former governor a mentor and a “friend”. SEE ALSO: Marco Rubio and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen banned from Nicaragua This may complicate matters for Rubio, as both he and Bush share many of the same supporters and financial backers. Competing with his mentor may not deter Rubio from running, however. “Marco has a lot of respect for Governor Bush, and believes that he would be a formidable candidate,” Alex Constant, Rubio’s spokesman, said in a statement after Bush’s announcement Tuesday. “However, Marco’s decision on whether to run for President or re-election will be based on where he can best achieve his agenda to restore the American Dream – not on who else might be running.” According to The Miami Herald, if Bush and Rubio were to run against each other today, Bush would come out as the clear winner. Recent polls of Florida voters have shown that Bush would pull 34 percent of the GOP votes, while Rubio would only pull 10 percent. While Rubio has strong support among Florida Republicans, it seems like more voters would choose the more experienced 61-year-old former governor to vie for the presidency. Both Bush and Rubio are deemed desirable candidates for many Republican voting groups in Florida, in particular the South Florida Cuban Americans. SEE ALSO: Are Americans ready for another President Bush? “Marco is literally one of our own, and Jeb has been adopted as one of our own,” said Mauricio Claver-Carone, the U.S.-Cuba Democracy PAC’s executive director in Washington. “Our community holds them equally in high regard. We couldn’t lose either way.” Rubio has yet to confirm whether or not he will run for presidency, even though the dynamics of the race have shifted since Bush’s announcement. The Republican Party feels that Bush, who has presidential blood in his veins (he is the son of former President George H. W. Bush and the brother of George W. Bush), is one of the strongest presidential candidates because of his ability to reach out to the Hispanic population. Bush’s wife, Columba, is a native of Mexico and he is fluent in Spanish. Many Republicans believe that he may be the GOP’s best shot at appealing to the nation’s growing Hispanic population, which currently makes up 11 percent of all eligible voters and trends strongly Democratic.

The post Will Marco Rubio run in 2016 after Bush’s announcement? appeared first on Voxxi.

OPINION The word from Republican circles is that Jeb Bush the former governor of Florida is getting ready to announce his candidacy for the 2016 presidential race. According to the Washington Post’s article on December 13th, Jeb Bush sent an email to potential donors to “keep their powder dry,” while he prepares to announce his candidacy. Certainly, there are many Republicans lining up to throw their hat in the ring, but of all of them, the Bush name is better known among voters. SEE ALSO: Jeb Bush to GOP: Don’t use border crisis to delay immigration reform Having said that, does a better-known name make for a presidential win and if so, should it? The presidential race for 2016 will be an interesting one with so many known and unknown candidates vying for the highest office in the land. Certainly, if Jeb Bush does decide to run, his likely opponent on the Democratic ticket may vey well be another known name, Hillary Clinton – needless to say it would be an interesting presidential race between another Bush and another Clinton. Jeb can give Hillary Clinton or any other Democratic nominee a run for their money, since his popularity goes well beyond the typical Republican Party voter. His popularity among many Democrats and particularly Hispanics is a well-known fact and his ability to capture independent voters is much more likely than it would be for his more conservative counterparts. So all in all, Jeb Bush, a member of the Republican Party can be elected president in 2016. However, is that a good thing for America or does our country deserves “new blood.” The fervor for such is already out there– President Obama recently made a statement that voters will want “that new car smell,” in our next president and Jeb Bush’s mother Barbara stated that other families ought to run besides the Bushes and Clintons. Even though there has been a two term presidential break from the Bush and Clinton families, their names continue to dominate the political scene in a way that no other political families except perhaps the Kennedys and Tafts, have been able to do. A presidential run is not an easy decision to make nor is being president of the United States, is something to play with. And in this very challenging time that our country now faces it is doubly difficult; e.g., we are no longer the number one economy in the world, the national debt is at an all time high, our military might is diminished and there are more people on food stamps and other federal assistance programs since record keeping started in our government. And despite having elected a president of color not once but twice, relations between the races are not better. The next president has to come in prepared to change things for the better and have a team in place that will help not hinder his or her ability to lead and get our economy started in the right direction. Jeb Bush is not only a candidate unique from others but he has also been responsible for actually “running something” which is almost mandatory for our next leader. As governor of Florida, Bush was elected twice during which time he made significant economic strides for the state. No doubt, his qualifications to run this country are “what the doctor ordered” but at the same time is he the best qualified in the Republican Party to run in 2016? SEE ALSO: Jeb Bush takes a shot at Hillary Clinton in Colorado There are other Republican governors with impeccable credentials that are potential candidates such as Chris Christie. But according to some political pundits from the right, if Bush decides to run, will likely be the nominee because he has the donor list, big party support, and most importantly, his name is well known and therein lies the problem for him. There are many voters that want “the new car smell” just as the president suggested. The retreads of yesteryear are just that, “same old same old” or as others say, “they are yesterday’s news.” Whatever the remarks, American voters want a candidate that can improve the economy pure and simple; all other issues fall behind. It’s only hopeful that the Republican Party will nominate a candidate that can deliver on this demand and not a candidate that carries a popular name. If Jeb Bush can tell us why he wants to be President without reference to his father or brother, then he may actually be able to have that “new car smell” the voters are slowly beginning to demand.

The post Are Americans ready for another President Bush? appeared first on Voxxi.
