When the Argentine is inspired and decides to show up, the team can play like the angels. When he is moping around the field, disconnected, and not giving his all in every play, his team can suffer tremendously, and fail to reach the appropriate competitive level. Against Atletico Madrid, Barça fans got to enjoy perhaps the best game Messi has played against a big team since the quarterfinal bout with PSG two years ago. That day, in the first leg of the series, Messi got injured and was subbed out at half time. He came back for 20 minutes in the return match, enough to tie the game and go through to the semifinals, but since then, the Four-time Ballon d’Or winner has been nothing but a ghostly image of himself. The last week at Camp Nou saw the most turmoil within the club in recent history. President Josep Maria Bartomeu fired Football Director Andoni Zubizarreta, Carles Puyol left the club after six months as Zubizarreta’s right hand man, and finally the President called for anticipated elections to be held next June.   Amidst the issues off the field, the recent defeat against Real Sociedad also made Luis Enrique inch closer to the cliff, as the team had lost a golden opportunity to creep up to the top of the table and surpass Real Madrid while at it. News that Messi had actively been lobbying for Luis Enrique to be sacked also didn’t help the situation, and the fact that the Argentine missed the post-Anoeta debacle training, allegedly because of a stomach bug, further proved that things between the coach and his main star were far from a fairy tale. But one great match, 90 minutes of successful football against an important enough opponent, can change everything, and that’s exactly what happened against Diego Siemone’s Atletico. SEE ALSO: Five soccer players to keep an eye on in 2015 Barcelona beat the team that took La Liga title last year from Camp Nou in the last game of the season, and did so in style. Luis Enrique’s men put on a show like they hadn’t done in a long time, and it was all based in Lionel Messi’s stellar performance. The Argentine broke through all the noise around him and focused solely on the game. He recorded an assist and a goal, but more importantly, he showed the kind of leadership every good Blaugrana fan expects to see from him. There’s no saying if this version of Messi is finally here to stay, but if it is, Spanish and European rivals should be quite weary of Barcelona. The best Messi, teamed up with an ever-growing Neymar and finally-adjusted Luis Suarez make up a deadly combination ready to battle anyone in the continent.

FC Barcelona imploded a day after losing to Real Sociedad, and there may still be some surprises in the horizon. The team didn’t do its part in Anoeta, in the first game of the year, and after losing 1-0 to David Moyes’ men, the events have been unraveling in the following 24 hours until chaos has ensued in the Catalan club. Football director Andoni Zubizarreta has been fired, being finally and openly held responsible for the poor planning of the first team’s squad, the bad performances of some of the signings this past summer and ultimately the ban which FIFA has imposed on the club due to irregularities on the signings of players under 18 years of age in the last four years. While it was public knowledge that the former goalkeeper would eventually be blamed for all these issues surrounding the club, it was his statements on TV after the defeat in Anoeta that accelerated the whole situation and ended up with Zubizarreta fired and his right hand, Carles Puyol, quitting from his post. Zubizarreta admitted to his part of the fault in the whole ordeal with FIFA, but also said that in the years the signing of the seven young players in question took place, now club President, Josep Maria Bartomeu, was the VP of Sports, his direct manager, and obviously also responsible for the decisions taken with regards to those signings. The Board of directors saw this as a direct attack from Zubizarreta and unilaterally decided to rescind his contract, putting an end to the agonizing situation the football director had been living in the last few months. Aside from the decisions that brought forth FIFA’s ban –ratified by TAS in December and by which Barça will not be able to sign any players until the 2016 Winter Market window–, Zubizarreta is also held responsible for the mistakes the club has made in signing players since 2010, and for letting go some talented footballers who were supposed to be strategic to the team’s future. On the one hand, the arrivals of Vermaelen –who still has not suited up for Barcelona having been signed injured from Arsenal–, Mathieu –deemed too expensive after arriving for a 20 million euro transfer from Valencia, and already in his 30s–, and Douglas –a player no one really understands how he could be playing for Barça– have haunted Zubizarreta’s reputation since the summer. His biggest mistake was to let go of players like Valdes –did not renew his contract–, Thiago –sold for 24 million to Bayern Munich after the Germans exercised an overseen clause in his contract–, or Cesc –at 27 years old who was supposed to be Xavi’s replacement and who now leads Mourinho’s Chelsea in England–, who fans and pundits deemed still necessary for the club. With Puyol also handing in his resignation –he was Bartomeu’s first option to take over from Zubizarreta–, and Luis Enrique being questioned by everyone in Spain, Lionel Messi also decided to add his two cents to the craziest day the club has seen since Sandro Rosell quit last year. Tension between Messi and Luis Enrique is hurting Barcelona The Argentine did not show up to practice, allegedly due to stomach issues –something he has alluded to in the past whenever he has decided to forego his responsibility to practice with the rest of the squad–, following what the Catalan press have defined as “a very heated discussion with Luis Enrique” in Anoeta. The head coach gave Messi, and Neymar and Alves, an extra day of vacation seeing as the three were traveling to South America for Christmas, but then he didn’t start any of the three against Real Sociedad. Messi was subbed in at half-time, and eventually Neymar and Alves came into the match too, but neither of the Brazilians nor the Argentine were able to turn around the 1-0 Moyes’ men had achieved 90 seconds into the match. SEE ALSO: Real Madrid invincible no more Luis Enrique and Messi had already been said to have quite different points of view in many aspects, and their relationship was respectful, at best, but perhaps not even cordial. After the episode in San Sebastian, Catalan tabloids have reported a full breakdown of communication between the two, which may push Bartomeu to have to decide between one or the other for next season. That is to say if Bartomeu himself remains in the club next season. Shielded by the governing laws of FC Barcelona, the President decided to remain in his post and not call for elections last year when he took over from Sandro Rosell, a very unpopular measure amongst fans who wanted to have a say on who would rule the club moving forward. Bartomeu was keen to remain as the head of the club until 2016, and then expose his candidacy to remain as president during the election period, but after the latest turn of events, he may have to push up the elections calendar and may even decide to not make a run for it himself. Many things are up in the air in Barcelona, and unless everything calms down soon enough, the team could experience their second year in a row without major trophies.

Granted, he did score against Valencia, although his legal netting was wrongfully disallowed, but the Uruguayan’s overall performances with his new club are still quite far from those he put out last year at Liverpool or during the World Cup with his National Team. There is no doubt Suarez is a top notch goal scorer. His Golden Boot from last season, when he scored 31 goals despite missing the first two months of the competition due to suspension, is just a small proof of his talents when facing the opposing goal. But most impressive was the way he manned Uruguay’s attack in Brazil, during the World Cup.   SEE ALSO: Jose Gimenez takes Europe by storm A team that was built to keep their goal intact rather than break past their rivals’ defensive system, found in Suarez the hero they had been looking for; the man who could win a game by creating and finalizing his own scoring opportunities. After such convincing credentials, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that teaming up the former Liverpool star with Neymar and Messi would make Barcelona the ultimate, and unstoppable, attacking machine. Unfortunately, things haven’t panned out quite as planned though. Since he signed for the Blaugranas, Suarez has spent three months banned, and one a half competing with his new team. In that time, he has only managed to score two goals: In the Champions League, against APOEL Nicosia and Paris Saint Germain.   But the lack of goals, at this stage, is not the worst issue for Suarez. The attacker simply seems out of place in his new club. Luis Enrique has not yet found a starting eleven he can trust, he has in fact used 23 different lineups in the 23 matches his team has played so far this season, and while Luis Suarez has been a prominent part of the team since his ban was lifted on October 26th, the instability in the team hasn’t helped him find his sweet spot within the coach’s plans. There are many critical voices who actually think Suarez is simply not a good fit for the team. These biased opinions speak of the need of the Uruguayan to play as a lone striker to be as effective as possible, and in Barcelona, the center forward role is reserved for Lionel Messi. However, these opinions do not take into account that Luis Suarez played –and won– the 2011 Copa America as a winger, alongside Diego Forlan and Edinson Cavani, in the Uruguayan National Team. SEE ALSO: Cristiano Ronaldo – Lionel Messi: The competition that never ends While there is some truth to the fact that even geniuses like Neymar, Messi and Suarez need adjustment time to find their perfect footing together, seeing as how the Brazilian and the Argentine are performing at a very high level, it would be safe to assume that Luis would be playing a much more important role in the squad by now, but his lack of connectivity is starting to worry the Board and the management staff. Signing Luis Suarez for 80 million was obviously a long term bet for Barcelona, so there is no real rush to make him start reeling in the goals, but at the same time, the longer he goes without breaking the spell in La Liga, the tougher critics will come down on him, which could become a true threat to his self-esteem. The Uruguayan is still on track to have a great first season as a blaugrana, but he’ll have to get on the scoreboard a lot more if he wants to make an impact. Because of that, Neymar and Messi, of course, will play a key role in Suarez’s adaptation to FC Barcelona.
