I don’t know about you but I was disappointed by the quality of the Super Bowl XLIX commercials. As a non-football fan, I still look forward to the Super Bowl all year thanks to the scrumptious food and hilarious commercials. SEE ALSO: The Internet targets Katy Perry’s Super Bowl halftime show I wasn’t let down by the food, but Super Bowl commercials are supposed to be funny and many advertisements were missing that usual spot of hilarity we apparently have been taking for granted. Insurance giant Nationwide went for the opposite end of the spectrum and created a scary, depressing commercial geared only towards putting more worries into parents’ minds about household accidents. But let’s try to forget about the negative here and instead focus on the rare gems of humor sporadically scattered throughout the game between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. And at least there wasn’t anything horribly sexist or inappropriate. Super Bowl commercials try fixing their image The NFL’s image has suffered since its players have been involved in domestic abuse scandals; so they felt safer featuring ads with babies and puppies rather than bikini-clad babes. Overall, they succeeded in creating a welcoming message for families, from Katy Perry’s dancing sharks and beach balls to a cute puppy being saved by mystical horses. 1. Budweiser ad Budweiser takes the cake for the cutest puppy commercial. I’ve watched it maybe a dozen times and still can’t help an “aww” escaping me at the end when a little puppy covered in mud is running down a path leading a giant group of horses (his best friends) that seem to have arisen from a fairy tale. It was strangely reminiscent of Homeward Bound and was set to a slowed down version of the Proclaimers‘ “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” so it was certainly one that tugged at our heartstrings. 2. Esurance Esurance seemed to be on a celebrity rampage because their two commercials included Lindsay Lohan and Walter White. Lohan’s commercial took a stab at her DUI charge, while at the same teaching children to never climb in cars with stranger. White’s commercial casted him as a substitute pharmacist. “You’re not Greg,” a suspicious customer asks. “We both have a lot of experience with drugs,” White retorts. “Excuse me, pharmaceuticals.” 3. T-Mobile T-Mobile featured a commercial with Sarah Silverman and Chelsea Handler talking to each other on the phone and bragging about how they can call from anywhere in their mansions using Wi-Fi calling including a underground delivery room where Silverman informs a mother “sorry it’s a boy”, a hydroponic kale garden and a subterranean petting zoo. 4. BMW The new BMW looks pretty nice and the commercial only did it justice. Former “Today” show hosts Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel let BMW play a hilarious and embarrassing footage from real Today show footage from 1994 where Couric and Gumbel talk about the mysterious Internet and try to work their heads around the @ symbol and email. “Do you write to it like mail?” Gumbel asks, while Couric suggests that @ is short for “around or about.” 5. Snickers Snickers contributed to the lineup with yet another “you’re not yourself when you’re hungry” commercial. While one would think that idea is a bit overplayed, they managed to bring some wit into it by setting it in the world of The Brady Bunch, casting Danny Trejo as the hungry version of Marsha Brady while Steve Buscemi was the upset Jan Brady, who exclaimed the classic “Marsha! Marsha! Marsha!” SEE ALSO: The Patriots are Super Bowl XLIX champions!

The post Top 5 Best Super Bowl Commercials 2015 appeared first on Voxxi.

Last time Disney tried to unveil a Latina princess, it didn’t turn out so well. The outrage was that the alleged first Hispanic princess was too white and didn’t look like most other Hispanics. The criticized the lack of diversity already among the pantheon on princesses. SEE ALSO: Meet the venturous and colorful flock of ‘Rio 2' This is Sofia The First: There was a lot of confusion about whether “Sofia the First” was the first Hispanic princess; however, Disney’s producer Jamie Mitchell, said that he misspoke. Mitchell also said that “Disney Junior has an exciting project in early development that does have a Latina as the heroine of the show.” Those early developments have now grown into a full fledged character with a name and a picture. Now, meet Elena of Avalor, Disney’s real first Latina princess. According to Buzzfeed, here’s some of the things that we know about her: She’s 16 She comes from the Kingdom of Avalor She is, according to Disney, “inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore” She’ll be introduced in a special episode of the Disney Junior series “Sofia the First” in 2016 She’ll have her own series, “Elena of Avalor,” also kicking off in 2016 She battled an evil sorceress named Shuriki She has a little sister, Princess Isabel, her grandfather Tito and her grandmother Cici In trying to save her family from Shuriki, she was pulled into her own magical amulet. You know, princess stuff Princess Sofia, who now wears the amulet, restores Elena to her human form and helps her return to Avalor Elena’s best friends are Mateo, who is training to be a wizard, and Skylar, a flying creature. Some people had reactions, criticizing the ambiguity of her ethnicity and questioning why her origins were in a made up land instead of an actual nationality. I guess it's cool that Disney is making a Latina princess but it's weird they're making up a place instead of choosing a nationality — fatty ding dong (@katrevalo) January 29, 2015 So Disney is finally debuting a Latina princess. But she's not getting her own movie she is guest appearing on a tv show. I call bullshit — christian torres (@CTpunk) January 29, 2015 #DisneyLatina? I mean, I guess. Just another way #Disney can capitalize/commodify our culture. I won't be watching. Thank you, though. — Máximo (@blurbsmithblots) January 30, 2015 Nina Terrero an Entertainment Weekly reporter even had her fun with the announcement I'd also love to learn if any Latinos helped design Disney's first Hispanic princess and if any will be involved in the series production — Nina Terrero (@Nina_Terrero) January 29, 2015 I'm also frustrated that Disney's Latina Princess is set in some bygones era. That means our Latina princess won't go to college. Go figure — Nina Terrero (@Nina_Terrero) January 29, 2015 Maybe Disney's Latina Princess will meet her Prince at church. He'll be either Catholic or Pentecostal …right? — Nina Terrero (@Nina_Terrero) January 29, 2015 Elena will be voiced by ABC Family’s Young & Hungry actress Aimee Carrero. SEE ALSO: Voyage with the cast of ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2' Disney has yet to confirm Elena as the first Latina princess, but rather described her as “inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore.” The blog post doesn’t even specify ethnicity in the title just say “Disney’s newest princess;” however, there are significant hints that point to a SI, she’s Latina alright!

The post Elena of Avalor crowned Disney’s first-ever Latina princess appeared first on Voxxi.

It’s a beloved box office hit in Mexico and Germany since its release in August 2014, and now “Buen Dia, Ramon” (Good Day, Ramon) is hitting theaters in the United States with the hopes to grasp just as much love. Directed by Jorge Ramirez-Suarez and starring Kristyan Ferrer, Ingeborg Schoner and Adrianna Barazza, the film tells the compelling and moving story of a young Mexican who migrates to Germany to find a better life. SEE ALSO: George Lopez’s dramatic movie role shines in ‘Spare Parts’ Ramon (Kristyan Ferrer) travels to the European country to find work with the intention to support his mother and grandmother Esperanza (Adrianna Barazza) back home. Lost in translation, the young man finds himself stranded in the freezing weather without shelter or money. In the midst of frustration and loneliness, Ramon comes across a sweet, senior citizen native called Ruth (Ingeborg Schoner) with whom he develops touching friendship that transcends borders and prejudices. Without ruining the touching movie for you, here’s what actors Kristyan Ferrer and Adrianna Barazza told VOXXI about the heart-warming film making it’s U.S. debut on January 30th. VOXXI (V): How did you prepare for your roles? ADRIANNA (A): I always read over the script and then investigated to see how people, similar to my character, are in real life. KRISTYAN (K): I was told not to learn German and to step away from the culture, that way my character would be more believable. It was an interesting challenge. V: What message does “Buen Dia, Ramon” deliver to the world? A: It’s very obvious that the movie talks about friendship and how nice human beings can be to one another. In the movie, Ruth did a lot for Ramon and vice-versa. V: What was your favorite scene in the entire movie? K: The scene that frustrated me the most was the dinner scene, but at the same time, it’s the scene of the whole movie. I’m talking to Ruth in Spanish and she’s talking to me in German, and it’s one of the scenes I most remember. (But despite this frustration it ended up being.) V: What are your expectations with the U.S. debut? K: The movie is about the universal language, and I believe a lot of people can identify with it. It’s a nice movie and overall, it was made with a lot of love for the people. A: That it has the same feedback as in Mexico, it was extraordinary. Especially because it’s in a country where a lot of undocumented immigrants live. We hope to meet all the expectations and that North America receives it well. SEE ALSO: Another great year for Mexican directors at the Oscars In the end, the culture shock was a wonderful experience for Ferrer, who said no one in the cast had an idea of how the movie will turn out, but in the end, they all ended up being great friends.

The post ‘Buen Dia, Ramon’ movie will restore your faith in humanity appeared first on Voxxi.

Eva Longoria traveled to the slums of Cartagena, Colombia in order to investigate teen pregnancy as a part of the PBS documentary “A Path Appears.” She will be starting this new stage in her life on February 2nd as audiences across America will tune in to follow her story. The documentary film was originally a compelling book, invented by the same best-selling authors and creators of “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.” In the book A Path Appears, Pulitzer Prize winners Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn provide a unique and essential narrative about making a difference in the world — and a roadmap to becoming a conscientious global citizen. The PBS documentary series examines the struggles women face in the United States and abroad, and the inspiring individuals working with them to create effective solutions. SEE ALSO: Find out what Eva Longoria is doing in Colombia Longoria along with Malin Akerman, Mia Farrow, Ronan Farrow, Jennifer Garner, Regina Hall, Ashley Judd, Blake Lively and Alfre Woodard will travel to Haiti, Kenya, Colombia and across the U.S. to explore the effects of gender inequality and poverty. They will also meet with local activists in the respective cities and countries. “Being in the slums and walking from barrio to barrio, you can’t walk two steps without seeing a pregnant teen,” Longoria said to the Hollywood Reporter. “I didn’t know there were so many pregnant teens here in Colombia,” Longoria says to a local Colombian teen in the clip. “I definitely don’t think [the pregnant teens] are aware that there’s a life outside of the bubble they live in, which is poverty. They don’t believe that they could go study.” The documentary was produced by Maro Chermayeff, Jeff Dupre, Jamie Gordon, and Mira Chang. Chermayeff also directed and Joshua Bennett served as the series producer. SEE ALSO: Eva Longoria directs film about the ‘Little Mariachi’ “What I love about documentaries is it humanizes issues. When you put a face to the problem, now all of a sudden you’re invested. You’re invested in this person’s story and their life’s journey,” the Latina actress said. The three-part series will air for three consecutive Mondays — Jan. 26, Feb. 2 and Feb. 9 — from 7-8:30 p.m. PT/10-11:30 p.m. ET on PBS.

The post Eva Longoria travels to Colombia for documentary on teen pregnancy appeared first on Voxxi.

Could it be? Chris Pratt, the goofy lovable dork we all know as Andy from “Parks and Recreation” and most recently, the majestic and famous Star Lord from “Guardians of the Galaxy” and the voice of Emmet in the new “Lego Movie” may be taking on another large role in “Indiana Jones.” The trailer for the new Jurassic Park movie also stars the adorable hunk in movie scheduled to open in theaters June 2015. SEE ALSO: Will Bill Murray jump on board the all-female ‘Ghostbusters’ flick? Pratt’s fame is likely due to the fact that “Parks and Recreation” has suddenly become the best show on television and “Guardians of the Galaxy” was an unmitigated success with the film netting an estimated $94 million at the US box office its opening weekend, making it the biggest August opening of all time and the third biggest opening of 2014. Not to mention the “Lego Movie” was yet another top grossing movie of the year so Pratt certainly didn’t have any trouble getting to the top of most casting lists. Director James Gunn took to Facebook earlier today to express: The Guardians are a group of oddballs, outcasts, and geeks. The movie is for anyone who ever felt cast aside, left out, or different. It’s for all of us who don’t belong. This movie belongs to you. And, today, I think we’re doing okay. Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones role has been up in the air for quite some time but until recently, Bradley Cooper was the talk of the town for that part. Now, Deadline is reporting that Disney may have moved on to his “Guardians of the Galaxy” co-star. Disney needed no more convincing that Pratt could handle this role but just to add to the long list of Pratt qualifications for this specific role, the nostalgia-heavy scenes in Guardians remind us of Ford back in his days as Jones. SEE ALSO: ‘Fantastic Four’ teaser trailer released Some ask if he is suitable for the role of Indiana Jones. While he may be a little too goofy for an archeology professor, his charisma and physical prowess certainly make up for it. Turns out Pratt has been cast as Jones for months now. So what will Pratt do now? His career skyrocketed within the blink of an eye and soon his most lovable role as Andy will come to an end as Parks and Recreation wrap up their memorable seven season run. Hopefully Pratt’s goofy comedy won’t end forever as well.

The post Behold the new ‘Indiana Jones’… Chris Pratt appeared first on Voxxi.

Following the news of all-female cast coming together, Sony has now slated its new “Ghostbusters” pic to be released on July 22, 2016. It was announced Wednesday morning that Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones would star in the new movie with Paul Feig writing and directing. Feig himself tweeted the release date on Tuesday, just a few hours after tweeting a picture of the cast. Ivan Reitman is producing the movie but no plot details are known at this time. SEE ALSO: ‘Fantastic Four’ teaser trailer released Though the new reboot is being described as an “all-female” take, there are in fact a few male roles. And surprise surprise, Paul Feig hopes Bill Murray will consider one of them. #Ghostbusters #Ghostbusters women All female cast for reboot – Time for the #women to sort out the paranormal mess! pic.twitter.com/GUlypFD1if — Joan (@Joan_RRXtension) January 28, 2015 If Feig actually manages to get Murray, that’d be huge. Murray’s lack of interest in returning has been a sticking point for previous incarnations of the film. For what it’s worth, though, Murray seems into the all-female Ghostbusters idea. Moreover, while Murray may be done with Venkman, he’d be playing an entirely different character if he joined Feig’s reboot. But that’s a big if. The site cautions that Ghostbusters is still in the early stages, meaning a lot could change between now and the (as yet unannounced) release date. Which might be a good thing, since they also comment on the “awkwardness” of Feig and Katie Dippold’s attempt to craft a new film on an old property. Almost as soon as the project was announced, many people (including Bill Murray) assumed Wiig and McCarthy were shoe-ins for the lead roles. Just a few weeks ago, reports circulated that the entire production schedule of the film, which is expected to shoot this summer, revolved around accommodating McCarthy’s packed schedule (which includes another Paul Feig-directed comedy, Spy, set to come out May 22). SEE ALSO: The psychological reasons Hispanic women see the most movies The addition of McKinnon and Jones is the real news here, as their donning of the proton packs ends speculation around many, many (many) other female stars, including Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone. McKinnon and Jones have been standout players on SNL, and the Wiig/McCarthy chemistry was one of the most memorable elements in Feig’s Bridemaids, so this should be fun.

The post Will Bill Murray jump on board the all-female ‘Ghostbusters’ flick? appeared first on Voxxi.

Marvel fans are on the edge of their seats—the teaser trailer for Josh Trank’s The Fantastic Four was released Tuesday, and it seems to already be proving the naysayers wrong. The latest reboot of The Fantastic Four has received scathing criticism for its choice of actors, and ScreenRant noted in August that the director, Josh Trank), was really the only aspect of the new film that hardcore comic book fans have approved of. SEE ALSO: Alejandro Iñarritu’s ‘Birdman’ gets SAG Award for Best Cast The cast features Miles Teller as Mister Fantastic, Kate Mara as Invisible Woman, Jamie Bell as The Thing, and Michael B. Jordan as the Human Torch. Despite the criticism (which isn’t surprising for a comic book superhero movie with an established fan base), the new teaser trailer already has Marvel fans itching with anticipation for the film’s August release date. Dr. Franklin Storm (Reg E. Cathey) delivers a grave voiceover monologue in the trailer as fans get their first peek at the new Fantastic Four characters. “But with every new discovery, there is risk, there is sacrifice, and there are consequences,” Dr. Storm says, right before the trailer flies through snippets of action, including massive explosions and the Human Torch bursting into flame. SEE ALSO: Oscar Isaac takes leading role in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ In less than two minutes, The Fantastic Four has just proven that it might be the biggest blockbuster of summer 2015.

The cast of “Birdman” gave thanks Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu’s genius for creating the film that won them the Best Cast in a Motion Picture award at the 21st Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night. SEE ALSO: Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscar might come thanks to Alejandro Iñarritu Michael Keaton, Naomi Watts and Edward Norton were part of the last ensemble of stars to take the stage and receive the biggest award in this ceremony dedicated strictly to recognize performers of the big and small screen. Iñarritu, of Mexican descent, directed “Birdman” also know by its other title, “The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance.” It’s a story of an actor (Keaton), who is known for playing the role of an iconic superhero and the challenges he faces while trying to mount a Broadway show — one of the biggest challenges in this black comedy is his ego. “Alejandro, you’re a genius,” said Amy Ryan as she took to the microphone on stage. Keaton also had words of praise for Alejandro Iñarritu upon accepting the award: “This is for Alejandro, and the producers and all of you…. “Actors love this movie for showing the courage actors have to kind of go out there and lay it on the line.” It was clear they were happy to receive the award, but were it not Iñarritu’s vision, the project wouldn’t have been such a success. SEE ALSO: The brouhaha over the lack of diversity at the Oscars The movie was up against, “Boyhood,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “The Imitation Game” and “The Theory of Everything” for the category. ‘OITNB’ shows more Latino star power at the SAG Awards It’s true that they did save the best award for last, but that’s not to say that the other categories of the night weren’t important. You see, unlike the Oscars, you won’t be seeing a category such as best film at the SAG Awards. Instead, the focus is on the actors, and that’s where the stars of comedy “Orange is the New Black,” were able to shine, lending more Latino star power to the show in the realm of TV programs. It’s cast, which includes several Latinas, won the Best Ensemble.

Honoring the best achievements in film and television performances for the year 2014, the 21st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) has 77 nominees in the fight for an accolade at this year’s ceremony. SEE ALSO: The brouhaha over the lack of diversity in the Oscars Among the reputed shows and movies in the mix is Alejandro G. Iñarritu‘s film “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” with four nominations: Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role – Michael Keaton Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role – Edward Norton Outstanding Performance by a Female Actress in a Supporting Role – Emma Stone The 2014 dark comedy flick has garnered the Mexican director a Golden Globe and nine nominations at the upcoming Oscars, becoming the leading film with most nods next to “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” Other favorites in the SAG film category include “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Boyhood,” “The Imitation Game” and “The Theory of Everything.” The television category also has promising nominations including “Modern Family” for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. The funny show, which features Sofia Vergara as the witty Gloria, is up for the title against shows “Big Bang Theory,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Orange is the New Black” and “Veep.” If “Modern Family wins, it will be the show’s fifth consecutive win at the SAG Awards. But the star-studded event is not all about the winners or losers, it’s also about the glitz and glam of the red carpet and who will be presenting. This year’s event will count with the participation of Jared Leto, Jeff Goldblum, Reese Witherspoon and our very own starlet of Mexican descent, Lupita Nyong’o, among other stars. SEE ALSO: Another great year for Mexican directors at the Oscars Receiving the Lifetime Achievement honor is actress, singer and dancer Debbie Reynolds.

Following the success of his nine-time Oscar nominated film “Birdman,” Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu is off to another venture starring Leonardo DiCaprio. An exclusive released by Entertainment Weekly revealed the first look of DiCaprio in Iñarritu’s upcoming film “The Revenant.” SEE ALSO: Another great year for Mexican directors at the Oscars Based on a true story of the 19th century, the American western thriller depicts the life of Hugh Glass (DiCaprio), a fur trapper who is mauled by a bear while hunting. His companions rob him and leave him to die, but he survives and sets out to get revenge on the men who betrayed him. “He’s a brave, incredible actor. I’m so surprised about how good he is,” Iñárritu told EW of DiCaprio. “I think there’s a profound understanding of humanity that I can see through his eyes.” Joining Iñarritu and DiCaprio in this journey are actors Tom Hardy, Will Poulter and Domhnall Gleeson. The cast is currently filming in Calgary, Canada, an experience that Iñarritu likes to describe as a “fun ride.” Get a first look at @LeoDiCaprio in Alejandro Inarritu's 'The Revenant': http://t.co/HrupaNdo3N pic.twitter.com/ASUVvwHuvZ — Entertainment Weekly (@EW) January 21, 2015 With “The Revenant,” the director continues to push the boundaries of filmmaking. “It’s a very experimental thing that we’re doing here…I’m now addicted to doing things that can fail horribly or maybe that can give us a surprise. We are all into it,” he said. Considering that his 2014 film “Birdman” won big at the Golden Globe and leads the Oscars nominations, we wonder if his 2015 flick will receive the same amount of love. SEE ALSO: Gina Rodriguez nabs Golden Globe for dreaming big If so, we really hope this would be the role to nab Leonardo DiCaprio, once and for all, his first Oscar win. “The Revenant” is scheduled to have a limited release in the U.S. on on December 25, 2015, followed by a wide release on January 8, 2016.

The post Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscar might come thanks to Alejandro Iñarritu appeared first on Voxxi.

Eva Longoria, former “Desperate Housewives” star, will be cast in NBC’s new soapy comedy, “Telenovela.” The network announced on Friday that it has ordered 13 episodes of a single-camera comedy where the 39-year-old actress will play the “willful but popular diva Ana Maria, star of Latin America’s most beloved telenovela, who strives to stay on top in a world where the drama on-camera is nothing compared to the drama off-camera,” according to NBC News. SEE ALSO: Eva Longoria directs inspirational film about “Little Mariachi” Longoria is perfect for the role because there are few other actresses that have the international appeal she does. Her character will be able to effectively navigate the crazy lifestyle that comes along with putting together a daily show. Not only will Longoria have her plate full with acting in the show but she will also be a producer on the project. At the TV critics press tour, NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt also touted “Shades of Blue,” a “dark cop show” starring Jennifer Lopez that will start production in June. Additionally, former “X-Files” star David Duchovny will play “an old-school” cop in “Aquarius,” a drama set in the 1960s when Duchovny’s character runs up against the notorious criminal Charles Manson. The network is also developing “Freedom Run,” an eight-hour miniseries about the Underground Railroad, originally based on Betty DeRamus’ book, “Forbidden Fruit: Love Stories From the Underground Railroad.” What is interesting to note is that Stevie Wonder is one of the project’s producers. SEE ALSO: We know what it’ll take for Thalia to return to telenovelas In addition, Dolly Parton has signed a development deal with the network for a series of movies based on the “songs, stories and inspiring life” of the country singer.

OPINION My childhood was spent dreaming about becoming a film actress. I surely thought that dream could come true if I took part in school plays, but that was not to be. The acting parts typically went to the Anglo students; we Mexicans were relegated to portraying trees, vegetables, animals, or serving as stagehands. However, by high school some of that discriminatory thinking began to change. I credit our high school drama teacher, Mr. von Rosenberg who started the change–so long as you delivered the part he didn’t care what color you were or what accent you carried. SEE ALSO: ‘Spare Parts’ film proves there are great roles for Latino actors, just not enough I still remember the day I auditioned for the role of Hippolyta in Midsummer’s Night Dream. This is was my one big chance to nail a major role and be on my way to Hollywood. But as much as Mr. Von Rosenberg tried to bring me along I couldn’t deliver the role of the Amazonian Queen Hippolyta. My dream of becoming an actress ended that day. I didn’t whine, didn’t blame anyone, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say it hurt to the loose the role. Since my life wasn’t going to be in films I became a movie buff; watching Roy Rogers and Gene Autry westerns after school and watching even more movies on weekends with my family. I can’t remember the first time I watched the “Academy Awards” (since 2013 there are known as the “Oscars”) on television but I haven’t missed a year since. Of course, as a Mexican I always wanted to see another Mexican appear in movies or even more importantly, win the much coveted, “Oscar.” But that hasn’t been the case. Although interestingly, the statue of the “Oscar” was designed based on the real life figure of the Mexican film director and actor, Emilio “El Indio” Fernandez. As it turned out, in 1928 MGM’s Art Director Cedar Gibbons was tasked with designing the Academy Awards statue and his future wife, Dolores Del Rio recommended her friend Emilio. So there you have it, a Mexican, is the image upon which the Oscar was designed. And that is where the influence of Latinos in Oscar life starts and ends. It’s no secret that minorities in this country haven’t been a part of the major “Hollywood” movie scene. Just as when I was a child, minorities have been traditionally relegated to playing minor roles that don’t fall in the category of “Oscar” nomination material. Admittedly, there is a growing influence in Hollywood among minorities especially from the African American community. During the past 20 years we’ve seen more and more African American actors and creators win Oscars. Yet, after the Oscar nominations were announced last week, we read screaming headlines about the lack of diversity among the list of actor nominees. The Rev. Al Sharpton got so worked up he called for an emergency meeting to discuss taking action against the academy awards’ power leaders. Which makes one wonder, when Sharpton has his meeting will he speaking “diversity” inclusive of which group or groups? Blacks? Hispanics? Native Americans? Asians? We know that none of these groups, except Blacks have any kind of footing in the Hollywood door so will Sharpton now become the leader in “all things Hollywood” for all groups left out of important movie roles, Golden Globe and Oscar nominations? In other words, what is his agenda that makes movie sense? We know that movies, unlike other careers in our society, are based on the story line of the day and in turn actors are chosen to play the roles accordingly. In turn, the actor that best outperforms his or her peers is recognized for their work. Nominations for best this and best that, shouldn’t be based on achieving a diverse quota but rather they should be based on the performance of the actor period. SEE ALSO: Another great year for Mexican directors at the Oscars We movie goers watch movies to be entertained but no doubt, many of us would be proud to see a member of our respective racial or ethnic community perform on any given day; however, if the story line doesn’t call for such we shouldn’t force the issue. Let’s stop whining about the list of nominations for movie awards and start demanding that more diverse actors and creators be HIRED in movies period. But like anything else these individuals must be able to demonstrate their talent. And I am not sure how Sharpton or anyone else can make that happen.

The post The brouhaha over the lack of diversity in the Oscars appeared first on Voxxi.

The Academy Award nominations have been announced, and there is one glaring consistency—the overwhelming lack of diversity amongst the nominees. Out of the 20 actors nominated in the four acting categories, every single one is white. David Oyelowo, the African American lead actor in “Selma,” was expected to receive a nomination, but he was snubbed in favor of five white actors, including Steve Carell for “Foxcatcher” and Michael Keaton for “Birdman.” There were also no Asian American, Native American, or Hispanic actors nominated. This begs the question: Where are the roles for minorities in film? SEE ALSO: ‘Spare Parts’ is a stepping stone in Carlos PenaVega’s career In 2013, Latinos accounted for 32 percent of the nation’s moviegoers, so it seems incongruous that there are so few roles for Latino actors in film and television. The highly anticipated film “Spare Parts” might just be the breath of fresh air that is needed to shake up the homogeneity of Hollywood. The film recounts the true story of four undocumented Mexican high school students who, against all odds, win a national robotics competition in an uplifting underdog story. “Spare Parts” features performances by George Lopez, Marisa Tomei, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Carlos Pena Vega. Lopez, the comedian who sparked surprise for tackling a serious role in the film, believes that this underdog story is simply one that needs to be told. “This is a movie that will stand the test of time,” he said. “And it will always be something that you’ll be able to show other people. And when someone says that you can’t, you can say ‘si se puede.’” “Spare Parts” was inspired by a story written by journalist Joshua Davis for Wired Magazine. Davis reported on the motivational true story, and before long the story made its way to Hollywood. The film premiered in Tempe, Arizona last Tuesday, and members of the Hispanic community have already praised it for bringing an important story about immigrants into the public eye. Jose Antonio Tijerino, President and CEO of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF), said in a press release, “’Spare Parts’ captures not just a compelling underdog story, but moreover the great potential that is often hiding in every corner of America.” SEE ALSO: Another great year for Mexican directors at the Oscars Lily Eskelsen Garcia, NEA President, said, “To see on the big screen people – four undocumented Latino students and their teacher – who don’t usually get the hero treatment is refreshing.” While audiences are responding positively to this inspirational story featuring Latino lead actors, others have been quick to point out that Latinos are still vastly underrepresented in pop culture. Gina Rodriguez, the breakout star of the CW sitcom “Jane the Virgin,” pointed out this flaw in Hollywood during her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes last Sunday. “This award is so much more than myself,” Rodriguez said. “It represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes.”

The post ‘Spare Parts’ film proves there are great roles for Latino actors, just not enough appeared first on Voxxi.

Fresh off the Golden Globes, where it garnered two wins out of its seven nods, “Birdman,” along with “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” lead the 87th Academy Award Nominations for the 2015 Oscars. It’s been a great year for Mexican film director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu and the release of his 2014 dark comedy film “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” starring Michael Keaton and Emma Stone. SEE ALSO: Gina Rodriguez nabs Golden Globe for dreaming big Much like Alfonso Cuaron’s success with “Gravity” at the 2014 Oscars, where it lead with 10 nods, Iñarritu’s flick leads this year’s awards show with nine nominations. Best Picture Best Actor in a Leading Role – Michael Keaton Best Actor in a Supporting Role – Edward Norton Best Actress in a Supporting Role – Emma Stone Best Cinematography – Emmanuel Best Directing – Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu Best Sound Editing Best Sound Mixing Best Writing – Original Screenplay Though we’re sure winning all nine would be of great achievement for the director and his team, what we’re highly rooting for is the win of Best Picture. “Birdman” is up for the title against “American Sniper,” “The Imitation Game,” “Selma,” “Boyhood,” “The Theory of Everything,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “Whiplash.” It would also be great if he garners the title for Best Director, becoming the second Mexicano to win the prestige honor at the Oscars. All eyes are already set on the Latino director after taking home two wins at the 2015 Golden Globes for Best Screenplay in a Motion Picture and Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical by Michael Keaton. And to think that Iñarritu –who directed drama films “Babel,” “21 Grams” and “Amores Perros”– doubted many times of this production. “I’m very happy and proud of sharing with these friends this profound and fun experience,” he said of his crew at the Golden Globe press room. “If you knew our work before, you’d never think this was a good idea…to make a comedy. We’re not funny guys, we laugh a lot about tragic things,” he added. Whatever the outcome, we’re pretty sure that “Birdman” won’t leave empty handed at this year’s movie event taking place on February 22nd.

Seeing George Lopez take on a serious movie role is quite the stunner –especially when he’s been known for being one of the funniest man in show biz. His new flick “Spare Parts,” however, will touch your heart and hit home for many Latinos in the U.S. “I knew the movie would not be done unless I played the teacher,” Lopez told VOXXI about his leading role as Fredi Cameron, a high school professor who serves as a mentor in a troubled school. “The story’s good. It’s very dramatic and very emotional.” SEE ALSO: ‘Spare Parts’ is a stepping stone in Carlos PenaVega’s career The film, out January 16, tells the heartfelt and inspirational story of four undocumented immigrants from Mexico who compete in an underwater robotics competition, beating all odds. It’s based on the true story of a group of high school students from Phoenix, Arizona, and was first reported in a Wired Magazine story by Joshua Davis. Lopez said he can relate to the plot perfectly fine: “I made no secret that I’ve had a pretty rough life. In a rough life you have to laugh, but also be able to cry. Sometimes it’s very difficult for Latinos.” Known for his stand-up comedy and hilarious shows, the Mexican actor said there were times when he would get sentimental on set. “The real guys came to the set and seeing their pictures always made me cry because it’s team work. There’s still a tremendous amount of respect between the young men and the teachers,” he said. George Lopez? Crying? It may sound silly, but once you take a look at the inspirational “Spare Parts,” you’d know exactly what he’s talking about. “All the movies that ever made me cry were made up… ‘Rocky,’ ‘Karate Kid,'” he said. “This one will make you cry because it’s based on true life.” SEE ALSO: Hollywood goes to Arizona for the ‘Spare Parts’ premiere When asked about the key to achieving not only the American Dream but all dreams, Lopez said: “Determination, intuition and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something.” As a matter of fact, the Latino actor put himself as an example. “You’re talking to a guy that came from nothing and Im doing all right.”

The post George Lopez’s dramatic movie role shines in ‘Spare Parts’ appeared first on Voxxi.

For Carlos PenaVega, forming part of the upcoming film “Spare Parts” is a stepping stone in his career. “This is huge for me,” he told VOXXI. “I’ve never done a movie where I was the lead like this and it’s a complete departure from Big Time Rush.” SEE ALSO: Hollywood goes to Arizona for the ‘Spare Parts’ premiere Prior to joining the cast which includes George Lopez and Jamie Lee Curtis, PenaVega was singing and dancing his days away as part of the Nickelodeon show and boy band “Big Time Rush.” Though Big Time Rush was part of his life for five years, those days are long gone. PenaVega, 26, has now ventured to film with his leading role of Oscar Vasquez in “Spare Parts.” The film, out January 16, tells the heartfelt and inspirational story of four undocumented immigrants from Mexico who compete in an underwater robotics competition, beating all odds. It’s based on the true story of a group of high school students from Phoenix, Arizona, and was first reported in a Wired Magazine story by Joshua Davis. “It’s [the movie] super serious. It has a great message and I really think people are going to see a new side of me. We’ll see what happens,” he said of his starring role. From the small screen to the big screen, PenaVega thought one of the most challenging things would be being away from home. But the fear vanished when his wife and actress Alexa PenaVega, was invited to form part of the cast as his movie girlfriend Karla. “The hardest part is waiting in the movie sets,” he eventually admitted. “It’s fun shooting, but then you have to sit there.” But despite his long hours on set, PenaVega learned a lot from his character and the movie. “Believe in yourself to get that extra push,” he said to VOXXI. “These kids did it over all the obstacles.” We bet that this won’t be the last of Carlos PenaVega; in fact, we have a gut-feeling that it’s only the beginning of a beaming career. Here are some facts of the new Latino in Hollywood. He was born in Columbia, Miss. and raised in Weston, Fla. His father is Spanish and Venezuelan descent His mother is of Dominican descent His first acting role was at age 10 on “ER” His first solo single is in Spanish and it’s called “Electrico” He was once a cheerleader He was also part of the 2007 MTV reality series “Making Menudo” His birth name is Carlos Pena Jr., he meshed his last name when he married his wife Alexa Vega –the couple now goes by Carlos and Alexa PenaVega SEE ALSO: Rosario Dawson talks ‘Top Five’

The post ‘Spare Parts’ is a stepping stone in Carlos PenaVega’s career appeared first on Voxxi.

Jennifer Lopez is one of the most desirable women in the world –no wonder her younger next door neighbor has got the hots for her. In her most recent production “The Boy Next Door,” J.Lo takes the leading role of high school teacher Claire Peterson. Much like in real person, Ms. Peterson is one gorgeous gal, who undeniably turns heads at all times. SEE ALSO: The 12 best looks from the Golden Globes red carpet Among her many admirers is her vecino and young stud Noah Sandborn, portrayed by the actor of Mexican descent Ryan Guzman. Here’s the gist of it, without ruining the entire flick for you: Shortly after her divorce, high school teacher Claire has a one-night stand with her sexy neighbor, who quickly develops a dangerous obsession with her. In her visit to Univision’s “Despierta America,” J.Lo stated that the psychological thriller, directed by Rob Cohen and written by Barbara Curry, was produced in 23 days with a micro-budget. However, the cast, which also includes Kristen Chenoweth and John Corbett, could not be any more ecstatic with the outcome. Perhaps you’re not a big fan of J.Lo’s acting, but word on the street is that the movie has one intense and steamy sex scene. A scene which Lopez herself said: “That was all me, no stunt double needed.” The Puerto Rican superstar has had her fair share of great flicks *cough* Selena *cough* and awful ones *cough* Gigli *cough*. We wonder how “The Boy Next Door” will do once it hits theaters nationwide on January 23rd.

Gina Rodriguez’s big win at the 72nd annual Golden Globe Awards was everything: her first nomination and her first win. We told you she was one to look out for. We were ecstatic to see how the CW’s “Jane the Virgin” and its two nods played out at the 2015 Golden Globes. SEE ALSO: ‘Jane the Virgin’ shows Latino power at People’s Choice Awards Though the TV show lost to “Transparent” for Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy, we were thrilled when its leading star Gina Rodriguez won for Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy, making the whole team proud! The category was filled with popular women in TV, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Lena Dunham (Girls) and Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black), but only one could take the title. Rodriguez was shocked upon hearing her name. An overwhelmed Gina stormed on stage mouthing “Wow, Wow, Wow,” before grabbing the Golden Globe she garnered for her starring role of Jane in the comedy “Jane the Virgin.” In the midst of tears of joy, the Puerto Rican starlet began her emotive speech: “Thank you God for making me an artist.” She went on to thank CBS, CW, her cast and crew, stating “I am nothing without you.” She also honored her loving parents and sisters who accompanied her to the ceremony: “Thank you to my mom and my dad for telling me ‘to dream big and never stop dreaming.’ To my siblings and my sisters for being biggest role models in my life.” The concept of the show, adapted from the Venezuelan series by the same name in Spanish, basically tells the travails of a young woman, a virgin, who accidentally becomes artificially inseminated at a doctor’s office. “This award is so much more than myself, it represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes,” she added with true Latino pride. “My father used to tell me to wake up each day and say ‘today’s a great day, I can and I will.’ Well, dad, today’s a great day, I can and I did,” she concluded while holding her globe up high. Following her successful and well-deserved win, Gina Rodriguez became a trending hit on Twitter, having many fans talking of her great acceptance speech. still crying over Gina Rodriguez's acceptance speech at the #GoldenGlobes — Adriana (@Adria6168) January 12, 2015 Gina Rodriguez's speech made me cry.

Eva Longoria is off to great and wonderful things in 2015. One of the tasks on her agenda is a film about the “Little Mariachi” –the kid who was once the center of controversy. While promoting her new project Versus for ESPN at the Television Critics Association this week, Longoria talked about her anticipated short film series that she’s executive producing for the sports channel. Despite his powerful presentation, the Mexican-American singer became a victim of racist tweets and online bullying for being Latino and performing in his mariachi suit. His inspirational story is now headed to the small screen thanks to Longoria. “I really wanted to tell that story because what came out of it was something beautiful and a really great lesson,” Eva told the Television Critics Association, reports Daily Mail. “We got into this little boy who plays soccer and was thrown into the center of this debate about immigration and what it’s about to be Mexican,” she added of the young star who is a Texas native like her. So many great flicks, talents and TV shows have garnered nods, but who will be the big winners of the night? SEE ALSO: Jane the Virgin is nominated for two Golden Globe Awards As we sit around and wait for Sunday night, we’re excited for seven highlights to spot at the upcoming awards show. 1) Jennifer Aniston Everyone is all talks about Jennifer Aniston’s starring role in the drama film “Cake.” Even the New York Times report that the 45-year-old actress has “something to prove” with her role in the movie. Will she manage to take home this year’s title for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama? She’s up against Julianne Moore (Still Alice), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), Reese Witherspoon (Wild) and Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything). Aniston is already a Golden Globe winner for her role as Rachel in “Friends.” 2) Salma Hayek Mexican actress Salma Hayek is expected to present at the 2015 Golden Globes.

It’s the perfect underdog story, and it involves a group of Mexican immigrants. Four undocumented high school students from Phoenix go on to win a national underwater robotics competition, beating students from some of the nation’s top colleges and universities. SEE ALSO: ‘La Vida Robot’ shows how four undocumented students beat the odds That happened more than a decade ago. And on Tuesday, a Hollywood film based on the students’ unbelievable story premiered in Tempe, Ariz., just a few miles away from Carl Hayden Community High School, where the story first began. The film is titled “Spare Parts” and is set to open in theaters Jan. 16. It was previously titled “La Vida Robot.” “It’s really hard to describe it,” Lorenzo Santillan, one of the four members of the 2004 Falcon Robotics Team, said when asked how he felt to see hundreds show up Tuesday to see the film. “It’s hard to put into words how I feel knowing that there are so many people in this theater who came to see our story.” Santillan was seated in the lower part of the theater and was joined by his parents. His mother, Laura Barrera, said she felt “very excited” to see the film with her son. The film tells the story of how Santillan—along with Oscar Vazquez, Luis Aranda and Cristian Arcega—were only high school students when they won first place in a national robotics competition held at Santa Barbara, Calif., in 2004. They beat students from some of the most prestigious colleges and universities, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Beyond the competition, the film shows some of the troubles the students faced because of their undocumented status. It also shows how poverty affected the lives of many of the students attending Carl Hayden Community High School at the time. SEE ALSO: Latinos get no respect on Vanity Fair’s Hollywood cover Comedian George Lopez stars in the film and is one of the producers. He was present at the “Spare Parts” premiere. He plays a combination of the two real-life teachers of the robotics team. Other leading actors in the film include Jamie Lee Curtis, Marisa Tomei and Carlos Pena Vega. When asked why he decided to play a serious role in this film, Lopez said he did it because he was captivated by the students’ story and felt that he “had to take a chance.” “This is a movie that will stand the test of time, and it will always be something that you’ll be able to show other people,” he added. “And when someone says that you can’t, you can say ‘si se puede.’” The film shows how the four students were only able to fundraise $800 to build their underwater robot, which they named “Stinky.” Meanwhile, their opponents fundraised thousands to build their robots. And while the other teams used top-notch tools and materials to build their underwater robots, the Falcon Robotics Team used everyday materials to build theirs. For example, they used PVC pipes that they bought at Home Depot and assembled them using rubber glue. But it wasn’t until months after the competition that their story went public thanks to journalist Joshua Davis. Davis, who attended Tuesday’s “Spare Parts” premiere, recalled the moment he first read an “unusual” email depicting how the Falcon Robotics Team won the national competition. He said there was something about the story that peaked his curiosity, so he flew to Phoenix to interview the team. Several months later, in April 2005, he published an article on Wired magazine about the team’s incredible story. “This is actually a nice book end for that experience that began exactly 10 years ago,” Davis said, referring to Tuesday’s premiere of “Spare Parts.” Fredi Lajvardi, one of the two robotics team teachers, said he still finds it hard to believe the film is finally complete, after 10 years in the making. “It’s like a dream come true,” Lajvardi said. “For a while there it looked like it wasn’t going to be made, and I was thinking I’m going to have to buy a video camera and make the movie myself. But I didn’t have to do that, which is great.”

The post Hollywood goes to Arizona for the ‘Spare Parts’ premiere appeared first on Voxxi.

The action-packed soon-to-be trilogy “Taken” has just gotten better with the movie debut of Latinos secret weapon la chancla (the flip-flop). It may sound crazy and silly, but something tells us that Liam Neeson’s character Bryan Mills –only our favorite ex-government operative in the world–, has a new and powerful weapon in “Taken 3.” SEE ALSO: Hispanic parents be like: ‘Vaporub to the rescue!’ I mean, can you imagine your abuelita’s chancla in the hands of Liam Neeson? If you’re a die-hard fan of “Taken” and its sequel, then you know that those flying flip-flops will be a serious threat. Chanclas are everywhere, killing people and bursting out of guns as bullets, in a 50-second clip promoting the upcoming production directed by Oliver Megaton. Though we highly doubt that the “secret weapon” makes its feature in the flick, we can’t help but get a kick out of the humorous trailer. Can you picture Neeson delivering his now famous line with a twist? “I will look for you, I will find you, and then te voy a meter un chancletazo…” For the most part, Latinos are known for using the chancla as a tool of discipline. In “Taken 3,” Neeson returns as ex-covert operative Bryan Mills, whose long awaited reconciliation with his ex-wife is tragically cut short when she is brutally murdered. Consumed with rage, and framed for the crime, he goes on the run to evade the relentless pursuit of the CIA, FBI and the police. SEE ALSO: 13 Reasons the Latina mom is one of a kind For one last time, Mills must use his “particular set of skills,” to track down the real killers, exact his unique brand of justice, and protect the only thing that matters to him now – his daughter. But, since we don’t want to ruin the movie for you, “El Chancletazo” … err, we mean “Taken 3″ hits theaters January 9th.

The post ‘Taken 3′ features abuelita’s best weapon, the ‘chancla’ appeared first on Voxxi.
