Obesity can take years off an individual’s life, contributing to chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes and even Alzheimer’s. More than one-third of adults in the United States are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), but millions more are guilty of something now being considered even more deadly than excess pounds: physical inactivity. SEE ALSO: Benefits of exercising: How it affects every organ in your body According to new research from author Ulf Ekelund, a sport medicine professor who works in the Medical Research Council (MRC) Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge, a lack of adequate exercise is twice as deadly as obesity, regardless of an individual’s weight. Ekelund’s research followed more than 300,000 individuals over a 12-year period. Study participants were categorized based on physical activity, with individuals exercising less than 20 minutes a day considered inactive. Over the course of the study, researchers looked at possible links between inactivity and early death, concluding at the end of the research that early death and inactivity were related at all levels, though they were most evident among people of “normal” weight and among people who were considered inactive. Burning just 90-110 calories a day, what researchers say is the equivalent of a daily 20-minute brisk walk, was enough to move an individual from the inactive to the moderately inactive group and reduce their risk of early death by 16-30 percent. Ekelund told MNT, “Just a small amount of physical activity each day could have substantial health benefits for people who are physically inactive.” The professor indicated that, while 20 minutes could make a significant difference in a person’s health, the goal should be to do more than just 20 minutes because “physical activity has many proven health benefits and should be an important part of our daily life.” SEE ALSO: Is there such a thing as exercising too much? The experts weigh in Indeed, the benefits of physical activity are almost innumerable when broken down by disease; however, the CDC indicates there are 8 main reasons to stay physically active. According to the agency, physical activity: Controls weight. Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. Reduces the risk for type 2 diabetes and metabolic disease. Reduces the risk of certain cancers. Strengthens bones and muscles. Improves mental health and mood. Maintains the ability to perform daily functions as an older adult.

The post This is twice as deadly as obesity–and millions are guilty of it appeared first on Voxxi.

In a continued effort to promote a healthy and happy lifestyle, this article will teach you the perfect yoga sequence for those that do not have time to make it all the way to the yoga studio between work, school, kids, leisure time and whatever else life throws at you. You can still keep yourself flexible, calm yet energized and strong without forking over an expensive yoga studio fee. Yoga isn’t just a physical workout and it isn’t just stretching. There is a spiritual aspect but that is up to the individual yogi to explore in whatever way they feel most comfortable. As the sun rises, the world awakens to a new day, new possibilities. Sun salutations or Surya Namaskar are perfect in the morning when you first get out of bed. I used to hit the snooze button 4 or 5 times before finally forcing myself out of bed. But after a few days of greeting the sun with my own salutations, I hit the snooze button less, I went to work less zombified and I looked forward to my day the moment my eyes opened. SEE ALSO: Trying to reduce belly fat? Try this snack Sun Salutations consist of 12 fluid and rhythmic postures that awaken the body, focus the mind and enliven the breath. It may sound like a lot but after a little practice, it’ll feel like one long, fluid motion. The breath is a very important part of this sequence. The movement from one pose to the next is always done with either an inhale or exhale of the breath. You can control the pace of the sequence by altering the number of breaths in each pose. Step 1: Prayer pose Stand at the edge of your mat, keep your feet together and balance your weight equally on both feet. Expand your chest and relax your shoulders. As you breathe in, lift both arms up from the sides and as you exhale, bring your palms together in front of the chest in prayer position. Step 2: Mountain pose Breathing in, lift the arms up and back, keeping the biceps close to the ears. In this pose, you are trying to stretch the whole body up from the heels to the tips of the fingers. If you want to deepen this stretch, push the pelvis forward a little bit. Ensure you’re reaching up with your fingers rather than trying to bend backwards. Make sure you’re pushing your hips forward to give your back room to bend. Step 3: Standing forward bend Exhale while you slowly bend forward until your hands are in line with your feet, touching your head to your knees, if possible. Press your palms down, fingertips in line with toes (bend your knees if you have to), and touch the floor. Step 4: Lunge Move your right leg back behind your body in a wide lunge. As you inhale, keep your hands and feet on the ground, with your left foot between your hands, and raise your head. Step 5: Plank Bring your left foot together with your right foot. Step 6: Yoga Push-up Exhale as you lower your body, keeping your elbows by your side. Keep your back parallel to the floor and do not lower lower than 90 degrees at your elbows. Step 7: Upward facing dog As you inhale, lower your pelvis to the ground and raise your head and bend backward as far as possible, while straightening your arms. Step 8: Downward facing dog Putting your hand on the ground and keeping your arms straight, raise your hips and align your head with your arms. Exhale. SEE ALSO: A typical vegan’s daily menu Step 9: Lunge Slowly inhale and bend your left leg to take a wide forward step. Keeping your hands firmly on the ground, place your left foot between your hands and lift your head up. Step 10: Standing forward bend Keeping your hands in place, bring both feet together. Straighten your legs but keep your waist bent and upper body lowered. Touch your head to your knees, if possible. Exhale. Step 11: Mountain pose Slowly rise, straightening your back into a standing pose. Bend backward, stretching your arms above your head as you inhale. Step 12: Prayer pose Return to position number 1. Exhale. Now you’re ready to begin your day!

The post Yoga for beginners: sun salutations appeared first on Voxxi.

The hidden risk of handstand pushups

A handstand is difficult to master, let alone a handstand pushup. Not only are there great demands on the body from a physical standpoint, mental prowess is needed as well. In order to perform this feat of fitness correctly, and individual must have strength, coordination and mental confidence to turn the body upside down and rely primarily on the upper body for support. But no matter how well-conditioned or well-practiced and individual may be at the handstand pushup, there is a risk involved, and it has nothing to do with broken bones or falling injuries. SEE ALSO: Should I be worried about eye floaters? A case study was just released from experts at Worthing Hospital in West Sussex, England, regarding a 32-year-old man who suffered a rare injury while doing handstand pushups. Six hours after a workout including the upside-down maneuver, the patient noticed he was losing the vision in his left eye. When he presented at the hospital, the patient was examined by physicians and found to have hemorrhaging throughout the eye, likely caused by a buildup of pressure related to his handstand pushups. “It’s like pulling a shade down over retina,” Dr. Barrett Katz, a neuro-ophthalmologist, who was not involved in the man’s case, told Live Science. “It’s a recognized type of retinal problem we see on occasion in ophthalmology.” Though the man’s vision returned on its own as the eye healed, experts caution that more vision issues may pop up as intense workouts become more popular. “With ‘boot-camp’ style training sessions becoming ever-more popular,” this condition is something doctors should consider in people who report a sudden loss of their vision following intense physical exertion,” wrote doctors in the case report. Vision loss and more serious visual injuries like retina detachment have also been reported in yoga practitioners who employ inversion positions often in their workouts. Dr. Carolina Valdivia explained to AZ Central the pressure on the eye doubles when a person goes inverted, and that pressure increases further when the body starts performing a strenuous activity like a pushup. Even body builders who don’t go inverted sometimes suffer vision damage from the strain of heavy lifting. People with existing eye conditions like glaucoma risk irreversible blindness when they decide to do a handstand pushup. SEE ALSO: 3 ways to improve vision naturally Because handstand pushups work the shoulders and the triceps, experts agree there are plenty of other, safer exercises to work these areas of the body. Military presses, lateral raises and triceps kickbacks are all reasonable options that won’t carry as much risk to a person’s vision.

The post The hidden risk of handstand pushups appeared first on Voxxi.
