I dont know about you but I was disappointed by the quality of the Super Bowl XLIX commercials. As a non-football fan, I still look forward to the Super Bowl all year thanks to the scrumptious food and hilarious commercials. SEE ALSO: The Internet targets Katy Perrys Super Bowl halftime show I wasnt let down by the food, but Super Bowl commercials are supposed to be funny and many advertisements were missing that usual spot of hilarity we apparently have been taking for granted. Insurance giant Nationwide went for the opposite end of the spectrum and created a scary, depressing commercial geared only towards putting more worries into parents minds about household accidents. But lets try to forget about the negative here and instead focus on the rare gems of humor sporadically scattered throughout the game between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. And at least there wasnt anything horribly sexist or inappropriate. Super Bowl commercials try fixing their image The NFLs image has suffered since its players have been involved in domestic abuse scandals; so they felt safer featuring ads with babies and puppies rather than bikini-clad babes. Overall, they succeeded in creating a welcoming message for families, from Katy Perrys dancing sharks and beach balls to a cute puppy being saved by mystical horses. 1. Budweiser ad Budweiser takes the cake for the cutest puppy commercial. Ive watched it maybe a dozen times and still cant help an “aww” escaping me at the end when a little puppy covered in mud is running down a path leading a giant group of horses (his best friends) that seem to have arisen from a fairy tale. It was strangely reminiscent of Homeward Bound and was set to a slowed down version of the Proclaimers‘ “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” so it was certainly one that tugged at our heartstrings. 2. Esurance Esurance seemed to be on a celebrity rampage because their two commercials included Lindsay Lohan and Walter White. Lohans commercial took a stab at her DUI charge, while at the same teaching children to never climb in cars with stranger. Whites commercial casted him as a substitute pharmacist. “You’re not Greg,” a suspicious customer asks. “We both have a lot of experience with drugs,” White retorts. “Excuse me, pharmaceuticals.” 3. T-Mobile T-Mobile featured a commercial with Sarah Silverman and Chelsea Handler talking to each other on the phone and bragging about how they can call from anywhere in their mansions using Wi-Fi calling including a underground delivery room where Silverman informs a mother sorry its a boy, a hydroponic kale garden and a subterranean petting zoo. 4. BMW The new BMW looks pretty nice and the commercial only did it justice. Former “Today” show hosts Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel let BMW play a hilarious and embarrassing footage from real Today show footage from 1994 where Couric and Gumbel talk about the mysterious Internet and try to work their heads around the @ symbol and email. “Do you write to it like mail?” Gumbel asks, while Couric suggests that @ is short for “around or about.” 5. Snickers Snickers contributed to the lineup with yet another youre not yourself when youre hungry commercial. While one would think that idea is a bit overplayed, they managed to bring some wit into it by setting it in the world of The Brady Bunch, casting Danny Trejo as the hungry version of Marsha Brady while Steve Buscemi was the upset Jan Brady, who exclaimed the classic “Marsha! Katy Perry was the talk of the 2015 Super Bowl game after a nearly 15-minute long spectacle Sunday night where the New England Patriots were declared champions. Whether you loved or hated her colorful performance, people on the Internet were quick to react. Perry followed her opening song with “Dark Horse,” where she danced with nifty-looking robots. Shortly after, she made her way to a stage, where iconic rocker Lenny Kravitz was waiting for her to sing “I Kissed a Girl.” The pop star impressed the crowd when she continued her performance with singing and dancing sharks, beach balls and palm trees. In them midst of the giddy stage, she performed “Teenage Dream” and “California Gurls.” But the real hype of the halftime show was when Missy Elliott took the reigns, with her song “Get Ur Freak On.” Clearly, the ’90s rapper stole the spotlight, singing her other classics “Work It” and “Lose Control.” The Associated Press said Perry joined Elliott, attempting to dance beside her but coming off like a student lost in choreography class. A contact familiar with the plans for Sunday’s halftime show told The Associated Press on Thursday that Grammy winner Missy Elliott is going to be gracing the stage with her presence, alongside Perry’s performance. It’s supposed to be a surprise but that is a hopeless wish in the days of the Internet. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because Elliott’s participation had not been announced by the NFL. During a news conference Thursday, Katy Perry herself hinted at Elliott’s involvement in the Super Bowl act, which also will feature Lenny Kravitz. Perry and Elliott have worked together before in 2011 when Elliott was featured on a remix of Perry’s song “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”. Perry said the halftime show will include an “old school” female singer but did not say who that would be. “When you hear the first ring of the chord,” Perry promised, “I think jaws will drop and faces will melt.” Elliott is a multiplatinum rapper, singer and producer whose Grammy Awards from the early 2000s include Best Rap Solo Performance for “Get Ur Freak On,” and Best Female Rap Solo Performance for “Work It” and “Scream a.k.a. Itchin’.” Other Super Bowl halftime shows have included unannounced performances, including by singer Usher and former Guns ‘N Roses guitarist Slash in 2011. GoDaddy announced Tuesday that it would not air an ad slated to run during the Super Bowl after an early preview on the Today Show spawned a wave of criticism on social media. The Internet domain registrar, known for its zany Super Bowl ads, never fails to deliver water cooler fodder the Monday after the big game. But this time they may have gone too far, informs Danielle Abreu for NBC News. The adorable dog endures an arduous journey home to reunite with his owners, who are thrilled to see their lost puppy. “Look! It’s Buddy! I’m so glad you made it home,” says a woman as he jumps into her arms and licks her face, “because I just sold you on this website I built with GoDaddy.” The backlash was immediate. Animal lovers, activists, and rescue orgnizations like SPCA and The Human Society blasted the ad on Twitter and Facebook, accusing GoDaddy of condoning the online sale of puppies which are often connected to puppy mills. But there are so many ways to make easy substitutions in order to make sure the food youre bringing to a party or serving at your own party is both healthy and delicious. Here are a few favorites. SEE ALSO: One key step to successfully transform your body Zucchini fries French fries are delicious but those potatoes and fatty oils can add up to an uncomfortable, bloated belly. Zucchini is a perfect substitute for that starchy potato and they arent too expensive in the grocery store. It takes about ten or fifteen minutes to prep everything and then 20 minutes in the oven and voila, French fries made of green vegetables! Ingredients: Cooking spray ½ cup bread crumbs ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese 2 eggs, beaten 3 zucchinis- ends trimmed, halved and cut into 1/2inch strips Directions: Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with cooking spray. Stir bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese together in a shallow bowl. Whisk eggs in a separate shallow bowl. Working in batches, dip zucchini strips into egg mixture, shake to remove any excess, and roll strips in bread crumb mixture to coat. Transfer coated zucchini strips to the prepared baking sheet. Bake zucchini fries in the preheated oven, turning once, until golden and crisp, 20 to 24 minutes. Spinach artichoke dip You cant have a Super Bowl without dips! The traditional recipe of spinach artichoke dip used often in restaurants is loaded with full-fat mayo, sour cream and cream cheese even though the name often suggests healthy. Serve with whole wheat pita chips or raw veggies and youll feel good about munching out on this dish. Ingredients: 2 (14 oz) cans artichoke hearts, drained and coarsely chopped 1 (10 oz) package frozen spinach, thawed, drained and squeezed dry 1 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1 cup low-fat Greek yogurt 1 (8 oz) block 1/3-less-fat cream cheese, softened and cut in 1/2″ cubes 1 (8 oz) block fat-free cream cheese, softened and cut in 1/2″ cubes 4 cloves garlic, minced (1 tablespoon) 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 red bell pepper, diced (optional garnish) Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Set aside half of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. In a large bowl, stir together all the remaining ingredients except for the red bell pepper. Spoon the mixture into a greased or sprayed 1-1/2 to 2 quart baking dish. Sprinkle top with remaining cheeses. Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes or until you notice its starting to get bubbly and golden. SEE ALSO: Simple trick to decrease your waist line Grilled buffalo wings Wings are a Super Bowl favorite but a normal tubful of takeout chicken weighs in at around 1,000 calories. This recipe has only 200 per serving. Swap out wings for chicken tenders; they have more protein and fewer calories. Serve some sliced up carrots and celery on the side, both of which are excellent for the spinach artichoke dip mentioned above. Ingredients: 1 pound of chicken tenders salt ground black pepper 1/3 cup prepared Buffalo wing sauce 4 ribs celery, cut into sticks 4 carrots, cut into sticks 2 cucumbers cut into spears 1/3 cup fat-free ranch dressing Directions: Season the chicken tenders to taste with salt and pepper. Coat a ridged grill pan with olive oil spray and heat over medium-high heat, or heat an electric countertop griller. Grill the chicken, turning once, about 4 minutes, or until browned and no longer pink in the thickest part. Cut into bite-sized pieces. Transfer to a bowl and toss with the Buffalo sauce. Place the chicken on a platter with the celery, carrots, cucumbers, and the ranch dressing for dipping. Serve with a good supply of wooden picks.

Who doesnt love puppies? It seems impossible that anyone is immune to their adorable faces and loveable antics. Usually Super Bowl ads are filled with scantily-clad babes in bikinis, but this shift from hot to adorable may be in response to NFLs recent shift of image. This doesnt mean the Super Bowl will have any less viewers, or that Super Bowl advertisers are not trying to reach these audiences, but rather that advertisers must send out a different message. A spot on the lineup for Super Bowl advertisements is at a record $4.5 million per spot, up from $4 million last year. 95 percent of the spots have already been sold, said Seth Winter, executive vice president of sales and marketing for NBC Sports Group and NBCUniversal News Group, during a press call. “Most advertisers feel [the NFL] is correcting what they see as significant issues,” said Winter. Appetite for the world’s biggest television stage is strong enough that 15 new advertisers have signed up. Many of those that do run ads will be putting distance between themselves and stereotypical macho images, though. Dove promises to challenge the definition of what it means to be a man today. Sultry women are synonymous with Super Bowl car ads, but Toyota is planning to change it up a bit by featuring paralympic athlete Amy Purdy, a double below knee amputee. Budweiser’s “Puppy Love” ad last year won USA Today’s Super Bowl Ad Meter. It was also the most shared ad online, according to analysis by Unruly, a social video technology company. It seems advertisers are trying to make us cry this year. Tears might seem an odd objective to shoot for between the images of male bodily combat on the gridiron, but for marketers, moving and heartwarming is a smart play.

Danny Trejo has been the bad guy in Hollywood for over two decades, but in his latest role for a Super Bowl ad, the actor of Mexican descent goes from villain to vain. They want you to play Marcia Brady,'” Trejo told VOXXI about the first time he got the news. “For 20 years, I’ve been the bad guy in Hollywood. I’ve been the meanest guy in Hollywood. I’ve been the guy that when I walk in the room, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone all stand up, and they expect me to do Marcia Brady?” he laughed. Trejo admitted that the idea of playing a vain and pretty TV character was “hilarious.” Eventually he gave in, stating that he’s seen previous commercials starring Joe Pesci and Betty White. “I said ‘yes, yes, yes’ because I love Snickers too. The big day is almost upon us. Football fans, small and large, look forward to the Super Bowl all year, both for its infectious sports mania and delicious game-day snacks. Here are a few favorites that are bound to get eaten up faster than you can say touchdown! SEE ALSO: Super Bowl: Americans will eat chicken wings, 1.23 billion of them Baked Buffalo Chicken Dip Buffalo wings are a fan favorite but I cant say Im too fond of the bones that we must navigate through in order to experience the deliciousness. Thats why a buffalo chicken dip is perfect! All the flavor of the buffalo sauce without the annoyance of ripping meat off like a lion ripping into a gazelle. Not the most attractive look Ill tell you. Serve celery, carrot and other raw veggies on the side or tortilla or pita chips. Ingredients: 3 cupsdiced cooked rotisserie chicken 2 (8 ounce) packagescream cheese, softened 3/4 cuphot pepper sauce (such as Frank’s RedHot®) 1/2 cupshredded pepper Jack cheese 1/2 cupblue cheese dressing 1/2 cupcrumbled blue cheese 1/2 teaspoonseafood seasoning (such as Old Bay®) 1 pinchcayenne pepper, or to taste 2 tablespoonsshredded pepper Jack cheese 1 pinchcayenne pepper, for garnish Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Combine chicken, cream cheese, hot pepper sauce, 1/2 cup pepper Jack cheese, blue cheese dressing, crumbled blue cheese, seafood seasoning, and cayenne pepper in a large bowl. Transfer the chicken mixture to a 9-inch round baking dish and sprinkle with 2 tablespoons pepper Jack cheese. Bake until lightly browned, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from oven and garnish with cayenne pepper. The perfect plate of nachos When it comes to nachos (or any food really) I like to think the more flavors, the better. Nachos, or at least the good kind, are known for being so laden down with tasty ingredients that you almost need a fork for them. Dont be the loser who bumps cheese on chips and expects substantial nachos. Ingredients: 1 lb lean ground beef 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1 -2 tablespoon fresh minced garlic 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped (or to taste) 1 small green bell pepper, seeded and chopped 2 -3 tablespoons chili powder(or 1 package mild or spicy taco seasoning mix) 2 cups refried beans 16 ounce jar salsa (mild or spicy) 1 1/2 cups grated cheddar cheese Salt and pepper tortilla chips Toppings: 1 cup sour cream 3-4 green onions, chopped 2 large tomatoes, finely chopped Sliced black olives Sliced avocado, dressed with lemon juice Directions: In a large skillet, cook the ground beef with onions, garlic, jalapeno peppers, green bell pepper and chili powder. Cook and stir until the meat is no longer pink. Make sure to drain all the fat well and continue to cook until the meat is well browned. Add in refried beans, salsa then cook and stir until heated through. Add in 3/4 cup grated cheddar cheese and stir until melted. Place the tortilla chips on a large serving platter. Top with ground beef mixture, then sprinkle the top of the still-hot ground beef mixture with about 1-1/2 cups grated cheddar cheese. Top with sour cream, green onions, tomatoes, avocado and black olives. Serve hot. Baked bacon jalapeno wraps Did someone say bacon?! Add a little green to that otherwise greasy food and youll have an addictive snack that is both easy and cheap since it requires very few ingredients. It’s perfect for game day entertaining and can be made in the oven or on the grill. Make sure you soak the toothpicks or bamboo skewers you use in water first so that they dont catch on fire or burn. Ingredients: 12 fresh jalapeno peppers, halved lengthwise and seeded 2 (8 ounce) package cream cheese Cajun seasoning 24 slices bacon Toothpicks Directions: Preheat an outdoor grill for high heat. Add Cajun seasoning to cream cheese and spread cream cheese to fill jalapeno halves. Wrap with bacon. Secure with a toothpick. Place on the grill, and cook until bacon is crispy.
