Samsung Galaxy S II Coming To United States This Fall

Samsung has announced that its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S II, will be available in the United States this fall.

Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile will get the 4G-capable devices “soon,” according to a press release Samsung issued on Tuesday evening, though Sprint said in a press release of its own that it will be the first to offer the Galaxy S II on September 16.

Sprint will sell the device under the name “Epic 4G Touch” for $199.99 with a two-year contract.

“T-Mobile said it will have a version in the fall, while Samsung says AT&T will also have a version this fall,” writes AllThingsD’s Ina Fried.

Powered by Google’s Android Gingerbread platform, the Galaxy S II features a dual-core processor, 16GB of storage, a microSD slot, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, a six-axis gyroscope and accelerometer, as well as a Super AMOLED touchscreen, among other features.

Noting key differences in each carrier-specific device, The Next Web writes the following:

The AT&T version of the Galaxy S II uses a 4.3-inch version of the display instead of the 4.52-inch and AT&T claims that it is the thinnest of the three models at 8.89mm versus Sprint’s 9.65mm. […] [Sprint’s Epic 4G Touch] will support Sprint’s 4G WiMAX network. The T-Mobile and AT&T devices are simply called the Galaxy S II and both support HSPA+ or ‘3.5G’.

Gizmodo’s first impressions of the device are strong: “It is the thinnest 4G smartphone on any of the three networks. Its processor is capable of recording 1080p at the highest bitrate of any smartphone on the market.”

PCWorld reviewed the European version of the Samsung Galaxy S II back in May, calling it “stunning and speedy.” In April, Engadget called the device “the best Android smartphone yet.”

“The unveiling of the Galaxy S II is a landmark achievement for Samsung, our carrier customers and consumers,” Samsung Mobile President Dale Sohn said on Tuesday in the company’s official press release. “Five million Galaxy S II smartphones have been sold around the world and that number increases every day. We believe the cutting-edge design, features and user experience of this innovative device will share the same level of success in the U.S.”
