Sony is releasing the Walkman on steroids

The Sony Walkman line is getting its first major product in a long time. The Japanese technology company debuted the Walkman ZX2 at the CES convention in Las Vegas on Tuesday. The ZX2 is designed for the audiophile. “Inside the player’s aluminum alloy frame, there’s an S-Master HX digital amp to keep things sounding clear, and DSEE HX tech that upscales those regular ol’ tunes (like those being streamed) for better sound quality. In terms of playback, the ZX2 handles media up to 192kHz/24-bit and MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC, AIFF, WAV and ALAC including DSD files. There’s 128GB of internal memory that’s sure to fill up, but a microSD slot provides extra space. It’ll connect to WiFi for streaming and downloads, and the battery is said to last 60 hours on a charge,” reported engadget. Sony’s new Walkman will no longer compress audio files, which is how they can achieve a greater sound quality. “Powerful DSEE HX processing recreates crucial high-frequency musical information that’s lost in compressed sound files. CD and MP3 sources are upscaled, expanding sampling frequency and bit-depth beyond their original values to near Hi-Res quality (corresponding to 192 kHz/24-bit audio). With immense amounts of musical detail to enjoy, you’ll feel as if you’re really there in the studio or concert hall,” stated Sony. In order for that extra detail in the music, the new Walkman will, in most cases, hold less songs than your current smartphone.
