Cheese recalled from Hispanic grocery stores

Another cheese primarily sold to Hispanic consumers is being recalled by its maker, Queseria Bendita LLC of Yakima, Washington. According to a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) press release, Cotija fresh soft cheese products and sour cream have been recalled due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Listeria monocytogenes are bacteria responsible for the food-borne illness listeria, a potentially fatal infection for the very young, very old, pregnant women, or those with impaired immune systems. Since the outbreak made media headlines, one person has died and two have been hospitalized.

Consumers should be on the lookout for Panela, Queso Fresco, Requeson, Cotija fresh soft cheese products and sour cream distributed to Hispanic grocery stores in Washington and Oregon with the best by dates up to 4/16/2015. Some contaminated products have also been traced back to purchases directly from the company’s on-site store in Yakima, Washington.

The Mayo Clinic indicates healthy people rarely die from listeria infection, often presenting with fever, muscle aches, vomiting, and diarrhea. Unlike many other food-borne illnesses, listeria infection can take months to present symptoms, and may eventually spread to the nervous system to cause headaches, convulsions and lack of mental clarity, among other issues.

Though consumers should purchase Queseria Bendita LLC products with caution, the specific items being recalled are:

This is not the first listeria food recall for 2015. Earlier this month, Granny Smith Gala apples were recalled nationwide after listeria bacteria were confirmed in samples from a California processing plant. Though most common in cheese, deli meats and hot dogs?foods that undergo much processing?listeria bacteria can be present in soil and water, making it possible for any food source to become contaminated.
