Production begins on ‘Call me Francesco,’ a film on Pope Francis

Latinos will soon be able to see two feature films on Pope Francis, one which has already begun shooting in Buenos Aires, called “Call me Francesco. The film that chronicles the life of Pope Francis, already shot its first scenes in the streets and buildings where the man once known as Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio started his mission in Argentina. It’s based on the book “Francisco, Pope of the People” by Evangelina Himitian. The Argentine actor Rodrigo de la Serna (Motorcycle Diaries) will play Father Jorge Bergoglio in his youth.  Chilean actor Sergio Hernandez is playing the now Pope Francis’s most recent years in Buenos Aires. The film is about the life of the first Latin American pope, from his youth in Argentina until his rise to St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The filming is set inn three countries and in locations such as Buenos Aires, Salta, Munich and Rome. “Call me Francesco” covers the life of the first Latin pope, from his ordination until his inaugural ceremony as Pope Francis. He was born in the neighborhood of Flores, Buenos Aires, in 1936. He was ordained a Jesuit priest at the age of 21, and had a prolific priestly career that helped him become anointed Archbishop of Buenos Aires and later cardinal. The film on Pope Francesco recounts the nearly 50 years of life and relationships of the young Jorge Bergoglio in Argentina, his passion for his soccer club, San Lorenzo de Almagro, his closeness to Peronism and the humble, yet firm, attitude towards government authorities in defense of the poor. The film is expected to include some bloody episodes showcasing the crimes of several members of the church during the last military dictatorship. The release date is expected in December of 2015, right on time for Pope Francisco’s birthday. ‘Francesco,’ the second film Meanwhile, the Spanish director Beda Docampo Feijoo is directing “Francesco,” based on the book “Francisco: Life and Revolution” by Elisabetta Pique. Argentine actor Darío Grandinetti will play Pope Francis. Note that Darío Grandinetti participated in the film “Wild Tales“ (Relatos Salvajes), recently nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. “Francesco” will be distributed by Disney in Spain and Latin America. Its release date is estimated to be in in mid-2015. An Italian-Argentine film on Pope Francis
