California hospital receives suspect Ebola patient

California health officials indicate a suspected Ebola case appeared in Sacramento county this week.

The patient was transferred to the University of California, Davis, Medical Center on Thursday after presenting at another local hospital for symptoms. The University Medical Center was designated by the California Department of Public Health as a priority hospital equipped to treat confirmed Ebola patients.

According to Reuters, the hospital issued a statement confirming the patient had symptoms consistent with Ebola infection, however no other information was made public. They haven’t confirmed if the patient traveled to a country currently facing the Ebola epidemic, but a hospital spokesperson told local TV station FOX40 that Ebola emergency medical teams are only made active if a patient has traveled to an endemic area.

Current reports indicate University of California, Davis, Medical Center remains open to the public and is treating patients like normal.

Thus far, 10 people in the United States have been treated for Ebola, and only two of those contracted Ebola from a source within the United States. The epidemic continues to ravage West Africa, where the World Health Organization indicates more than 22,000 cases have been reported, with 8,818 confirmed deaths. The rate of infection appears to have slowed down, however. For the first time since June 29, 2014, there have been fewer than 100 new confirmed cases reported in a week in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Symptoms of Ebola include high fever, severe muscle aches, chills, weakness, bleeding from eyes and other orifices, easy bruising, chest pain, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea, among others. Anyone who suspects they may have been in contact with an infected individual should seek medical treatment immediately and avoid contact with others.
