Brazilian model Caroline Trentini has been modeling since she was 15, so it’s no surprise the internationally-known beauty has picked up some skin care tips along the way.

For Trentini, who is used to Brazilian warmth, the cold of a fashion capital like New York City in the winter feels even more extreme than to regular residents.

“I’m not surviving! I’m Brazilian so this is so cold!” she told Yahoo Beauty in an interview.  “I made my husband and my baby come here and stay for a few days, because I can’t be away from my baby for too long, but we can’t even go outside. It’s way too cold!”

Traveling to regions much colder than her homeland has taught Caroline some important lessons on skin care, however. The model states drinking water is one of her mainstays during the winter and is something everyone should focus on when it comes to winter skin health.

“Even though it’s hard, I try to drink water,” she said. “We aren’t in the sun and it’s not warm so we forget to drink water. I think that is very important. I always moisturize, especially my hands… I do the basics in the morning. I wash my face and put a nice moisturizer on.”

Trentini is right on the money when she talks about water and winter skin care. According to the American Skin Association (ASA), anyone of any age can suffer from dry skin, also known as xerosis.

While there are a number of personal habits that can cause skin to dry out, the most common cause is low humidity in the air, and air is often driest in the winter. To complicate things further, the low moisture in the air plus frequent changes from cold to warm temperatures dries skin out even more.

“An important environmental factor is represented by the exposure to hot or cold weather with low humidity levels,” states the ASA. “Xerosis often worsens in the winter, when several factors contribute to skin dryness: low temperature and low humidity associated to very hot and drying heating, cause a decreased amounts of water in the stratum corneum (the outter-most layer of the skin).”

10 Tips to keep skin healthy during the winter

The easiest way to stay hydrated and keep skin healthy in winter is to drink plenty of water, but sometimes even that is not enough. Individuals who work outside or in extreme environments will likely need additional moisture from a product of their choice.

The ASA recommends the following winter hydration tips:

  • Choose short showers over baths. Long baths or showers, especially in hot water, increase the loss of natural oils from the skin and worsen skin dryness. The shower should be in warm rather than hot water. Apply a moisturizer after shower or hands washing.
  • Apply moisturizing creams, emollients or ointments moisturizers several times a day: they are fundamental in dry skin treatment because they reconstitute cutaneous hydro-lipidic film holding water in the skin. Cream moisturizers, when applied they disappear when rubbed into the skin because of they are more popular than other treatments. They protect damaged and sensitive skin and make skin softer and smoother. They preserve natural skin lipids and limit dehydration trapping and sealing water in the stratum corneum.
  • Choose a non-alcohol-based moisturizer.
  • Use a mild non-soap skin cleanser. Harsh soaps remove the oils from the surface of the skin and dry it out.
  • Avoid antibacterial soaps.
  • Place a humidifier in your home or add it to the central heating system to maintain the air moisturized during the winter and in dry weather.
  • Avoid rubbing or scratching the skin.
  • Wear gloves, hats, and scarves in the winter.
  • Avoid dehydration caused by drinking alcohol and by neglecting to replace fluids lost through sweating.
  • Avoid itchy clothing because it might get more itchy. Dry skin is especially sensitive to contact irritants and it may worsen itching and redness.

As for Caroline Trentini, she indicates there is one thing that will help a person to appear glowing no matter what: happiness. “It’s a cliche, but it really does come from inside,” she said.

“Now that I have a family, a child, I’m exhausted, I sleep very little everyday and people say ‘Oh my god, you look so fresh.’ And I think it’s because I’m happy. It comes from inside. It’s about being happy with your life and yourself.”

And a little extra water in winter certainly doesn’t hurt, either.
