Las Cafeteras sing to honor International Women’s Day

On International Women’s Day (and every day, as a matter of fact), we celebrate and recognize the many strides feminism has taken against sexism and women oppression.

Los Angeles-based musical activist group Las Cafeteras has dropped a fresh new remix and music video titled “Mujer Soy” (I am Woman) in honor of the commemorative day.

This project came to life as a special collaboration with Yukicito, a member of DJ Crew LA Junta Sound System who remixed the track into an upbeat dance single.

Prior to its new and hyped version, the jam was written and recorded by Las Cafeteras with traditional instruments to pay homage to the various experiences women face in their households, on the street, and in sweatshops around the world.

“This is a song calling out the injustices done to women, but also highlighting the POWER and resiliency women inherently possess,” affirms Denise Carlos, member of Las Cafeteras.

These daily struggles are captured in the music video, which tells the story of a day in the real life of Maryann Aguirre, a young and fierce woman of color from the Eastside of Los Angeles.

The video grasps Aguirre facing challenges at work, living as a single mother, and the pressure of being a leader in her community; however, she faces those obstacles with hope, resolve, patience and dignity.

“In a time when women are too often degraded in the club, we’re trying to reclaim the dance floor with this song to celebrate & uplift women,” stated Daniel French, member of Las Cafeteras.

Whether its creative artists, ingenious business women, brilliant tech-savvy bad asses or mothers of the year, important and successful women are showing the young girls around the globe that they will grow up in a different world.

A world free of prejudice where being a woman is something to be proud of, not apologize for.
