Supermodel Adriana Lima was blessed with Brazilian good looks, but the runway professional knows it takes more than just luck to maintain her physique. Lima says diet and exercise play a large role in how she looks, and for the 2014 bikini season she’s paired some cardio with the popular “caveman diet.”

Just what has the Victoria’s Secret Angel been up to? She’s been jumping rope, drinking coconut water and focusing on a Paleolithic diet.

“It’s been hard [to work out every day] because I’ve been traveling so much,” Lima told the NY Daily News. “When you travel, just carry a rope with you and then all you need is a space, anywhere, and you can jump for 10 minutes. Even if you do a little bit, you have great results no matter what.”

The supermodel has been training with Michael Olajide, a former middleweight boxing champ, for the past 10 years, and it is his influence that has passed on a love of jumping rope to Lima. WebMD indicates jumping rope is a great calorie burner, and you can burn more calories jumping rope 15-20 minutes than you do going for an 8-mile run.

“It’s certainly good for the heart,” Peter Schulman, MD, told WebMD. “It strengthens the upper and lower body and burns a lot of calories in a short time, but other considerations will determine if it’s appropriate for an individual. You’re putting direct stress on knees, ankles, and hips, but if done properly it’s a lower-impact activity than jogging.”

Jumping rope isn’t the only thing Adriana Lima says keeps her ready to walk the beaches in a bikini; the model loves coconut water and has been sticking to a low-carb Paleolithic diet. Under this diet regime, Lima focuses on eating lean meats and fish with smaller portions of fruits and vegetables. No processed foods are allowed on the diet, and since this diet is based on what “cavemen” used to eat,  Adriana Lima had to say goodbye to wheat and dairy, along with other grains and legumes (such as peanuts and beans).

Throughout it all, however, she makes sure to indulge her love of good cooking.

“I always like to eat healthy,” she said. “I’m a mom, I have two kids, so I have to set a great example. But I am also Brazilian so there’s a lot of Brazilian food involved too.”

The supermodel believes what you put into the body eventually show up on the outside of the body, and this is why it is important to eat well not only for health’s sake but for the sake of beauty, too.

“Everything that goes in to your body is going to show up on the outside. You’re going to see it in your skin and your hair and your nails. If you want your hair to grow faster, you can take flax seed oil or a flax seed pill. It’s great! It will make your hair super-shiny and it’s going to grow fast,” she said. “If you have dry hair, don’t wash every day,” she said. “And if you have very, very dry hair, wash once a week! The oils help your hair look better, but it also depends on activity. If you sweat a lot every day, of course you should wash more often or use dry shampoo.”
