For those of you who don’t know, if there is someone out there who doesn’t, a selfie is a self-portrait taken with a digital camera or smartphone. The selfie is then usually published on a social media platform.
Its sassy, its trendy and if you havent taken and posted at least one selfie, youre not keeping up with the times. In 2013 the Oxford Dictionary chose the word “selfie” as Word of the Year, and for good reason.

Apparently, selfies are not exactly a recent discovery or invention. They are also not a direct consequence of social networks or even cell phones. Selfies appear to be a resource that widely used in the early days of photography, circa mid-19th century.
Robert Cornelius – whose family had a local photographic studio in Philadelphia, USA – took the first self-portrait, in 1839.
The latest selfie trends have brought us derriere close-ups, cleavage snapshots and posts of glowing couples after making love. No matter what, its all about jumping on the selfie bandwagon.

How to take a good selfie
- Choose a well-lit area in which to take it.
- Remember you are the focus of the picture.
- Beware of photobombers! Scan your surroundings for them.
- Make sure the selfie portrays a personal update: a new hairstyle, an accessory
- Dont overpose. The best selfies have you being silly or smiling.
- Avoid no-nos as scanty clothes and overtly sexy poses.
- Dont publish 20 selfies a day!
- Experiment with different filters. Find an app on your phone that can add interesting features through the use of colors and filters.
