During her first pregnancy, Kate was admitted to the hospital for hyperemesis gravidarum for supportive care and pain management. Though the extent of the Duchess’s condition during her second pregnancy is not yet known, the fact she had to cancel travel plans suggests she is just as under-the-weather as before.

“When it became apparent that she was no well enough to join the Duke on a joint engagement in Oxford today and that the number of forthcoming engagements could be affected, the Duke and Duchess have taken the difficult decision to be fully open about the pregnancy,” a senior royal source told MailOnline.

Hyperemesis gravidarum affects more than 60,000 women annually, according to the American Pregnancy Association, and usually appears between 4-6 weeks of pregnancy, peaking between 9 and 13 weeks.

“Hyperemesis gravidarum is a condition characterized by severe nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and electrolyte disturbance,” states the Association. “Mild cases are treated with dietary changes, rest and antacids. More severe cases often require a stay in the hospital so that the mother can receive fluid and nutrition through an intravenous line (IV).”
