Music students can catch big break with scholarship competition

If you’re an aspiring musician or singer, than what are you waiting to achieve your dreams? It’s not unreachable, especially with a little push from the executives of Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI).

Music students have a chance of a lifetime thanks to the help of BMI Foundation, which has been making musical dreams come true since 2003.

The foundation presents its 12th annual peermusic Latin Scholarship competition, where one aspiring artist is granted a $5,0000 scholarship. The winner is awarded for best song or instrumental composition submission in any Latin genre.

Established by music publisher Ralph Peer II and funded by peermusic over a decade ago, the non-profit organization has nurtured promising musicians who have gone on to distinguish themselves in the fields of television, film, recorded music, and concert performance.

The judging panel comprises several prominent Latin music songwriters, publishers, and administrators. This year it counts with the help of bachata singer-songwriter Prince Royce.

“Music is a vital part of education, and for peermusic/BMI to give students the opportunity to win a cash prize for showcasing their talents, it’s truly an honor for me to have been chosen to be a part of it,” said Royce, the new face of the scholarship.

The BMI Foundation has announced the opening of the scholarship competition which will run until early next year.

For the first time this year, applications may be completed entirely online and submitted no later than February 13, 2015.

Eligibility requirements:

• Student enrolled at a college or university located in the United States or Puerto Rico
• Between the ages of 16 and 24 as of time of submission
• Must have never had any musical work commercially recorded or distributed
• Is not a prior peermusic Latin Scholarship winner (excluding Honorable Mentions)

Past winners of the peermusic Latin Scholarship include Mexican singer and actor Manélick de la Parra, Venezuelan composer Marco Godoy, Mexican pop singer Daniel Dayz, Dominican singer/songwriter Sammy Genao and Costa Rican singer/songwriter Daniela Blau, among others.
