Luciano Vietto is Argentina’s next soccer sensation

If you’re 21 years old and are clearly becoming the sensation of La Liga, you know you have a great future ahead of you. If, on top of that, you’re getting calls from Real Madrid, Liverpool and Inter Milan, then you know you’re about to hit the big leagues. That’s exactly where Luciano Vietto stands today, and he has quickly become the brightest shining star to come out of the Argentine footballing factory.

However, his story has not always been so impressive. At the tender age of 17, having already made his first team debut with Estudiantes de La Plata, Vietto was cut from the team, and it took a full year before Racing de Avellaneda would call him up to their ranks.

In Racing, Vietto became an instant sensation, as the 19-year-old was given the chance to make his debut by Diego Simeone, and then became a full-on starter under Zubeldia.

Vietto would go on to score 13 goals in 32 matches, which would make most of the top clubs in Europe turn their attention to the young striker. He also participated with the Under-20 albiceleste squad in the South American championship, scoring two goals in four games.

This tournament has been the springboard for many South American stars, like Roque Santacruz, Marcelo, Saviola, or Neymar and Casemiro, so it wasn’t strange that Luciano would get lots of eyes on him following his performance with the Argentine National team.

But then his next season would be a bit of a letdown. Arguably because of the overall state of convulsion the team club was in, with two coaches in five months, Luciano Vietto went through a 10-game drought, and was only able to finish the tournament with five goals to his name.

While this didn’t deter the European clubs from knocking on his door, it certainly did deter the top tier teams from pursuing the forward, who saw betting on him as quite a higher risk after such a shaky season.

Villarreal was finally the team that dove and signed the Argentine, and he really didn’t let the Yellow Submarine down.

He scored a brace in his second official game, and has been scoring at a rate of one goal every two matches, ever since. At the season’s midpoint, he has already scored over 10 goals with Villarreal, and some of those teams who passed on the opportunity to sign him directly from Racing are now back in the picture trying to seal a long term deal with the goalscorer.

Vietto has been dubbed by many the new Sergi Agüero, although his style and Racing de Avellaneda past would suggest a closer relation to “La Academia’s” idol Diego Milito, who return to the Argentine squad to fill Luciano’s void and helped the club to win the local championship six months later.

Regardless of who he is compared with, what’s clear is that Vietto’s days at Villarreal may be counted, even more so if he continues to perform as he’s done until now for the rest of the season.

He is the next big star from Argentina, and the European elite is already battling for him.
