Jim McDonnell for Sheriff

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department has recently been through a traumatic experience that involved violence in jail, officers being part of gangs and a sense of impunity that in fact allowed abuse of detainees and visitors. This department needs a drastic change. Ideally, someone like Jim McDonnell—who comes from another police organization while at the same time being extremely familiar with the police universe of Los Angeles—can accomplish it.

We believe that McDonnell, currently the only candidate who is not part of the Sheriff’s Department, would be a refreshing change to set a new tone in the department. At the same time, his biggest challenge will be precisely leading an organization that he was never a member of.

However, thanks to his lengthy experience as second in command in the Los Angeles Police Department and his years as chief of police for Long Beach, he has broad knowledge of how to manage police organizations.

For example, McDonnell has very clear ideas about how to efficiently manage the jail so that it becomes a specialization within the force instead of an unwanted step with a tendency toward a lack of discipline.

At the same time, McDonnell has highlighted the importance of communicating with the community, especially after the crisis of confidence caused by the poor behavior of some officers.

The next sheriff of Los Angeles will play a very important role in the building of the new jail and the strategy to treat inmates with mental illnesses. Because of all that, vote for Jim McDonnell for Los Angeles sheriff!
