Now that they are done snorting condoms, smoking alcohol, eating cinnamon, and lighting up coffee grounds, teenagers are moving on to a new habit known as “beezing.”

Just what is beezing? It’s when you take a peppermint oil or menthol-containing lip balm and smear it on the outside of your eyelids. According to those who have experimented with this new fad, the application of the lip balm alone provides a unique “high” feeling, though it is often used alongside other common highs such as those with alcohol or marijuana.

“The first week of Harvard. My first time I beezed, I beezed with a true beez veteran. My first beez experience was like a lot of people’s first beez experience: first I felt incredulous, then I felt silly, then I felt pain, then I felt ecstasy,” stated a college student in a Flyby interview. “Sometimes I’ll beez multiple times a day. Sometimes only a couple times a week. I got into a heavy wake-and-beez schedule when I discovered the enlivening effects of beez before class in the morning. Then I had to stop to take a tolerance break.”

The most common lip balm being used for beezing is Burt Bees, though any menthol-containing lip product will do for those looking to achieve the sensation. What’s more, when and where the lip balm is applied also seems to make a difference.

“Honestly, one of the best places to beez is the open air because the chilly windst will augment the effects of beez. Longtime beez-ers refer to this as the “beez and freeze.” But the great thing about beez is you can always beez on the go,” said the Flyby source.

Though it may seem like a harmless trend now, medical experts are cautioning that, like most inventive ways to get high, beezing carries with it a fair share of risks.

“Topicals are easily absorbed in the eyelid and so because of that, that’s what enhances the sensation,” Dr.Ryne Wood from Leet Eyecare told KFVS. “The main risk here is you are going to run into inflation. It could make the eye red. The eyelid could swell. If that’s the case, you would have to visit your local eye doctor and take care of that with some oral medications.”

Other experts warn that using lip balm that has been used on lips with herpes virus infections could transmit those infections to the eye and could eventually result in blindness.
