Your skin is your primary defense when it comes to maintaining internal health, but we often take it for granted and forget it needs nourishment, too. This is especially true in the summer heat; we are outside more because the weather is nice, but we don’t take extra steps to take care of our skin.

For some people with skin conditions like rosacea, the effects of the heat can be even more noticeable, and many people feel clueless when it comes to warm weather skin options.

Thankfully, Saludify has gathered some of the best tips to protect your skin from the heat. Check them out below:

Tips to protect your skin from the heat

  • Sunscreen: It should go without saying nowadays that sunscreen is your first step in protecting your skin from the heat. Sunburns not only increase your risk for skin cancer, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, but it prematurely ages skin and can result in wrinkles, texture issues and discoloration.
  • Cool your skin with rose water: If you value a refreshing swim when it’s too hot out, think of how your skin could benefit from an occasional cool-down during the day. Beauty expert Shahnaz Husain told the Hindustan Times rose water tonic kept in the refrigerator is the ideal way to cool your face when it’s hot out. Not only is the temperature refreshing, but rose water is a natural coolant even when kept at room temperature. It has been a popular beauty tradition in tropical countries for decades.
  • Find a good oil-free moisturizer: People with oily skin often neglect moisturizing because they feel it adds to the oiliness. This is an incorrect assumption; oily skin is oily because it lacks hydration and is producing oil to compensate. If you have sensitive skin, an oil-free moisturizer will do the trick. Or, if you’re faithful about the sunscreen, that can also act as a moisturizer.
  • Drink plenty of water: You know you should get plenty of water throughout the day, but to protect your skin form the heat you may need more than the standard 8 glasses. If it’s hot out and you are sweating, take the cue and drink more water.
  • Be aware of what you wear: You skin on your face isn’t the only skin that needs protecting. Make sure in the heat you wear light, loose clothing to prevent irritation from sweat and friction.
  • Exfoliate: The summer heat and sun can damage the outer layers of skin, leading to a dry, flaky feeling. Combat this by making sure you exfoliate a few times a week before you apply moisturizer.
  • Cool down your pillow: Ever wake up to a sweaty face and a damp pillow? This unpleasant situation can cause skin issues like acne and irritation. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends you ease your face at night by placing your pillow in a dry plastic bag and then putting it in the freezer for a few hours before you go to bed.
  • Keep your beauty products cool: If you wear makeup often or use skin products, keep them in the refrigerator so they help cool the skin when you use them.
  • See a professional: Sometimes the best way to protect your skin in the heat is to visit a professional. One of the most beneficial procedures is a chemical peel, which can help encourage the skin to regenerate and can decrease the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and sun damage.
