It may sound like an oxymoron, but the butt facial is a real thing.

People are willing to pay almost a hundred dollars and spend 30 minutes of their time to have this beauty treatment before they don their swimsuits, all in an effort to have the best hind-end possible for the warm months.

Often called the fanny facial, this spa treatment is driven by media images of celebrity backsides, and is further encouraged by the photo trend known as “buttfies,” or taking and posting pictures of your butt on social media. That being said, for some there are real benefits to the butt facial, including  relaxation, hydration, lifting, and acne treatment.

“I thought, if there’s one person who wants this, there’s probably others,” Molly Lamb, from Skin by Molly, told ABC News. “Some people are shy and nervous at first,” she explained. “But then they see they can relax in front of me. I also offer a foot rub to make it as enjoyable as possible.”

The butt facial may vary depending on the spa offering the service, but typically involves a purifying cleanser followed by macro exfoliation and then microdermabrasion. Some experts also offer extractions, herbal or clay masks and beauty serum treatments following the procedure.

Acne treatment is one of the primary reasons clients seek this service, and Dr. Mark Lees explained to Dermascope the butt facial is beneficial because the follicle structure on the skin of the back and buttocks is different from that of the face. Unlike acne on the face, acne on the butt can be difficult to extract, and if done incorrectly or treated at home bacteria tend to spread. What’s more, tight pants and damp bathing suits complicate butt complexion issues by creating an ideal breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria.

Dr. Lees’ idea of a butt facial includes:

  • Analyze the back end (this would be a good time to discuss waxing)
  • Cleanse area
  • Exfoliate
  • Steam
  • Extractions (if needed)
  • High Frequency for acne
  • Massage (upward movements)
  • Work with available equipment
  • Mask
  • Tone
  • Moisturize
  • Spray-on tan

Again, depending on the spa you go to for your butt facial, prices may vary or may increase if you wish to pay special attention to a medical condition like acne. Most salons offer the procedure for around $60, though more intensive operations can cost upwards of $100.

  • Avoid applying facial moisturizers as this can actually lead to inflammation under clothing.
  • Exfoliate your butt area 1-2 times weekly with a hydrogen peroxide scrub.
  • Use a germicidal cleanser on your butt after wearing a bathing suit or exercise clothing for extended periods of time.
  • Do not pick at acne on the butt as this will cause the bacteria to spread.
