Jennifer Lopez is a beauty icon, and when it comes to celebrity secrets, hers are some of the most sought-after when it comes to looking good at any age. Now, the Latina entertainer has opened up and shares some of that must-have advice with her fans.

“I’m a big believer in the basics,” Lopez told Allure. “I get my cleanser from my dermatologist. I need a great cleanser because I’ve had to wear a lot of makeup for so many years. I use a very mild makeup remover and a very basic sunscreen-moisturizer combo.”

But skin care isn’t just about taking care of your skin by keeping it clean and healthy. Jennifer says her makeup artist keeps after her about sun exposure and how it creates wrinkles. ” “The number one beauty tip Scott has taught me is to stay out of the sun,” she explains to Dailymakeover.com. “We’ve always worked with bronzers and self-tanners instead. It’s been over 10 years now that Scott has been telling me to stay out of the sun and it has saved my skin.”

For those who worry about the safety of self-tanners and bronzers, the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Dr. Melanie Palm states that, compared to exposing your sin to the sun for a tan, commercial products are much safer. These items contain the Food and Drug Administration-approved active ingredient dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a color additive that darkens the skin.

“There is no clear evidence that DHA is harmful to humans if applied topically and used as directed,” she explained. “Concern about DHA arose recently when a study correlated use of highly concentrated amounts of DHA with production of free radicals, molecules that form naturally in the body due to oxygen use and can damage cells. However, concentrations used in sunless tanning preparations are considered non-toxic and noncarcinogenic — I personally use these products and recommend them to my patients as a safe alternative to traditional tanning.”
